Incidence of childhood cancers in the North East geopolitical zone of Nigeria.

Introduction: Cancers are a major cause of childhood mortality worldwide especially in LMICs where underdiagnoses and lack of quality cancer data hampers effective cancer control efforts. This study aimed to document and describe the patterns and characteristics of childhood cancers in the North East geopolitical zone of Nigeria.

Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study that collected cancer data from 4 out of the 6 states in the North East of Nigeria.

Emerging cancer disease burden in a rural sub-Saharan African population: northeast Nigeria in focus.

Introduction: Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is plagued by myriads of diseases, mostly infectious; but cancer disease burden is rising among non-communicable diseases. Nigeria has a high burden of cancer, however its remote underserved culturally-conserved populations have been understudied, a gap this study sought to fill.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional multi-institutional descriptive study of histologically diagnosed cancers over a four-year period (January 2019-December 2022) archived in the Departments of Pathology and Cancer Registries of six tertiary hospitals in the northeast of Nigeria.

MEDICAL OUTREACH AND IMPROVED ACCESS TO SPECIALIST SERVICES FOR THE RURAL COMMUNITY OF BAUCHI STATE, NIGERIA: THE REQUIREMENTS FOR SUSTAINABILITY.

Introduction: The West African College of Physicians (Nigeria) conducted its Annual General and Scientific Meeting (AGSM) in Bauchi State, Nigeria on 11th-15th of July, 2023. The theme of the AGM is HEALTH-RELATED SDGs IN NIGERIA: THE PROGRESS SO FAR. The sub- themes included challenges of health care in the face of Disaster and the menace of brain drain on health care manpower and medical education.

KNOWLEDGE ON THE USE OF BIOSIMILARS IN HAEMATOLOGICAL MALIGNANCIES AMONGST HEALTHCARE WORKERS AT A TERTIARY HOSPITAL IN NORTHEAST NIGERIA.

Introduction: Haematological malignancies like other cancers are on the rise. With the improved understanding of the biology of cancers, various biological molecules (biologics and biosimilars) are being discovered and used as supportive and/or specific treatment options. These novel treatments have revolutionized the care of cancer patients and significantly improved survival.

CORRELATION BETWEEN SERUM ALBUMIN LEVEL AND PACKED CELL VOLUME IN NEWLY DIAGNOSED PATIENTS WITH PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS IN A TERTIARY HOSPITAL IN BAUCHI, NORTH-EASTERN, NIGERIA.

Introduction: Though some studies showed biochemical and haematologic derangements in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), but information with regards to the correlation between serum albumin and packed cell volume (PCV) is scarce. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between serum albumin level and PCV in newly diagnosed patients with PTB at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, Northeastern Nigeria.

Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study of consecutive newly diagnosed patients with PTB who were Sputum smear-positive as determined by Gene Expert/Rif MTB machine and HIV-negative by 'Determine' test, that were recruited from the medical outpatient department (MOPD) and directly observed treatment short course (DOTS) clinic of ATBUTH, Bauchi.
