This paper reviews the influence of land use changes on the soil organic carbon sink to determine whether the Chinese "Grain-for-Green" (conversion of farmland to forestland) project increased the rate of SOC content during its implementation between 1999 and 2010 in the hilly and gully areas of the Loess Plateau in north-central China. Taking two-year-old Periploca sepium seedlings as test materials, an experiment with controlled soil water contents was conducted to study the effects of repeated drying and re-watering on the leaf photosynthetic characteristics and the lipid peroxidation and antioxidant system in young leaves, mature leaves, old leaves, new stems, and fine roots. The seedlings were subjected to three cycles of drying and re-watering, with regular irrigation to maintain the soil water content at around 80% of field capacity as the control (CK). Under drying, the leaf relative water content (RWC) and net photosynthesis rate (Pn) decreased significantly, while the leaf photosynthetic pigments content increased.

This study investigated the role of the protein kinase MEK1/2 in the regulation of ascorbate and glutathione content by jasmonic acid in Agropyron cristatum leaves. The results showed that JA induced increases in the transcript levels and activities of APX, GR, MDHAR, DHAR, GalLDH and γ-ECS, the contents of AsA, GSH, total ascorbate and total glutathione, and the ratios of AsA/DHA and GSH/GSSG, and reduced the E(GSSG/2GSH). The increases, except for the transcript level and activity of γ-ECS and the reduction in E(GSSG/2GSH,) were all suppressed by pre-treatment with the MEK1/2 inhibitors PD98059 and U0126.

The water consumption characteristics and water use efficiency (WUE) of poplar (Populus simonii) were investigated under the condition of three different soil water regimes, which were 70%, 55% and 40% of field capacity (FC), respectively. The results showed that water potential, water content, photosynthetic rate, WUE of leaves, and plant growth rate decreased significantly with reduction in soil water content. At the level of adequate and medium soil water content, rapid growth and biomass accumulation in poplar occurred during May and June, whereas this phenomenon occurred only during May under severe soil drought condition.

This paper deals with the relationships between water and productivity of seabuckthorn in different habitats of the Loess Plateau in north Shaanxi. The typical habitats were classified with hilltop, sunny, shady, semi-shady and semi-sunny hillside. The results showed that values of transpiration of five kinds of habitats were different, and transpiration of semi-shady was relatively stronger in the morning while others were weaker.
