Article Synopsis
  • Meningiomas are classified into three grades based on their characteristics, but this grading does not always predict patient outcomes effectively.
  • A study evaluated the presence of estrogen and progesterone receptors, along with the proliferation marker Ki-67, across these grades to assess their correlation with tumor behavior.
  • Results showed that while grade 1 tumors exhibited higher positivity for hormone receptors and lower proliferation rates, higher grades demonstrated significant increases in Ki-67 expression, indicating a relationship between tumor grade and growth potential.
  • The findings suggest that Ki-67 is a valuable tool for predicting tumor behavior, while progesterone receptor status may indicate better prognosis in meningioma patients.

  • Atopic dermatitis (AD) is an ongoing skin inflammatory condition, and recent evidence suggests that TGF-β1 plays a role in its inflammation and tissue changes.
  • A study involving 37 participants, including 25 with AD, analyzed mRNA and protein levels of TGF-β1 and SMAD3, finding a significant increase in TGF-β1 levels in AD-affected skin and a decrease in SMAD3 expression.
  • The results indicate that the signaling pathway involving TGF-β1 and SMAD3 is disrupted in AD, highlighting TGF-β1's potential importance in the disease's severity and development.

Article Synopsis
  • CCAM (Congenital Cystic Adenomatoid Malformations) are rare lung anomalies resulting from developmental issues in the bronchial tree during the first trimester, commonly leading to symptoms like recurrent pneumonia and breathing difficulties.
  • The study analyzed 21 patients, mostly under 2 years old, focusing on their clinical profiles, histological classifications (with Type 1 being the most prevalent), and outcomes post-surgery, where all patients survived and experienced low rates of respiratory infections.
  • Findings indicate that early surgical intervention is crucial for managing CCAM and improving patient outcomes, with no malignant transformations observed in the cases studied.

Background: Urinary bladder urothelial carcinoma (UBUC) and upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) harbor analogous morphology with comparable cytogenetic changes as well as prognostic factors but their similar biological activities still remain controversial. SLITRK6 gene has been demonstrated to have distinct role in urothelial cancers with a distinction between UTUC and UBUC.

Method: The study included a total of 80 patients of urothelial carcinoma including 60 UBUC and 20 UTUC cases.

  • Primary pulmonary adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare lung cancer, has unclear clinical features and survival rates; this study examines its characteristics in north India.
  • Of 6050 lung tumors analyzed, only 10 were identified as adenoid cystic carcinomas, primarily affecting younger individuals, with a notable survival difference: 85.7% for resectable tumors versus 33.3% for unresectable ones.
  • Key factors influencing patient outcomes include tumor operability, presence of metastasis at diagnosis, and surgical margin status, emphasizing the importance of surgery in treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • - Atopic Dermatitis (AD) is a chronic skin condition linked to inflammation, and the study focuses on the role of TGF-β1 genetic variants (rs1800469 and rs1800468) in AD susceptibility and related factors like mRNA expression and serum levels.
  • - The study involved 246 participants, with genotyping performed to determine TGF-β1 promoter polymorphisms, and various measures, including TGF-β1 levels and allergy tests, were conducted to analyze their relationship with AD.
  • - Results indicated that specific genetic variants are more common in AD patients, with significant correlations found between TGF-β1 levels and disease severity, the presence of allergies, and overall quality of life in affected

Article Synopsis
  • Schwannomas are non-cancerous tumors that develop from Schwann cells in the nerve sheath and can occur anywhere in the body.
  • The study focuses on five cases of lung schwannoma, highlighting the challenges in diagnosing these tumors, particularly in uncommon locations.
  • Diagnosis relies on specific immuno-histochemical markers, and accurately identifying these tumors can improve pre-operative evaluations and surgical outcomes for patients.

Context: Gliomas are the most common brain tumors. In addition to conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, a variety of new techniques offers more than the anatomic information. The new MRI techniques include perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI).

Article Synopsis
  • Meningiomas account for 15%-20% of primary intracranial tumors and are usually benign, with a high cure rate post-surgery, although some can be aggressive and recur.
  • The study analyzed 254 patients over 11 years at a medical institute in Kashmir, focusing on tumor demographics, location, histological subtype, and recurrence based on WHO classification.
  • Results showed a higher prevalence in females (especially in spinal meningiomas) and a low recurrence rate of 3.93%, linked to the Simpson grade of tumor excision and the histopathological grade.

Introduction: Computed tomography (CT)-guided biopsy of spine is currently a valuable diagnostic tool and effective technique for diagnosing and planning a proper therapeutic strategy for certain spinal lesions. The reported diagnostic accuracy of core biopsy ranges from 77% to 97%.

Materials And Methods: We included all patients with spinal lesions suspicious of metastasis on magnetic resonance imaging, who presented between May 2012 and April 2014 and underwent CT-guided biopsy in our study.

Objectives: To study the cytological patterns of fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) obtained from space-occupying lesions (SOLs) of the liver with an aim to differentiate primary hepatocellular carcinoma from metastatic deposits and to evaluate the added advantage and efficacy of studying cell blocks in conjunction with smears for enhancing diagnostic accuracy.  .

Methods: This prospective study took place over two years (September 2007 to 2009) and included 61 patients with cases of liver SOLs that were clinically or radiologically suspicious for malignancy and who were referred for computed tomography or ultrasonography-guided FNAC.
