This paper presents a novel adaptive crack-tip extended isogeometric analysis (adaptive CT XIGA) framework based on locally refined B-splines (LR B-splines) for efficient and accurate fracture modeling in two-dimensional solids. The XIGA method facilitates crack modeling without requiring the specific locations of crack faces and enables crack propagation simulation without remeshing by employing localized enrichment functions. LR B-splines, as an advanced extension of B-splines and NURBS, offer high-order continuity, precise geometric representation, and local refinement capabilities, thereby enhancing computational accuracy and efficiency.

Background: Mortality from familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) remains high due to late diagnosis, and the rate of timely diagnosis remains low (< 10% globally and < 1% in China). Early screening and treatment could significantly reduce mortality risk, especially among young adults. This study aims to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of universal genetic screening of young adults aged 18-40 years compared to universal cholesterol screening or current passive screening strategies (opportunistic cholesterol screening and genetic cascade testing) for FH in China.

  • Phaeocystis globosa is a type of marine phytoplankton that can create harmful blooms, particularly in temperate and tropical waters, with some locations experiencing "giant" colonies whose growth factors are not fully understood.
  • Measurements during a "giant" bloom revealed that while photosynthetic capacity was consistent across different colony sizes, mid-sized colonies exhibited the highest rates of photosynthesis, suggesting complex relationships between colony size and growth.
  • Nitrogen uptake varied between nitrate and ammonium, with higher affinity for ammonium, yet all colony sizes displayed similar rates of nutrient uptake in low-light conditions, indicating that further research is needed to understand the ecological impact of these giant colonies.

Research on mathematical cognition, learning, and instruction (MCLI) often takes cognition as its point of departure and considers instruction at a later point in the research cycle. In this article, we call for psychologists who study MCLI to reflect on the "status quo" of their research practices and to consider making instruction an earlier and more central aspect of their work. We encourage scholars of MCLI (a) to consider the needs of educators and schools when selecting research questions and developing interventions; (b) to compose research teams that are diverse in the personal, disciplinary, and occupational backgrounds of team members; (c) to make efforts to broaden participation in research and to conduct research in authentic settings; and (d) to communicate research in ways that are accessible to practitioners and to the general public.
