FIELD TECHNIQUES FOR VASECTOMY IN BLACK HOWLER MONKEYS ().

Three adult black howler monkeys () were vasectomized for the purpose of population control. Two different surgical approaches (inguinal and pelvic) were used to vasectomize the animals under general anesthesia. One monkey was vasectomized with a pelvic approach, and the other two monkeys were vasectomized with an inguinal approach.

Voice efficiency for different voice qualities combining experimentally derived sound signals and numerical modeling of the vocal tract.

Concerning voice efficiency considerations of different singing styles, from western classical singing to contemporary commercial music, only limited data is available to date. This single-subject study attempts to quantify the acoustic sound intensity within the human glottis depending on different vocal tract configurations and vocal fold vibration. Combining Finite-Element-Models derived from 3D-MRI data, audio recordings, and electroglottography (EGG) we analyzed vocal tract transfer functions, particle velocity and acoustic pressure at the glottis, and EGG-related quantities to evaluate voice efficiency at the glottal level and resonance characteristics of different voice qualities according to Estill Voice Training.

Frequency and spectrum of mutations across 94 cancer predisposition genes in African American women with invasive breast cancer.

African American women are at increased risk of being diagnosed at a young age and/or with triple negative breast cancer, both factors which are included in current guidelines for identifying women who may benefit from genetic testing. Commercial breast cancer predisposition genetic panels, based largely on data derived from women of European ancestry, may not capture the full spectrum of cancer predisposition genes associated with breast cancer in African American women. Between 2001 and 2018, 488 unselected African American women with invasive breast cancer enrolled in the Clinical Breast Care Project.

Should Genetic Testing for Cancer Predisposition Be Standard-of-Care for Women with Invasive Breast Cancer? The Murtha Cancer Center Experience.

Currently, genetic testing is offered only to women diagnosed with breast cancer who meet a defined set of criteria and is not included as standard-of-care treatment at the time of diagnosis. Thus, a significant number of women diagnosed with breast cancer may miss the opportunity for precision medical treatment and risk management. The effects of eligibility, timing, and uptake of genetic testing were evaluated in a cohort of women with invasive breast cancer diagnosed between 2001-2018.

Impaired Myofibroblast Dedifferentiation Contributes to Nonresolving Fibrosis in Aging.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a fatal age-associated disease with no cure. Although IPF is widely regarded as a disease of aging, the cellular mechanisms that contribute to this age-associated predilection remain elusive. In this study, we sought to evaluate the consequences of senescence on myofibroblast cell fate and fibrotic responses to lung injury in the context of aging.

Microbial Communities Associated With Passive Acidic Abandoned Coal Mine Remediation.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is an environmental issue that can be characterized by either acidic or circumneutral pH and high dissolved metal content in contaminated waters. It is estimated to affect roughly 3000 miles of waterways within the state of Pennsylvania, with half being acidic and half being circumneutral. To negate the harmful effects of AMD, ∼300 passive remediation systems have been constructed within the state of Pennsylvania.

Contribution of germline mutations in cancer predisposition genes to tumor etiology in young women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer.

Purpose: Although breast cancer in young women accounts for <10% of diagnoses annually, tumors in young patients exhibit more aggressive characteristics and higher mortality rates. Determination of the frequency of germline mutations in cancer predisposition genes is needed to improve the understanding of breast cancer etiology in young women.

Methods: All female patients enrolled in the Clinical Breast Cancer Project between 2001 and 2015 and diagnosed with invasive breast cancer before age 40 were included in this study.

The role of the histoblood ABO group in cancer.

Since the first link between blood type and cancer was described in 1953, numerous studies have sought to determine whether the histoblood ABO group is associated with tumorigenesis. In 2009, the first significant association between a SNP located within the ABO glycosyltransferase gene and increased risk of pancreatic cancer was reported. Here, we describe the history and possible functions of the histoblood ABO group and then provide evidence for a role of blood group antigens in the most common cancer types worldwide using both blood type and SNP data.

Tumour location within the breast: Does tumour site have prognostic ability?

Introduction: Tumour location within the breast varies with the highest frequency in the upper outer quadrant (UOQ) and lowest frequency in the lower inner quadrant (LIQ). Whether tumour location is prognostic is unclear. To determine whether tumour location is prognostic, associations between tumour site and clinicopathological characteristics were evaluated.

Sequence-based detection of mutations in cadherin 1 to determine the prevalence of germline mutations in patients with invasive lobular carcinoma of the breast.

Background: Loss of cadherin 1 (CDH1) expression, which is normally involved in cell adhesion and maintenance of tissue architecture, is a hallmark of invasive lobular carcinoma (ILCA). Because hereditary cancers may require different risk reduction, counseling and treatment options than sporadic cancer, it is critical to determine the prevalence of germline CDH1 mutations in patients with ILCA.

Methods: All patients with ILCA (n = 100) previously enrolled in the Clinical Breast Care Project were identified.

PSPHL and breast cancer in African American women: causative gene or population stratification?

Background: Phophoserine phosphatase-like (PSPHL) is expressed at significantly higher levels in breast tumors from African American women (AAW) compared to Caucasian women (CW). How overexpression of PSPHL contributes to outcome disparities is unclear, thus, molecular mechanisms driving expression differences between populations were evaluated.

Results: PCR was used to detect deletion of 30-Kb of chromosome 7p11 including the first three exons of PSPHL using genomic DNA from AAW (199 with invasive breast cancer, 360 controls) and CW (invasive breast cancer =589, 364 controls).

Wheel-gymnastic-related injuries and overuse syndromes of amateurs and professionals.

Purpose: Wheel gymnastics is a gymnastic discipline with a history of nearly 100 years. So far, there have been no epidemiological studies on injuries in wheel gymnastics.

Methods: The retrospective study of wheel gymnasts surveyed 151 "professionals" competing in the first national league and 352 "amateurs" by questionnaire.

TGF-β directs trafficking of the epithelial sodium channel ENaC which has implications for ion and fluid transport in acute lung injury.

TGF-β is a pathogenic factor in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a condition characterized by alveolar edema. A unique TGF-β pathway is described, which rapidly promoted internalization of the αβγ epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) complex from the alveolar epithelial cell surface, leading to persistence of pulmonary edema. TGF-β applied to the alveolar airspaces of live rabbits or isolated rabbit lungs blocked sodium transport and caused fluid retention, which--together with patch-clamp and flow cytometry studies--identified ENaC as the target of TGF-β.

Water quality and management of private drinking water wells in Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania has over three million rural residents using private water wells for drinking water supplies but is one of the few states that lack statewide water well construction or management standards. The study described in this article aimed to determine the prevalence and causes of common health-based pollutants in water wells and evaluate the need for regulatory management along with voluntary educational programs. Water samples were collected throughout Pennsylvania by Master Well Owner Network volunteers trained by Penn State Extension.

Evaluation of BRCA1 mutations in an unselected patient population with triple-negative breast cancer.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is characterized by aggressive behavior and poor prognosis. While >50 % of patients with inherited BRCA1 mutations have TNBC, the prevalence of BRCA1 mutations in patients with TNBC remains unclear. Deciphering the relationship between BRCA1 and TNBC is critical to understanding the etiology of TNBC, leading to improved patient counseling and treatment.

Genomic (in)stability of the breast tumor microenvironment.

The breast tumor microenvironment plays an active role in tumorigenesis. Molecular alterations have been identified in tumor-associated stroma; however, there is considerable debate as to whether the stroma is characterized by genomic instability or whether detection of chromosomal alterations reflects technological artifact rather than the true genomic content of the tumor microenvironment. Thus, breast stroma specimens from 112 women undergoing reductive mammoplasty (n = 7), prophylactic mastectomy (n = 6), or mastectomy for a breast disease (n = 99) were frozen in optimal cutting temperature medium.

Megalin mediates transepithelial albumin clearance from the alveolar space of intact rabbit lungs.

The alveolo-capillary barrier is effectively impermeable to large solutes such as proteins. A hallmark of acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome is the accumulation of protein-rich oedema fluid in the distal airspaces. Excess protein must be cleared from the alveolar space for recovery; however, the mechanisms of protein clearance remain incompletely understood.

Relationships between the ABO blood group SNP rs505922 and breast cancer phenotypes: a genotype-phenotype correlation study.

Background: To date, evaluation of the association of the ABO blood group and breast cancer has yielded mixed results. SNP rs505922, located within the first intron of the ABO gene, has been associated with the adenocarcinoma subtype of pancreatic cancer. To evaluate the association between genetic variation in the ABO blood group and risk of breast cancer, rs505922 was genotyped in 629 Caucasian women with invasive breast cancer, representing a variety of clinical and pathological tumor types.

Sr isotope measurements in beef-analytical challenge and first results.

The strontium isotope ratio ((87)Sr/(86)Sr) in beef, derived from 206 European cattle, has been measured. These cattle were located in 12 different European regions within France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Spain and the UK. As animal protein is known to be a difficult material on which to conduct Sr isotope analysis, several investigations were undertaken to develop and improve the sample preparation procedure.

[Fracture of the diaphyseal radius during Cyr wheel practice - an uncommon injury of wheel gymnastics].

The cyr wheel is a modified gymnastic wheel with only one ring that can lead to extreme forces on the gymnast. We report on a distal radius shaft fracture (AO 22 A 2.1) and a fracture of the styloid process of the ulna that occurred after holding on to a slipping Cyr wheel and exposition to high pressure on the lower arm.

[The "wheel gymnast's elbow" - first description of a common overuse syndrome].

Background: Overuse syndromes of the elbow due to wheel gymnastics are unknown in medical literature. This study describes a common overuse syndrome of the elbow in wheel gymnastics.

Methods: We conducted internet research and interviewed 260 wheel gymnasts, who trained the "hip roll" element.

Hospital treatment - Is it affordable? A structured cost analysis of vaginal deliveries and planned caesarean sections.

Introduction: The analysis of cost effectiveness in hospitals is as difficult as treating the patients properly. We are yet not able to answer the simple question of what costs are caused by a certain diagnosis and its treatment during an average hospital stay.

Methods: To answer some issues of the global problem of cost effectiveness during hospitalisation, we analysed the costs and the cost structure of a normal obstetrical hospital stay during an uncomplicated vaginal delivery and a planned caesarean section.

Genomic instability in the breast microenvironment? A critical evaluation of the evidence.

Tumor-associated stroma plays an active role in breast pathogenesis, with alterations in cell signaling, proliferation and angiogenesis contributing to successful tumorigenesis. Although epigenetic modifications to DNA, as well as changes in RNA and protein expression have been identified in tumor-associated stroma, there is considerable debate regarding the presence of chromosomal alterations, detected as loss of heterozygosity/allelic imbalance events in histologically normal stromal cells adjacent to the breast carcinomas. Previous studies have detected loss of heterozygosity/allelic imbalance at varying distances from the tumor margin, and patterns of chromosomal change have been linked to tumor grade and lymph node status.
