Reuse of medical face masks in domestic and community settings without sacrificing safety: Ecological and economical lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The need for personal protective equipment increased exponentially in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. To cope with the mask shortage during springtime 2020, a French consortium was created to find ways to reuse medical and respiratory masks in healthcare departments. The consortium addressed the complex context of the balance between cleaning medical masks in a way that maintains their safety and functionality for reuse, with the environmental advantage to manage medical disposable waste despite the current mask designation as single-use by the regulatory frameworks.

Health workers perception on telemedicine in management of neuropsychiatric symptoms in long-term care facilities: Two years follow-up.

The management of neuropsychiatric symptoms is a challenge in long-term care facilities. Our objective was to assess the perception of telemedicine, as a useful tool to connect staff to specialized units. In this multicenter prospective study, 90 patients from ten facilities benefited from 180 sessions over two years.

The European Society of Cardiology Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Survey II: A comparison of cardiac resynchronization therapy implantation practice in Europe and France.

Background: The first European Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) Survey, conducted in 2008-2009, showed considerable variations in guideline adherence and implantation practice. A second prospective survey (CRT Survey II) was then performed to describe contemporary clinical practice regarding CRT among 42 European countries.

Aim: To compare the characteristics of French CRT recipients with the overall European population of CRT Survey II.

Information and Communication Technologies, a Promising Way to Support Pharmacotherapy for the Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia.

Health care systems face an expansion in the number of older individuals with a high prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases and related behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSDs). Health care providers are expected to develop innovative solutions to manage and follow up patients over time in the community. To date, we are unable to continuously and accurately monitor the nature, frequency, severity, impact, progression, and response to treatment of BPSDs after the initial assessment.

Telemedicine for the management of neuropsychiatric symptoms in long-term care facilities: the DETECT study, methods of a cluster randomised controlled trial to assess feasibility.

Introduction: Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPSs) in elderly patients with dementia are frequent in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) and are associated with adverse events. Telemedicine is an emerging way to provide consultation and care to dependent LTCF residents who may not have easy access to specialty services. Several studies have evaluated telemedicine for dementia care but to date, no study has evaluated its impact in the management of NPS in patients with dementia living in LTCF.

Modified bathroom scale and balance assessment: a comparison with clinical tests.

Frailty and detection of fall risk are major issues in preventive gerontology. A simple tool frequently used in daily life, a bathroom scale (balance quality tester: BQT), was modified to obtain information on the balance of 84 outpatients consulting at a geriatric clinic. The results computed from the BQT were compared to the values of three geriatric tests that are widely used either to detect a fall risk or frailty (timed get up and go: TUG; 10 m walking speed: WS; walking time: WT; one-leg stand: OS).

Telemedicine framework using case-based reasoning with evidences.

Telemedicine is the medical practice of information exchanged from one location to another through electronic communications to improve the delivery of health care services. This research article describes a telemedicine framework with knowledge engineering using taxonomic reasoning of ontology modeling and semantic similarity. In addition to being a precious support in the procedure of medical decision-making, this framework can be used to strengthen significant collaborations and traceability that are important for the development of official deployment of telemedicine applications.

Aging society and gerontechnology: a solution for an independent living?

Recent studies report that the majority of older adults wish to live in their own homes, for as long as possible. This creates a growing interest in technologies to enable older people to remain living independently at home. The purpose of this article is to provide a narrative review of current technology appropriate for older adults' home use.

Home care robot for socially supporting the elderly: focus group studies in three European countries to screen user attitudes and requirements.

The growing number of elderly individuals presents new challenges for society. Many elderly individuals have physical or cognitive impairments and require support from caregivers. An attempt to overcome the limitations caused by the lack of human caregivers is the inclusion of assistive technology such as socially active robots.

Transseptal implantation of a left ventricular pacing lead for an ectopic location of the coronary sinus ostium in the left atrium.

Congenital abnormalities of the coronary sinus (CS) are rare but can be responsible for unsuccessful implantation of a cardiac resynchronization therapy device. We report the case of an ectopic drainage of the CS in the left atrium. A left ventricular lead was implanted by the transseptal route.

ST-segment changes after direct current external cardioversion for atrial fibrillation. Incidence, characteristics and predictive factors.

Background: Incidence, characteristics and predictive factors of transient ST-segment changes after DC shock are poorly known.

Methods: 91 consecutive pts referred for external cardioversion of atrial fibrillation (AF) (61 men, 69±10 yo) were prospectively included. The presence of ST elevation or depression was assessed on 12 lead-ECG immediately after the first DC shock.

Fall detection--principles and methods.

Fall detection of the elderly is a major public health problem. Thus it has generated a wide range of applied research and prompted the development of telemonitoring systems to enable the early diagnosis of fall conditions. This article is a survey of systems, algorithms and sensors, for the automatic early detection of the fall of elderly persons.

Ambient multi-perceptive system with electronic mail for a residential health monitoring system.

Based on several years of experiments, we propose a model of information systems for residential healthcare, and technical guide to select available hard and software technologies. An implementation is described, based on Emails. The system is under experimentation within the framework of the French national project AILISA.

[Evaluation of left ventricular diastolic function in children by doppler tissue imaging].

Left ventricular diastolic function may change at an early stage in cardiac disease. It is often difficult to assess in daily practice. The use of Doppler tissue imaging at the annulus has been validated in adults.

Optimal pacing in congenital complete atrioventricular block of immunological origin: interest of multisite stimulation.

An infant with a congenital auriculoventricular block (CAVB) of immunological origin was diagnosed prenatally. The mother had Gougerot-Sjögren disease with positive anti-Sjogren's Syndrome A (SSA) and Sjogren's Syndrome B (SSB) serologies. Cardiac pacing was necessary and the epicardial route was chosen.

[Very large cardiac tumor revealed by ventricular arrhythmia in a 18-month-old infant].

Cardiac tumors are rare in childhood and can be revealed by arrhythmias. We report the observation of an 18-month-old infant who had an episode of ventricular tachycardia (VT) which resulted in a large intramyocardic tumour diagnosis evocating a left ventricular fibroma. A treatment by amiodarone allowed a stable reduction of the VT.

[A rare association of double discordance with aortic arch anomalies: value of multislice CT scan].

The authors report the case of a 14 month old infant admitted for intermittent stridor. Routine echocardiography showed atrioventricular and ventriculo-arterial discordance with an intact septum and situs solitus with levocardia. Multislice CT scan showed tracheal compression due to a Neuhauser anomaly of the aortic arches.

[New approach to perimembranous ventricular septal defect by real-time 3D echocardiography].

Perimembranous ventricular septal defects (VSD) have a close anatomical relationship to the aortic and tricuspid valve which may make percutaneous closure difficult. The authors' objective was to study the anatomy of perimembranous VSD by real-time 3D echocardiography. Fourteen patients aged 1 day to 3 years (mean 3 months) underwent transthoracic 2D and 3D echocardiography.

[Dysphagia, a geriatric point of view].

Dysphagia is most common in geriatric medicine. Aspirations may cause chronic inflammatory syndrome or acute pneumonia or heart failure. At-risk patients should be recognised: some risks are caused by an acute condition, some by chronic disease or handicap.

Ultrasounds: an industrial solution to optimise costs, environmental requests and quality for textile finishing.

Ultrasounds are widely used at industrial scale for cleaning of mechanical pieces for example. Potential applications exist for finishing of textiles. This work aimed to improve traditional textile finishing processes thanks to ultrasound.
