Long-term monitoring of woody plants of Doñana shrublands (SW Spain) from 2008 to 2023.

Background: The long-term monitoring of the plant cover of Doñana shrublands is part of a harmonised protocol for the Long-term Ecological Monitoring Programme of Natural Resources and Processes targeting Terrestrial Vegetation. The general aim of this protocol is to monitor and assess the dynamics and trends of shrubland plant communities in Doñana. For shrublands, percentage cover is recorded annually, starting in 2008, by the Doñana Long-Term Monitoring Team in one field sampling campaign per year during the flowering season (between March and May) across 21 permanent square plots (15 m x 15 m).

Lymph Node Molecular Analysis with OSNA Enables the Identification of pT1 CRC Patients at Risk of Recurrence: A Multicentre Study.

Early-stage colorectal carcinoma (CRC)-pT1-is a therapeutic challenge and presents some histological features related to lymph node metastasis (LNM). A significant proportion of pT1 CRCs are treated surgically, resulting in a non-negligible surgical-associated mortality rate of 1.5-2%.

Dielectric Characterization of Breast Biopsied Tissues as Pre-Pathological Aid in Early Cancer Detection: A Blinded Feasibility Study.

Dielectric characterization has significant potential in several medical applications, providing valuable insights into the electromagnetic properties of biological tissues for disease diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring of therapeutic interventions. This work presents the use of a custom-designed electromagnetic characterization system, based on an open-ended coaxial probe, for discriminating between benign and malignant breast tissues in a clinical setting. The probe's development involved a well-balanced compromise between physical feasibility and its combined use with a reconstruction algorithm known as the virtual transmission line model (VTLM).

Primary Ewing's sarcoma of the small intestine.

17 year old female teenager with abdominal pain secondary to pelvic mass of 12 x 10 cm, which seems to depend on ovary. Surgery is scheduled for removal of the tumor, during which it is observed that the lesion originates in the ileum. The histopathological study shows a neoplasm of small round cells with nucleoli and scant cytoplasm.

Effective treatment of autoimmune hepatitis-primary biliary cholangitis overlap syndrome with obeticholic acid.

There is no consensus treatment for patients with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) - primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) overlap syndrome who are not responding to conventional therapy. We present a case of a 43-yr-old woman with AIH-PBC overlap syndrome treated with obeticholic acid (OCA). The patient showed a reduction in liver enzymes and no fibrosis progression during 15 months of follow up.

Characteristics and survival of hepatocellular carcinoma in non-cirrhotic liver.

Introduction: the characteristics, screening, and survival of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) for patients without cirrhosis have not been fully studied.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed in non-cirrhotic patients with histological HCC, between January 2004 and October 2018. Their characteristics, treatment, follow-up and overall survival were described.

Diagnostic value of halo sign in young women (aged 45 to 49 years) in a breast screening programme with synthesized 2D mammography.

Objective:: To assess the clinical performance of the halo sign in tomosynthesis and synthesized 2D mammography, and to identify age groups where its diagnostic value may be greater.

Methods:: 183 patients with nodules were recalled from the breast screening programme (with tomosynthesis and 2D synthesized mammograms). The patients were separated into two groups, 45-49 years and 50-69 years, and depending on the presence or not of halo sign.

Style polymorphism in Linum (Linaceae): a case of Mediterranean parallel evolution?

Heterostyly is a sex polymorphism that has challenged evolutionary biologists ever since Darwin. One of the lineages where heterostyly and related stylar conditions appear more frequently is Linum (Linaceae). This group is particularly suitable for testing competing hypotheses about ancestral and transitional stages on the evolutionary building up of heterostyly.

Flow cytometry of duodenal intraepithelial lymphocytes improves diagnosis of celiac disease in difficult cases.

Background: Diagnosis of celiac disease is difficult when the combined results of serology and histology are inconclusive. Studies using flow cytometry of intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) have found that celiac patients have increased numbers of γδ IELs, along with a decrease in CD3-CD103 + IELs.

Objective: The objective of this article is to assess the role of flow cytometric analysis of IELs in the diagnosis of celiac disease in difficult cases.

Characterization of invisible breast cancers in digital mammography and tomosynthesis: radio-pathological correlation.

Objective: To review the radio-pathologic features of symptomatic breast cancers not detected at digital mammography (DM) and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT).

Material And Methods: Retrospective analysis of 169 lesions from symptomatic patients with breast cancer that were studied with DM, DBT, ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance (MR). We identified occult lesions (true false negatives) in DM and DBT.

Persistent organic pollutant levels in eggs of leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) point to a decrease in hatching success.

Sea turtles are susceptible to environmental pollution, since many harmful effects have been reported for different chemicals over the last two decades. In this context, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are of particular concern due to their endocrine-disrupting nature. The aims of this study were to provide additional baseline data on PCB and PBDE concentrations in eggs of Dermochelys coriacea; and to investigate whether any of the congeners could compromise reproductive success in this species.

RENACER study: Assessment of 12-month efficacy and safety of 168 certolizumab PEGol rheumatoid arthritis-treated patients from a Spanish multicenter national database.

Objective: To assess effectiveness and safety of certolizumab PEGol (CZP) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients after 12 months of treatment and to detect predictors of response.

Methods: Observational longitudinal prospective study of RA patients from 35 sites in Spain. Variables (baseline, 3- and 12-month assessment): sociodemographics, previous Disease Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drug (DMARD) and previous Biological Therapies (BT) use; TJC, SJC, ESR, CRP, DAS28, SDAI.

Three molecular classifications surrogate to four immunohistochemical markers in 374 invasive breast carcinomas with long follow-up: which is better?

In the early 21st century, a new way to classify breast cancer appeared, based on their gene expression profiles. Various classifications have been proposed in an attempt to subrogate these molecular groups to an immunohistochemical expression of estrogen and progesterone receptors, HER2 and Ki67. We compared the three major molecular classifications (MCs) of 374 infiltrating breast carcinomas with the assumption that one is better than the others to discriminate the prognosis of patients that are classified by it.

Mutilating/resorptive arthritis. A study of 24 patients in a series of 360 patients with psoriatic arthritis.

Objective: To describe a large series of patients with mutilans/resorptive arthritis (AM) of a representative population of patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and analyze the associated variables.

Methods: Multicenter cross-sectional study of consecutive patients affected by PsA in 8 centers. In patients with swelling or deformity of the hands or feet we performed an anteroposterior rx.

[Haematogenous vertebral osteomyelitis. Experience of a primary care hospital].

Objectives: To describe a series of patients with haematogenous vertebral osteomyelitis (HVO) in a primary care hospital. The results were compared with other Spanish and foreign series.

Patients And Methods: The files of patients with HVO diagnosed in the Viladecans hospital from 1993 through 2008, were retrospectively reviewed.

Background And Objective: To present the short, medium and long-term results of a stop-smoking clinic after 5 years of experience. The clinic was designed following the SEPAR Recommendations.

Patients And Methods: Two types of clinic protocols have been applied: individual and group.

[Transitional cell tumor in a 12-year-old patient].

Transitional cell papillomas, which are tumors of epithelial origin, are the most common urinary tract neoplasm in adults but are extremely rare in children. In both groups the main location is the bladder, often around one of the ureteric orifices. Symptoms vary widely but the most frequent is gross hematuria.

[Septic arthritis caused by S. pneumoniae. Report of 2 cases with unusual location].

Arthritis by S. pneumoniae, although no frequent, is a well-known disease in patients with underlying diseases and in which they complaint previous articular disease. In the present article 2 cases of location in shoulder and sacroiliac joints are described respectively in a woman with multiple myeloma and an esplenectomizaded man, associations nondescribed previously in literature.

Study of the immunostimulating effect of IM-104 in mice.

The results of this study show that the product IM-104 has a marked immunostimulant effect, when administered intraperitoneally in mice, as seen by the increase in the number of haemolytic plaque-forming cells producing antibodies against sheep erythrocytes, as compared with saline-treated controls.

[Reactive arthritis. Prospective clinico-microbiologic study].

We study with a prospective design all reactive arthritis diagnosed at the Service of Rheumatology in Bellvitge Hospital during a thirty months period, from August 1985 to February 1988; in order to describe its clinical features, etiological factors and prognosis. Thirty patients who fulfilled the admission criteria were admitted to the study. A previously designed protocol of clinical, serological and microbiologic study was applied to all.

Munchausen's syndrome simulating reflex sympathetic dystrophy.

A 15 year old girl who had pain, oedema of her left hand, and fever of four months' duration is described. Marked demineralisation of her hand was shown by radiography, and increased articular uptake by technetium-99m bone scan. All these changes were indistinguishable from reflex sympathetic dystrophy.
