, a snail distributed over a large part of Argentina, has generated negative effects on the agribusiness. We accordingly conducted a seasonal sampling during 2018-2019 in order to characterize the gametic cycle and establish the size of this gastropod at gonadal maturity. Three reproductive stages were identified: the mature in autumn; the spawn, which begins in winter but occurs mainly in the spring, followed by the post-spawn in summer, where an absence of gonadal rest was evidenced.

High-energy freshwater environments such as rapids and waterfalls in the Upper-Paraná Atlantic Forest are home to highly endemic minute freshwater snails of the genus Acrorbis. Only one species, Acrorbis petricola, is currently included within this genus, whose geographical distribution is restricted to three known populations, one in Brazil and the other two in Argentina. Because of habitat specificity and limited geographical distribution, the species is considered vulnerable in Argentina and endangered in Brazil.

The exotic land gastropod Ovachlamys fulgens (Gude, 1900), aka the jumping snail, was registered in Eldorado city, Misiones province, constituting the first documented record of that species in Argentina-and for all of South America as well. Identities of the individuals were confirmed through morphological examination, and by a DNA sequencing of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene. DNA sequences for the mitochondrial 16S-rRNA and the nuclear 18S-rRNA genes were also obtained from the morphologically-confirmed specimens to gain insights into the genetic background of this species in Argentina, and as additional markers for enhancing the rapidity of identification by governmental authorities who are responsible for managing the presence of exotic species.

Sinotaia quadrata is a snail native from Asia recorded for the first time in South America in 2009 in central Argentina. In 2015, this species was also found in a lowland stream with different water qualities. Our aims were to contribute to the knowledge of its population ecology and to compare the individuals from the two locations anatomically.

Schistosomiasis remains a major parasitic disease, endemic in large parts of South America. Five neotropical species of have been found to act as intermediate hosts of in natural populations, while others have been shown to be susceptible in experimental infections, although not found infected in the field. Among these potential intermediate hosts, represents the most widespread species in South America, with confirmed occurrence records from Venezuela to northern Patagonia.

Article Synopsis
  • Highly endemic snails of the genus Aylacostoma in the High Paraná River are facing extinction due to habitat loss from the Yacyretá Reservoir impoundment; two species are in conservation programs while two others are presumed extinct.
  • The study provides the first molecular data for the extinct A. stigmaticum using historical DNA analysis, revealing it as a distinct evolutionary genetic species and exploring its evolutionary history through mitochondrial DNA sequences.
  • Findings indicate that DNA can be successfully extracted from specimens up to 80 years old, demonstrating the potential for museum collections to aid in understanding evolutionary patterns in gastropods.

The species of the genus Drepanotrema, most of them endemic to the Neotropical region, belong to the Planorbidae. Of the nine species of this genus, six are found in Argentina. The present investigation analysed the individual growth of Drepanotrema cimex in Arenalcito pond (34°11' S, 58°15' W), Martín García Island Natural Reserve of Multiple Uses, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina.

The Atlantic Forest represents one of the global priority eco-regions for biodiversity conservation. In Argentina, this is represented by the Paranense Forest, which occupies much of the Misiones Province. In this paper, an updated list of land mollusks from Misiones Province is presented, and its species richness was evaluated comparing protected and unprotected areas.

The Island of Martin Garcia is located in the Upper Río de la Plata, to the south of mouth the Uruguay River. The aim of the present study was to analyse the biodiversity of the island freshwater mollusks and their relationships to environmental variables. Twelve sampling sites were selected, five were along the littoral section of the island and seven were Inland ponds.

A report and an updated list with comments on the species of freshwater molluscs of Argentina which covers an area of 2 777 815 km2 is presented. Distributions of Gastropoda and Bivalvia families, endemic, exotic, invasive as well as entities of sanitary importance are also studied and recommendations on their conservation are provided. Molluscs related to the Del Plata Basin have been thoroughly studied in comparison to others areas of the country.

General practitioners (GP's) presence is homogeneously distributed in the Lombardy territory. GP's are easy accessible by people so they could play a key role in the prevention of overweight and obesity. In this study GP's included in everyday medical activity a primary prevention strategy regarding nutrition and lifestyle.

The specific identification of Lymnaeid snails is based on a comparison of morphological characters of the shell, radula, renal and reproductive organs. However, the identification is complicated by dissection process, intra and interspecific similarity and variability of morphological characters. In the present study, polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) techniques targeted to the first and second internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2) rDNA and to the mitochondrial 16S ribosomal gene (16S rDNAmt) were used to differentiate the species Lymnaea columella, L.

Liver adenomatosis is a rare disease--only 22 cases are previously described--characterized by multiple adenomas (more than ten) in a normal parenchyma. After a literature review the authors cannot exclude a link between the estroprogestatives use and the development of adenomatosis. Most important risks are bleeding and development of new adenomas, after the operation.

The biliary cystadenocarcinoma is a rare liver neoplasm with a preoperative difficult diagnosis to make, but increased by ultrasonography. Is reported the case of a caucasian male 78 years old, operated 11 years previously for partial resection of a benign liver cyst. Recurrent cholangitis and obstructive jaundice required a reoperation for right hepatectomy.

The authors report a case of a large monolocular liver abscess in a patient with gallbladder and choledocic stones and biliary stent, complicated by rupture into the peritoneal cavity, that required surgical treatment. Surgical exploration versus other approach results the choice treatment, as shown by resolution of the pathology.

This study aims to analyze the age structure of a population of Biomphalaria occidentalis on a pond of Riachuelo river basin, which is one of the three most important Middle Paraná river affluents in Corrientes province. Samples were drawn from three stations, where spatial and temporal numerical variations of the snail, as well as its relation with different environmental parameters, mainly temperature, rainfall, pH and conductivity, were analyzed. Snail abundance is given in number of individuals/hour.

Considering the possibility of introduction of schistosomiasis mansoni into Argentina as a consequence of dam construction on the Rio De La Plata basin, preliminary studies have been carried out on agrosystems such as ricefields in Corrientes province with the following purposes: 1) to survey and estimate the relative abundance of planorbids and identify potential vector species; 2) to identify environmental factors capable of influencing Biomphalaria population dynamics; and 3) to find out snail-parasite associations and estimate snail infection rates in order to detect possible competitive interactions between larval stages of native trematodes that could be used in biological control of Schistosoma mansoni. Three potential schistosome vectors were detected in ricefields, namely Biomphalaria straminea, B. tenagophila and B.
