In the present study, a diagnostic approach was used to analyze the wall painting in the apse of the Sotterra church at Paola, in the province of Cosenza, Italy. The Sotterra church is nowadays located 6 m under the ground level. The presbytery area houses valuable pictorial evidence attributable to different phases.

The site is an underground church (hence the name of Sotterra, which means "under the earth") rediscovered in the second half of the 19th century, during the building works of the church on the same area. This underground church preserves valuable mural paintings having different styles.

Regarding the mechanical characterization, the uniaxial compressive strength and flexural strength were measured. The composition of the materials was explored by differential thermal/thermogravimetric analysis (DTA-TG), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRPD), and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) coupled with EDS microanalysis.

CVA is characterized by erythema and edema on the vaccination site (usually deltoid area) that appears from 5 to 10 days after vaccination and is sometimes associated with itching or pain. The exact etiology of CVA is still unclear, but delayed hypersensitivity against an excipient seems to play an essential role in the pathogenesis of the disease.

Often these kinds of artworks are in outdoor environments, and they usually suffer from atmospheric weathering and anthropic vandalism. Recently, several strategies have been used to limit or remove the effects of such vandalism.

It was an observational, retro-prospective cohort study conducted in 17 Italian dermatology clinics. Adult patients with moderate-severe plaque psoriasis, who started a biologic treatment between 24 weeks and 24 months before enrolment, were included.

Since its discovery in 1968, some scholars have considered it a unique example of the lost tradition of Greek painting, others have emphasized Etruscan or Italic parallels. More recently, a possible local production has been suggested.

This monument is undoubtedly one of the main touristic attractions of Rome. During the restoration held between 2014 and 2015, some diagnostic analyses had been carried out.

In this work, we combined in situ non-destructive techniques, ultrasonic tomography (US), ultraviolet-induced visible fluorescence (UV-IF) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to study the bass-relief 'Madonna con Bambino' (Gorizia, Italy). The US revealed the presence of some metallic pivots, associated with areas of high sound velocity; moreover, a more degraded area has been identified in the lower part of the bass-relief.

In the present work, two kinds of hybrid polymeric-inorganic coatings containing TiO or SiO particles and prepared starting from two commercial resins (Alpha®SI30 and Bluesil®BP9710) were developed and applied to two kinds of mortars (an air-hardening calcic lime mortar [ALM] and a natural hydraulic lime mortar [HLM]) to achieve better performances in terms of water repellence and consequently damage resistance. The two pure commercial resins were also applied for comparison purposes. Properties of the coated materials and their performance were studied using different techniques such as contact angle measurements, capillary absorption test, mercury intrusion porosimetry, surface free energy, colorimetric measurements and water vapour permeability tests.

In order to avoid both natural and artificial stone decay, mainly due to the interaction with atmospheric pollutants (both gases such as NOx and SO2 and particulate matter), polymeric materials have been widely studied as protective coatings enable to limit the penetration of fluids into the bulk material. In the current work, an air hardening calcic lime mortar (ALM) and a natural hydraulic lime mortar (HLM) were used as substrates, and commercially available Si-based resins (Alpha®SI30 and Silres®BS16) were adopted as protective agents to give hydrophobicity features to the artificial stones. Surface properties of coatings and their performance as hydrophobic agents were studied using different techniques such as contact angle measurements, capillary absorption test, mercury intrusion porosimetry, surface free energy, colorimetric measurements and water vapour permeability tests.

It suffers, like most of the historical buildings located in urban environments, from several degradation phenomena related to the high pollution level. Undoubtedly, the formation of black crusts plays a crucial role in the decay of the stone materials belonging to the church.

Objective: This pilot study assessed the feasibility and validity of a new 16-item tool developed to assess patients' perspectives of interns' communication skills and professionalism and the team's communication.
Methods: Feasibility was determined by the percentage of surveys completed, the average time for survey completion, the percentage of target interns evaluated, and the mean number of evaluations per intern.

Black crusts are recognized to have been, up to now, one of the major deterioration forms affecting the built heritage in urban areas. Their formation is demonstrated to occur mainly on carbonate building materials, whose interaction with an SO2-loaded atmosphere leads to the transformation of calcium carbonate (calcite) into calcium sulfate dihydrate (gypsum) which, together with embedded carbonaceous particles, consequently forms the black crusts on the stone surface. An analytical study was carried out on black crust samples collected from limestone monumental buildings and churches belonging to the European built Heritage, i.

Methods: This new approach was tested on black crusts developing on two marble substrates, one, the columns of the San Cosimato cloister in Rome, and the other, a sculpture representing an angel, located in Pessano con Bornago, a small industrial town near Milan.
Discussion: The main aim of this study was to develop and test the reliability of the LA-ICP-MS analytical method on black crusts and to explore the idea that trace element concentrations in black crusts can be applied to investigate their origin and the relations between concentrations of polluting elements in black crusts and environmental conditions.
Although protein-tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP-1B) is a negative regulator of insulin action, adipose tissue from PTP-1B-/- mice does not show enhanced insulin-stimulated insulin receptor phosphorylation. Investigation of glucose uptake in isolated adipocytes revealed that the adipocytes from PTP-1B-/- mice have a significantly attenuated insulin response as compared with PTP-1B+/+ adipocytes. This insulin resistance manifests in PTP-1B-/- animals older than 16 weeks of age and could be partially rescued by adenoviral expression of PTP-1B in null adipocytes.

Here, we have initiated these steps in isolated mitochondria derived from control and BCL-2-overexpressing cells using synthetic BH3 peptides and subsequently analyzed the BCL members by chemical cross-linking. The results show that the BH3 domain of BID interacts with and induces an "open" conformation of BAK, exposing the BAK N terminus.

In the absence of an apoptotic signal, BAX adopts a conformation that constrains the protein from integrating into mitochondrial membranes. Here, we show that caspases, including caspase-8, can initiate BAX insertion into mitochondria in vivo and in vitro. The cleavage product of caspase-8, tBID, induced insertion of BAX into mitochondria in vivo, and reconstitution in vitro showed that tBID, either directly or indirectly, relieved inhibition of the BAX transmembrane signal-anchor by the NH2-terminal domain, resulting in integration of BAX into mitochondrial membrane.

The predominant site of caspase-mediated proteolysis is within the cytoplasmic tail of APP, and cleavage at this site occurs in hippocampal neurons in vivo following acute excitotoxic or ischemic brain injury. Caspase-3 is the predominant caspase involved in APP cleavage, consistent with its marked elevation in dying neurons of Alzheimer's disease brains and colocalization of its APP cleavage product with A beta in senile plaques.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFocal adhesion kinase (Fak) is a non-receptor protein-tyrosine kinase that stimulates cell spreading and motility by promoting the formation of contact sites between the cell and the extracellular matrix (focal adhesions). It suppresses apoptosis by transducing survival signals that emanate from focal adhesions via the clustering of transmembrane integrins by components of the extracellular matrix. We demonstrate that Fak is cleaved by caspases at two distinct sites during apoptosis.

There was a marked increase in admissions and a greater incidence among middle-aged subjects and males. The percent frequency differences between urban and montane districts noted in the fifties were less apparent later in the last three-year period.
