Background: Dosimetry in intraoperative electron radiotherapy (IOERT) poses distinct challenges, especially with inclined applicators deviating from international protocols. Ion recombination in ionization chambers, electron beam degradation due to scattering in cylindrical applicators, coupled with a lack of a well-defined beam quality surrogate, complicate output factor determination with ionization chambers. Synthetic diamond-based detectors, offer potential solutions; however, their suitability requires further exploration.

Singlet fission (SF) materials used in light-harvesting devices must not only efficiently produce spin-triplet excitons but also transport them to an energy acceptor. ,'-Bis(2-phenylethyl)-3,4,9,10-perylenedicarboximide (EP-PDI) is a promising SF chromophore due to its photostability, large extinction coefficient, and high triplet yield, but the energy transport mechanisms in EP-PDI solids are minimally understood. Herein, we use transient absorption microscopy to directly characterize exciton transport in EP-PDI crystals.

Many factors affect an organism's microbiome including its environment, proximity to other organisms, and physiological condition. As filter feeders, bivalves have highly plastic microbiomes that are especially influenced by the surrounding seawater, yet they also maintain a unique core set of microbes. Using 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing, we characterized the bacterial microbiomes of four species of bivalves native to the Mid-Atlantic East Coast of North America: , and and assessed the impact of their external environment, internal parasites, and size on their microbial communities.

Introduction: Poststroke hyperglycaemia is an independent risk factor for poorer outcomes in patients treated with mechanical thrombectomy (MT) and is associated with a lower probability of functional recovery and higher mortality at 3 months. This study aims to evaluate the association between glucose levels during cerebral reperfusion with MT and functional recovery at 3 months, measured by subcutaneous continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices.

Methods: This prospective observational study aims to recruit 100 patients with ischaemic stroke and large anterior circulation vessel occlusion, in whom MT is indicated.

Tissues release microRNAs (miRNAs) in small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) including exosomes, which can regulate gene expression in distal cells, thus acting as modulators of local and systemic metabolism. Here, we show that insulin regulates miRNA secretion into sEVs from 3T3-L1 adipocytes and that this process is differentially regulated from cellular expression. Thus, of the 53 miRNAs upregulated and 66 miRNAs downregulated by insulin in 3T3-L1 sEVs, only 12 were regulated in parallel in cells.

Biotic interactions play a critical role in shaping patterns of global biodiversity. While several macroecological studies provide evidence for stronger predation in tropical regions compared with higher latitudes, results are variable even within the tropics, and the drivers of this variability are not well understood. We conducted two complementary standardized experiments on communities of sessile marine invertebrate prey and their associated predators to test for spatial and seasonal differences in predation across the tropical Atlantic and Pacific coastlines of Panama.

Background: Programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) expression is a well-known predictive biomarker of response to immune checkpoint blockade in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, there is limited evidence of the relationship between PD-L1 expression, clinicopathological features, and their association with major driver mutations in NSCLC patients in Latin America.

Methods: This retrospective study included patients from Argentina with advanced NSCLC, and centralized evaluation of PD-L1 expression concurrently with genomic alterations in the driver genes EGFR, ALK, ROS1, BRAF, and/or KRAS G12C in FFPE tissue samples.

Singlet fission produces a pair of low-energy spin-triplet excitons from a single high-energy spin-singlet exciton. While this process offers the potential to enhance the efficiency of silicon solar cells by ∼30%, meeting this goal requires overlayer materials that can efficiently transport triplet excitons to an underlying silicon substrate. Herein, we demonstrate that the chemical functionalization of silicon surfaces controls the structure of vapor-deposited thin films of perylenediimide (PDI) dyes, which are prototypical singlet fission materials.

The relationship between biodiversity and infectious disease, where increased biodiversity leads to decreased disease risk, originated from research in terrestrial disease systems and remains relatively underexplored in marine systems. Understanding the impacts of biodiversity on disease in marine versus terrestrial systems is key to continued marine ecosystem functioning, sustainable aquaculture, and restoration projects. We compare the biodiversity-disease relationship across terrestrial and marine systems, considering biodiversity at six levels: intraspecific host diversity, host microbiomes, interspecific host diversity, biotic vectors and reservoirs, parasite consumers, and parasites.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how various types of DNA, including double-stranded and plasmid DNA, interact with a specific rhenium complex known as Reptr.
  • The researchers utilized spectroscopic techniques and imaging methods like electrophoresis and AFM microscopy to analyze changes in DNA structure after these interactions.
  • Results indicate that these rhenium complexes can alter DNA structures, either by direct interaction that induces relaxation or through photoinduced cross-linking, with the extent of damage influenced by the types of co-ligands in the complex.
