One-year survival in recipients older than 50 bridged to heart transplant with Impella 5.5 via axillary approach.

Background: Optimizing patients with advanced heart failure before orthotopic heart transplantation (OHT), especially in patients greater than 50 years old, is imperative to achieving successful post-transplant outcomes. Complications are well-described for patients bridged to transplant (BTT) with durable left ventricular assist device (LVAD) support. Given the lack of data available in older recipients after the recent increase in mechanical support use, we felt it crucial to report our center's one-year outcomes in older recipients after heart transplantation with percutaneously placed Impella 5.

Primary pulmonary lymphoma in Peru.

Objective: To describe the clinical features, imaging, pathology and management of patients with primary pulmonary lymphoma (PPL).

Methodology: This is a case series study involving a retrospective analysis of 24 patients diagnosed with PPL between the years 2000-2019 at Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplásicas in Lima, Perú.

Genomic Evaluation of Clinically Ambiguous Pigmented Lesions.

The clinical evaluation of pigmented lesions represents a 'high-stakes' scenario as a missed melanoma can be fatal. Traditional clinical assessment visually sorts pigmented lesions into those that merit a biopsy and those that do not. In our practice there exists a group of lesions judged to not merit biopsy where melanoma, while very unlikely, cannot be excluded with absolute certainty.

Novel valproate half-sandwich rhodium and iridium conjugates to fight against multidrug-resistant Gram-positive bacteria.

New valproate Ir(III) and Rh(III) half-sandwich conjugates containing a C,N-phenylbenzimidazole chelated ligand have been synthesized and characterized. The valproic acid conjugation to organometallic fragments seems to switch on the antibacterial activity of the complexes towards and Gram-positive bacteria.

Physician Views on the Provision of Information on Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor Therapy to Patients with Cancer and Pre-Existing Autoimmune Disease: A Qualitative Study.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have improved cancer outcomes but can cause severe immune-related adverse events (irAEs) and flares of autoimmune conditions in cancer patients with pre-existing autoimmune disease. The objective of this study was to identify the information physicians perceived as most useful for these patients when discussing treatment initiation with ICIs. Twenty physicians at a cancer institution with experience in the treatment of irAEs were interviewed.

Plasma concentrations of lysophosphatidic acid and the expression of its receptors in peripheral blood mononuclear cells are altered in patients with cocaine use disorders.

We have recently reported alterations in the plasma concentrations of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) in patients with substance use disorders. In order to further explore the potential role of the LPA signaling system as biomarker in cocaine use disorders (CUD) we conducted a cross-sectional study with 105 patients diagnosed with CUD and 92 healthy controls. Participants were clinically evaluated and blood samples were collected to determine plasma concentrations of total LPA and LPA species (16:0-, 18:0-, 18:1-, 18:2-, and 20:4-LPA), and the gene expression of LPA and LPA receptors in peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

Quality improvement intervention to increase colorectal cancer screening at the primary care setting: a cluster-randomised controlled trial.

Background: Approximately 81% of deaths in Argentina are from chronic non-communicable diseases and 21% caused by cancer. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most frequent cancer in Argentina. Even though CRC screening has been recommended for adults from 50 to 75 years old by using a faecal immunochemical test (FIT) annually, screening rates remain below 20% in the country.

Interdisciplinary Weight Loss and Lifestyle Intervention for Daily Functioning and Psychiatric Symptoms in Obstructive Sleep Apnea: The INTERAPNEA Randomized Clinical Trial.

Impaired daily functioning and psychiatric symptoms are highly prevalent in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA); however, the effects of weight loss and lifestyle interventions on these symptoms remain uncertain. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of an interdisciplinary weight loss and lifestyle intervention on impaired functioning, psychological distress, anxiety, and depression among men with moderate-to-severe OSA and obesity. This study was a randomized clinical trial conducted from April 2019 to October 2020.

Screening for Anxiety Disorders in Adults: US Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation Statement.

Importance: Anxiety disorders are commonly occurring mental health conditions. They are often unrecognized in primary care settings and substantial delays in treatment initiation occur.

Objective: The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) commissioned a systematic review to evaluate the benefits and harms of screening for anxiety disorders in asymptomatic adults.

A comparison of three methods to determine the subject matter in textual data.

This study compares three different methods commonly employed for the determination and interpretation of the subject matter of large corpuses of textual data. The methods reviewed are: (1) topic modeling, (2) community or group detection, and (3) cluster analysis of semantic networks. Two different datasets related to health topics were gathered from Twitter posts to compare the methods.

Catalytic generation of -quinone dimethides donor/donor rhodium carbenes.

Substrates engineered to undergo a 1,4-C-H insertion to yield benzocyclobutenes resulted in a novel elimination reaction to yield -quinone dimethide (-QDM) intermediates that undergo Diels-Alder or hetero-Diels-Alder cycloadditions. The analogous benzylic acetals or ethers avoid the C-H insertion pathway completely and, after hydride transfer, undergo a de-aromatizing elimination reaction to -QDM at ambient temperature. The resulting dienes undergo a variety of cycloaddition reactions with high diastereo- and regio-selectivity.

Membrane plasticity induced by -inositol derived archaeal lipids: chemical synthesis and biophysical characterization.

Archaeal membrane lipids have specific structures that allow Archaea to withstand extreme conditions of temperature and pressure. In order to understand the molecular parameters that govern such resistance, the synthesis of 1,2-di--phytanyl--3-phosphoinositol (DoPhPI), an archaeal lipid derived from -inositol, is reported. Benzyl protected -inositol was first prepared and then transformed to phosphodiester derivatives using a phosphoramidite based-coupling reaction with archaeol.

Circulating bile acids (BA) are signaling molecules that control glucose and lipid metabolism. However, the effects of acute exercise on plasma levels of BA in humans remain poorly understood. is an opportunistic pathogen, often associated with nosocomial infections. Ten were isolated from clinical samples during the period January 2021 and June 2022. Eight (80%) patients had cancer as a background disease and 2 patients had coronavirus disease 2019.

Exploring Structure-Activity Relationships in Photodynamic Therapy Anticancer Agents Based on Ir(III)-COUPY Conjugates.

Photodynamic therapy holds great promise as a non-invasive anticancer tool against drug-resistant cancers. However, highly effective, non-toxic, and reliable photosensitizers with operability under hypoxic conditions remain to be developed. Herein, we took the advantageous properties of COUPY fluorophores and cyclometalated Ir(III) complexes to develop novel PDT agents based on Ir(III)-COUPY conjugates with the aim of exploring structure-activity relationships.

Assessing workload in using electromyography (EMG)-based prostheses.

Using prosthetic devices requires a substantial cognitive workload. This study investigated classification models for assessing cognitive workload in electromyography (EMG)-based prosthetic devices with various types of input features including eye-tracking measures, task performance, and cognitive performance model (CPM) outcomes. Features selection algorithm, hyperparameter tuning with grid search, and k-fold cross-validation were applied to select the most important features and find the optimal models.

Safety and efficacy of silicone tape for indwelling urinary catheter fixation in intensive care patients-A randomized clinical trial.

Background: Critically ill patients are more vulnerable to medical adhesive-related skin injuries (MARSI), whose prevention is a constant challenge and one of the main quality indicators of nursing care. MARSI associated with indwelling urinary catheter (IUC) fixation is a relevant adverse event, mainly because of the constant involuntary traction and high skin vulnerability of the fixation site. Silicone adhesive tape has appreciable qualities for fragile skin among the range of adhesives, leading to the inference that it reduces the risk of MARSI.

The Relationship of Prolonged Grief Disorder Symptoms With Hemodynamic Response to Grief Recall Among Bereaved Adults.

Objective: Bereavement is among the most impactful psychosocial stressors for cardiovascular health, and hypertensive episodes accompanying bereavement-related distress are one putative mechanism for this effect. The present study examined hemodynamic responses to the Grief Recall (GR), a promising method for studying the effects of acute grief on cardiovascular function, and the relationship of grief severity to blood pressure (BP) response.

Methods: N = 59 participants within 1 year of the loss of a close loved one completed the GR, a semistructured interview protocol for eliciting bereavement-related distress (a "grief pang") and cardiovascular response.

Establishment of regression-based normative isometric strength values for major lower limb muscle groups in persons with multiple sclerosis.

Background: Limb weakness is a major impairment that affects mobility in persons with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). Specifically, lower limb (LL) weakness can greatly affect gait and balance, while increasing fall risk and decreasing quality of life. Numerous studies have compared LL strength of PwMS to healthy controls, however none have objectively measured strength in all major LL joints (hip, knee, and ankle) in a large number of PwMS.

Torque Teno Virus Load Predicts Opportunistic Infections after Kidney Transplantation but Is Not Associated with Maintenance Immunosuppression Exposure.

Measuring the non-pathogenic Torque Teno Virus (TTV) load allows assessing the net immunosuppressive state after kidney transplantation (KTx). Currently, it is not known how exposure to maintenance immunosuppression affects TTV load. We hypothesized that TTV load is associated with the exposure to mycophenolic acid (MPA) and tacrolimus.

Phytoplankton dynamics in the Mar Menor, a Mediterranean coastal lagoon strongly impacted by eutrophication.

The Mar Menor hypersaline coastal lagoon has suffered serious degradation in the last three decades attributable to nutrient pollution. In 2015, the lagoon experienced an intensive bloom of cyanobacteria that triggered a drastic change of its ecosystem. Our analyses indicate that phytoplankton in 2016-2021 did not present a seasonal variability pattern; the community was mainly dominated by diatoms and punctually reached abundance peaks above 10 cell L along with chlorophyll a concentrations exceeding 20 μg L.

Transcriptomic analysis of benznidazole-resistant and susceptible Trypanosoma cruzi populations.

Background: Chagas disease (CD), caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is a serious public health concern in Latin America. Nifurtimox and benznidazole (BZ), the only two drugs currently approved for the treatment of CD, have very low efficacies in the chronic phase of the disease and several toxic side effects. Trypanosoma cruzi strains that are naturally resistant to both drugs have been reported.
