A selective 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) 2A receptor antagonist sarpogrelate (SG) blocks serotonin-induced platelet aggregation. It has been used clinically for the treatment of peripheral arterial disease. SG might be able to improve chronic ischemia, which contributes to renal fibrosis progression by maintaining renal microcirculation.

This study is aimed at exploring a new mechanism of action by statins on renal fibrosis, a hallmark of CKD, using mouse renal fibrosis model in vivo and Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells expressing USAG-1 in vitro. C57/BL6 mice fed a 0.

Design: Experimental animal models and a clinical, prospective observational study.
Setting: University laboratory and tertiary hospital.
Application of nanotechnology to medical biology has brought remarkable success. Water-soluble fullerenes are molecules with great potential for biological use because they can endow unique characteristics of amphipathic property and form a self-assembled structure by chemical modification. Effective gene delivery in vitro with tetra(piperazino)fullerene epoxide (TPFE) and its superiority to Lipofectin have been described in a previous report.

C57BL/6 mice fed excess dietary adenine for 6 weeks showed a gradual increase in levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN). They also showed severe tubulointerstitial pathological findings, such as fibrosis and macrophage infiltration without glomerular damage, which were attenuated by treatment with either allopurinol or Y-700, a new xanthine dehydroxygenase inhibitor.

Different degrees of AKI severity were induced by several renal insults (CP dose and ischemia time) in human L-FABP transgenic mice. Renal histological injury scores increased with both CP dose and ischemic time.
