Effective selenium supplementation strategies are essential for alleviating global selenium deficiency. This study utilized the high‑selenium-tolerant strain Lactiplantibacillus plantarum NML21 to produce selenium-enriched yogurt, successfully converting inorganic Se(IV) into organic selenium, with selenoproteins accounting for 69.52 % of the total selenium content (995.

In this experiment, waxy (Shuzi, P1) and non-waxy (Ningmei No. 14, P2) proso millet were used as experimental materials to study the quality changes of waxy and non-waxy proso millet in different sowing dates as well as the differences in the physical and chemical properties of starch, such as starch morphological structure, crystal structure and gelatinization properties. The results showed that with the postponement of the sowing date, the total starch contents of P1 and P2 decreased by 2 % - 7.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explores how the deworming drug closantel (CST) can reverse colistin resistance in mcr-1-positive E. coli, filling a gap in research on dosage for adjuvants in clinical therapy.
  • Utilizing various methods, the research demonstrates that CST has a unique dose-response relationship that is not reliant on higher concentrations for effectiveness.
  • The findings suggest that CST not only prevents the development of colistin resistance but also shows promising therapeutic effects when combined with colistin in a mouse infection model.

  • Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is linked to issues like obesity, high blood pressure, and inflammation, especially in older adults, and has mixed connections to dietary antioxidants like carotenoids in relation to heart disease.
  • A study analyzing data from over 6,600 participants aged 40 and up found an inverse relationship between serum lycopene levels (a type of carotenoid) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) deaths over a median follow-up of 16.8 years.
  • The results showed that higher lycopene levels corresponded with a reduced risk of CVD mortality, while no significant associations were found for other carotenoids studied.

Colistin (COL) is regarded as a last-resort treatment for infections by multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria. The emergence of colistin-resistant Enterobacterales poses a significant global public health concern. Our study discovered that niclosamide (NIC) reverses COL resistance in via a checkerboard assay.

Fall is common in the elderly, and chronic kidney disease is considered a major risk factor. Serum creatinine (Cre) and cystatin C (Cys C) are commonly used biomarkers for renal function, while the ratio of Cre to Cys C, known as the sarcopenia index (SI), provides insights into muscle health. This study investigates the relationships between Cre, Cys C, estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFR), SI, and self-reported falls using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data.

Objective: Carotid atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease, which is a major cause of ischemic stroke. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between carotid atherosclerosis and novel inflammatory markers, including platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR), platelet to neutrophil ratio (PNR), neutrophil to lymphocyte platelet ratio (NLPR), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), systemic inflammation response index (SIRI), and aggregate index of systemic inflammation (AISI), in order to find the best inflammatory predictor of carotid atherosclerosis.

Method: We included 10015 patients who underwent routine physical examinations at the physical examination center of our hospital from January 2016 to December 2019, among whom 1910 were diagnosed with carotid atherosclerosis.

Uranium (U) is a well-known nephrotoxicant which forms precipitates in the lysosomes of renal proximal tubular epithelial cells (PTECs) after U-exposure at a cytotoxic dose. However, the roles of lysosomes in U decorporation and detoxification remain to be elucidated. Mucolipin transient receptor potential channel 1 (TRPML1) is a major lysosomal Ca channel regulating lysosomal exocytosis.

Aims: Sustained visceral hypersensitivity is a hallmark of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) could be partially explained by enteric neural remodeling. Particularly, synaptic plasticity in the enteric nervous system, a form of enteric "memory", has been speculated as a participant in the pain maintenance in IBS. This study aimed to elucidate the role of ephrinB2/ephB2 in enteric synaptic plasticity and visceral pain in IBS.

Arterial aging is characterized by decreased vascular function, caused by arterial stiffness (AS), and vascular morphological changes, caused by arterial dilatation. We analyzed the relationship of pre-AS and AS, as assessed by cardio ankle vascular index (CAVI), with arterial diameters (AD) at nine levels, from the aortic sinus to the abdominal aorta, as measured by artificial intelligence (AI) on non-enhanced chest computed tomography (CT) images. Overall, 801 patients who underwent both chest CT scan and arterial elasticity test were enrolled.

  • AI can indirectly assess aortic dilation from CT images, which relates to blood pressure, potentially aiding in diagnosing conditions like masked hypertension.
  • The study involved 801 patients and used AI-Rad Companion to automatically measure aortic diameter at specific locations, validated by regulatory bodies like the FDA.
  • Results indicated that aortic diameter is a significant risk factor for adverse blood pressure conditions, with the mid descending aorta position being the most effective for hypertension identification and screening.

The catalytic performance of the selective isomerization of -ethyltoluene (O-ET) is crucial to increasing the -ethyltoluene (M-ET) and -ethyltoluene (P-ET) yields. During the isomerization of O-ET, traditional (commercial) mordenites (HM) are generally limited by a high reaction temperature (235 °C), as well as a low yield of the isomerization product (49.0%).
