Magnesium and its alloys represent promising candidates for biomedical implants due to their biodegradability and mechanical properties, which are similar to natural bone. However, their rapid degradation process characterized by dynamic pH fluctuations and significant hydrogen gas evolution during biocorrosion adversely affects both in vitro and in vivo assessments. While the ISO 10993-5 and 12 standards provide guidelines for evaluating the in vitro biocompatibility of biodegradable materials, they also introduce testing variability conditions that yield inconsistent results.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the connection between Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and salivary gland tumors, which remains unclear in existing literature.
  • The research involved 66 salivary gland lesions, using fine needle aspiration cytology to detect HPV-DNA, resulting in HPV found in two cysts and three metastatic carcinomas, but none in primary tumors.
  • Ultimately, the study concluded that HPV did not play a role in primary salivary gland tumors, but its presence in intraglandular cysts suggests a new area for further investigation.*

Background: Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys are promising candidates for biodegradable materials in next-generation bone implants due to their favourable mechanical properties and biodegradability. However, their rapid degradation and corrosion, potentially leading to toxic byproducts, pose significant challenges for widespread use.

Objectives: This study aimed to address the challenges associated with Mg-based materials by thoroughly evaluating the biocompatibility, genotoxicity, and mechanical properties of Mg-based devices manufactured via Single Point Incremental Forming (SPIF).

A majority of patients with heart failure (HF) do not receive adequate medical therapy as recommended by clinical guidelines. One major obstacle encountered by population health management (PHM) programs to improve medication usage is the substantial burden placed on clinical staff who must manually sift through electronic health records (EHRs) to ascertain patients' eligibility for the guidelines. As a potential solution, the study team developed a rule-based system (RBS) that automatically parses the EHR for identifying patients with HF who may be eligible for guideline-directed therapy.

Axillary lymph node (ALN) staging is crucial for the management of invasive breast cancer (BC). Although various radiological investigations are available, ultrasound (US) is the preferred tool for evaluating ALNs. Despite its immediacy, widespread use, and good predictive value, US is limited by intra- and inter-operator variability.

Article Synopsis
  • - A 37-year-old woman with a balanced reciprocal translocation was found to have a high-risk non-invasive prenatal screening test indicating potential chromosome 18 abnormalities during her 13th week of pregnancy.
  • - Advanced techniques including cytogenetic analysis, FISH, and SNP-array were used to analyze her amniotic cells, revealing duplications on chromosome 18 and chromosome 9, suggesting aneuploidies.
  • - The study emphasizes the importance of using a combination of NIPT and detailed cytogenetic approaches to accurately detect and confirm chromosomal anomalies in high-risk pregnancies.

  • Integrated behavioral health programs, like the PHLOW Program, help reduce costs and improve patient outcomes, but funding challenges hinder their widespread adoption.
  • The PHLOW Program uses a collaborative care model to provide accessible psychiatric care through primary care providers, demonstrating effective patient outcomes through brief episodes of care.
  • Results show reductions in anxiety and depression, lower mental health claims, and increased financial support, suggesting a viable model for other organizations to implement similar integrated behavioral health programs.

: Magnesium alloys degrade rapidly in salt solutions, which limits their use without passivating treatments. AZ31 alloy is particularly promising for implant applications owing to its biodegradability and mechanical properties, necessitating effective corrosion-resistant coatings. : In this study, a self-passivating reactive coating was designed and evaluated for AZ31 magnesium alloy plates using β-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) to enhance corrosion resistance and biocompatibility.

Sensitivity to freezing remains a critical issue in stallion semen cryopreservation procedures. To explore this topic in-depth, semen was collected from ten stallions, diluted with three different extenders, transported to the laboratory, and then centrifuged and frozen with four different extenders. We conducted analyses of sperm kinetics, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and hydrogen peroxide content both before and after freezing.

Histopathological features of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) induced by diethylnitrosamine (DEN) in mice display strong similarities with those seen in humans, including the higher tumor prevalence in males than in females. Previous studies have demonstrated that continual production of the pro-inflammatory IL-6 by Kupffer cells is involved in the initiation and progression of DEN-induced HCC and that estrogen-mediated reduction of IL-6 secretion would decrease its incidence in females. Given the predominant utilization of male mice in hepatic carcinogenesis research, the objective of this study was to examine histopathological and immunological parameters in the DEN-induced liver carcinogenesis model in female C3H mice.

Clinical depression is characterized by multiple concurrent symptoms, manifesting as a complex heterogeneous condition. Although some well-established classical behavioral assessments are widespread in rodent models, it remains uncertain whether rats also display stress-induced depression-related phenotypes in a multidimensional manner, i.e.

Malignancies of the parotid gland are relatively uncommon and in most cases are primary neoplasms; intraparotid metastases are rare. Oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (O- and OP-SCC) can potentially metastasize to the parotid gland or intraparotid lymph nodes. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) serves as the initial diagnostic approach for this purpose.

  • Brain disturbances during development, particularly from early-life seizures, can lead to lasting effects like neurodevelopmental disorders and cognitive impairments.
  • The hippocampus-prefrontal cortex (HPC-PFC) circuit might play a key role in these complications, with distinct dysfunctions linked to behavioral changes in adulthood.
  • In male rats exposed to early-life seizures, researchers found significant working memory issues and sensorimotor disturbances, linked to increased neuroinflammation and altered brain connectivity, even without neuron loss.

Background: Several SGLT2i (sodium-glucose transport protein 2 inhibitors) and GLP1-RA (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists) reduce cardiovascular events and improve kidney outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes; however, utilization remains low despite guideline recommendations.

Methods: A randomized, remote implementation trial in the Mass General Brigham network enrolled patients with type 2 diabetes with increased cardiovascular or kidney risk. Patients eligible for, but not prescribed, SGLT2i or GLP1-RA were randomly assigned to simultaneous virtual patient education with concurrent prescription of SGLT2i or GLP1-RA (ie, Simultaneous) or 2 months of virtual education followed by medication prescription (ie, Education-First) delivered by a multidisciplinary team driven by nonlicensed navigators and clinical pharmacists who prescribed SGLT2i or GLP1-RA using a standardized treatment algorithm.

The recent introduction of the innovative therapy, onasemnogene abeparvovec (Zolgensma), has revolutionized the spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) therapeutic landscape. Although Zolgensma therapy has proven to lead to functional improvements in SMA children, some gaps in its safety profile still need to be investigated. To better characterize the Zolgensma safety profile, we conducted a retrospective observational study, analyzing all the Individual Case Safety Reports (ICSRs) referred to it and collected in the European pharmacovigilance database between 1 January 2019 and 22 September 2023.

: Breast localization plays a key role in early breast cancer (BC) surgery. The current gold standard is wire-guided localization (WGL), despite the known disadvantages. The patients often experience anxiety and discomfort due the metallic wire placed in the breast, and surgeons are compelled to perform the surgery on the same day as the radiological release of the wire to prevent migrations or breakages.
