Article Synopsis
  • The implementation of laboratory information systems (LIS) in healthcare has improved the ability to collect and analyze large volumes of lab data, as part of Russia's goal to create a unified digital healthcare circuit.
  • The study aimed to assess blood glucose levels and carbohydrate metabolism in various age groups during and after COVID-19, using data from city hospitals and labs.
  • Findings revealed significant increases in blood glucose during the COVID-19 pandemic for all age groups, with older adults showing the most pronounced negative effects, while middle-aged individuals saw a post-COVID decrease in glucose levels.

The topic of the timing of the manifestation of age-associated diseases (as an indirect indicator of accelerated population aging) after the transfer of COVID-19 remains an urgent area in scientific research. Early targeted diagnosis can significantly reduce the consequences of pathology, in connection with which the features of the manifestation of various nosologies in the post-COVID period were studied. The materials were the accounting and statistical data of the municipal polyclinics of the Sakhalin Region for the pre-COVID (2017-2019) and post-COVID (2022-2023) periods.

In the treatment of coronavirus infections, it is important not only to understand the course of the disease, but also to understand what is happening in the human body, especially in the circulatory system, that is, which disorders lead to deterioration and further complications. Hemostasis disorder in COVID-19 plays an important role in the etiology and clinical manifestations of the disease. The ability to identify factors and risk groups for the development of thrombotic complications, the ability to dynamically interpret peripheral blood parameters and coagulograms, knowledge of diagnostic criteria for possible hemostasis disorders (for example, DIC syndrome, sepsis-associated coagulopathy, antiphospholipids, hemophagocytosis and hypercoagulation syndrome) are necessary to determine the indications for the test.

Communication is considered as one of the basic human needs. For a long time, loneliness and social isolation were mainly considered as a psychosocial problem. However, in the recent years, there has been increasing evidence of the possible impact of loneliness and social isolation on the development and clinical course of somatic diseases.

It is widely known that in economically developed countries there is an increase in the proportion of older people. However, the problem of the influence of territorial features of economic development on the rate of population aging is not sufficiently covered. The goal was to study the impact of economic development indicators (EDI) on the processes of premature aging of the population.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze the balance and sensory organization in women aged 85-95 years, focusing on two age groups: 85-89 and 90-95 years.
  • Evaluations using a dynamic posturographic system showed no significant differences in balance performance or sensory information control between the two age groups, indicating stability in balance function despite aging.
  • The findings suggest that older women, particularly those 90-95, may maintain effective sensory integration for balance and spatial orientation, hinting at factors that contribute to active longevity.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers synthesized special fluorescent β-lactam substrates from cephalosporin to study their interaction with three types of β-lactamase enzymes: TEM-1, p99, and a Bacillus cereus enzyme.
  • The most effective substrate used difluorofluorescein linked to two cephalosporin units, ensuring that the final product was a bright fluorescent acid rather than a dimmer compound.
  • The hydrolysis rates varied depending on pH and the type of chemical linker used, indicating that the enzyme activity is influenced by these factors; K(m) values for the new substrates were comparable to known values for penicillin G and ampicillin.

We describe the synthesis of two novel well-defined tower-shaped 1,3,5-trisubstituted adamantanes 30 and 33 that incorporate a macrocyclic trilactam ring system. Each nanoscale molecule has a broad tripodal base consisting of three identical sulfur-containing termini as the tripod feet, 4-acetylsulfanylmethylphenyl units in the case of 30 and 3,5-bis(acetylsulfanylmethyl)phenyl units in the case of 33. The sulfur atoms are designed to bind the molecules trivalently to the apex of a gold-coated commercial AFM tip through formation of three S-Au bonds.

The synthesis of four novel nanoscale 1,3,5,7-tetrasubstituted adamantanes 22 and 25-27 designed for atomic force microscopy (AFM) applications is described. Each tetrahedrally shaped molecule incorporates a broad tripodal base made up of three identical legs that terminate with a sulfur-containing moiety, which is either a 4-acetylsulfanylmethylphenyl unit or else a (1,2,5-dithiazepan-1-yl)phenyl unit. The sulfur atoms are intended for eventual binding of the molecule multivalently to the apex of a gold-coated commercial AFM tip through formation of multiple S-Au bonds.

Calcium (Ca(2+)) fluoroionophores are useful in cell-based functional assays of G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) activation or ion channel modulation. In this paper we describe new calcium probes that improve or overcome certain deficiencies in existing probes. These new fluoroionophores are based on acylation of amino-BAPTA [BAPTA = glycine, N,N'-(1,2-ethanediyl-bis(oxy-2,1-phenylene)) bis(N-(carboxymethyl))] with fluorescent BODIPY(R) propionates [BODIPY = 4,4-difluoro-5,7-dimethyl- 4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene].

Two novel water-soluble fluorescein myo-inositol phosphate (FLIP) substrates, butyl-FLIP and methyl-FLIP, were used to examine the kinetics and subsite interactions of Bacillus cereus phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C. Butyl-FLIP exhibited sigmoidal kinetics when initial rates are plotted versus substrate concentration. The data fit a Hill coefficient of 1.

[structure: see text] Tetrahedrally shaped nanoscale molecules 18-20 were synthesized from the corresponding tetraiodide by a series of Sonogashira coupling reactions. Three of the sulfur-containing termini are intended for eventual binding to a gold-coated conventional AFM tip, while the fourth terminus scans the sample. AFM images of 19 demonstrate that the molecule is sufficiently large and rigid to be imaged by a conventional AFM tip.

An improved synthesis of fluorogenic substrate analogues for phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C (PI-PLC) is described. The water-soluble substrates, which are derived from fluorescein, are not fluorescent until cleaved by the enzyme, and provide a convenient means to continuously monitor PI-PLC activity. The improvement in the synthesis lies in the method used to protect the hydroxyl groups of the inositol portion of the substrate molecule and allows a milder deprotection procedure to be used.

The synthesis of a fluorogenic substrate for mammalian phosphoinositide-specific phospholipase C is described. The substrate, based on the widely used fluorescein molecule, is a water-soluble substrate analog of phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate. The fluorogenic substrate 2 is shown to be a sensitive substrate for human PI-PLC-delta1 in a continuous assay.

The susceptibility of the taiga tick Ixodes persulcatus Schulze to 15 pyrethroids has been evaluated. The knockdown time after exposure of ticks to pyrethroids tested was quite similar. It was revealed that the lethal doses of type I pyrethroids (permethrin-like) induced the rapid attachment of ticks to host.
