The analysis of circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) through minimally invasive liquid biopsies is promising for early multi-cancer detection and monitoring minimal residual disease. Most existing methods focus on targeted deep sequencing, but few integrate multiple data modalities. Here, we develop a methodology for ctDNA detection using deep (80x) whole-genome TET-Assisted Pyridine Borane Sequencing (TAPS), a less destructive approach than bisulphite sequencing, which permits the simultaneous analysis of genomic and methylomic data.

Improved Analysis for Intrinsic Properties of Triaxial Accelerometers to Reduce Calibration Uncertainty.

We describe a modification of a previously described measurement-analysis protocol to determine the intrinsic properties of triaxial accelerometers by using a measurement protocol based on angular stepwise rotation in the Earth's gravitational field. This study was conducted with MEMS triaxial accelerometers that were co-integrated in four consumer-grade wireless microsensors. The measurements were carried out on low-cost rotation tables in different laboratories in different countries to simulate the reproducibility environment encountered in inter-comparisons of calibration capabilities.

Screening for Depression Using Natural Language Processing: Literature Review.

Background: Depression is a prevalent global mental health disorder with substantial individual and societal impact. Natural language processing (NLP), a branch of artificial intelligence, offers the potential for improving depression screening by extracting meaningful information from textual data, but there are challenges and ethical considerations.

Objective: This literature review aims to explore existing NLP methods for detecting depression, discuss successes and limitations, address ethical concerns, and highlight potential biases.

Target engagement of the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex with transcranial temporal interference stimulation in major depressive disorder: a protocol for a randomized sham-controlled trial.

Background: Transcranial temporal interference stimulation (tTIS) is a new, emerging neurostimulation technology that utilizes two or more electric fields at specific frequencies to modulate the oscillations of neurons at a desired spatial location in the brain. The physics of tTIS offers the advantage of modulating deep brain structures in a non-invasive fashion and with minimal stimulation of the overlying cortex outside of a selected target. As such, tTIS can be effectively employed in the context of therapeutics for the psychiatric disease of disrupted brain connectivity, such as major depressive disorder (MDD).

Acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura in a patient with plasmodium vivax malaria: A case report.

Acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare life-threatening disorder characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, severe thrombocytopenia, and organ damage. We present the case of a 71-year-old man initially diagnosed with malaria-like symptoms and displaying markers of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, severe thrombocytopenia, renal injury, and neurological impairment. Despite antimalarial treatment, acquired TTP was suspected.

Predicting treatment response to ketamine in treatment-resistant depression using auditory mismatch negativity: Study protocol.

Background: Ketamine has recently attracted considerable attention for its rapid effects on patients with major depressive disorder, including treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Despite ketamine's promising results in treating depression, a significant number of patients do not respond to the treatment, and predicting who will benefit remains a challenge. Although its antidepressant effects are known to be linked to its action as an antagonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, the precise mechanisms that determine why some patients respond and others do not are still unclear.

Subacromial balloon spacer improves isokinetic performance in patients with massive irreparable rotator cuff tear.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyse clinical, functional and shoulder kinematics results using subacromial balloon spacer in nonreparable massive rotator cuff tears. Subacromial balloon spacer was hypothesised to improve shoulder kinematics and increases clinical and functional outcomes scores in nonreparable massive rotator cuff tears.

Methods: This is a prospective study in massive rotator cuff tears.

Cutaneous tuberculosis, different clinical spectrum of the same disease: the importance of pre-test probability.

This report presents three cases of cutaneous tuberculosis that were identified at the Calderon Hospital in Quito, Ecuador. The first case involved a 44-year-old man who had tuberculosis verrucosa cutis, characterized by circinate erythematous areas, ulcerated nodules, and verruciform plaques extending from the right lower limb to the hip. In the second case a 50-year-old woman with a 1-year history of pruritic dermatosis in the left ciliary area was diagnosed with lupus vulgaris.

Resident-as-Teacher: Can It Be Done With an E-Learning Module?

Resident-as-teacher initiatives are traditionally specialty-specific and performed in-person, limiting ability to disseminate essential teaching skills to all residents. The aim of this study was to develop, implement, and evaluate a resident-as-teacher interactive e-learning module on growth mindset and coaching. The module was designed and implemented between August 2022 and March 2023.

Digital Interventions to Understand and Mitigate Stress Response: Protocol for Process and Content Evaluation of a Cohort Study.

Background: Staffing and resource shortages, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, have increased stress levels among health care workers. Many health care workers have reported feeling unable to maintain the quality of care expected within their profession, which, at times, may lead to moral distress and moral injury. Currently, interventions for moral distress and moral injury are limited.

Increasing Annual Cancer Incidence in Patients Age 20-49 Years: A Real-Data Study.

Purpose: Data from population-based studies have shown an increased incidence of certain types of neoplasms in patients younger than 50 years (early-onset cancer [EOC]); however, little information is derived from other real-world data sources. In a nonpopulation registry, we analyzed changes in the incidence of several neoplasms in successive generations.

Methods: This cross-sectional study included all patients with a cancer diagnosis registered in one university hospital in Málaga, Spain, between 1998 and 2021, and 18 neoplasms were analyzed.

Low Frequency of Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding Despite Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs and Corticosteroids in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease. It has been identified that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and corticosteroids can be essential risk factors for developing complications such as upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB).

Objective: This study aimed to describe the safety profile of drugs used to treat RA focused in UGIB.

Digital Interventions for Stress Among Frontline Health Care Workers: Results From a Pilot Feasibility Cohort Trial.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged the mental health of health care workers, increasing the rates of stress, moral distress (MD), and moral injury (MI). Virtual reality (VR) is a useful tool for studying MD and MI because it can effectively elicit psychophysiological responses, is customizable, and permits the controlled study of participants in real time.

Objective: This study aims to investigate the feasibility of using an intervention comprising a VR scenario and an educational video to examine MD among health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic and to use our mobile app for longitudinal monitoring of stress, MD, and MI after the intervention.

Amygdala biomarkers of treatment response in major depressive disorder: An fMRI systematic review of SSRI antidepressants.

Functional neuroimaging studies have demonstrated abnormal activity and functional connectivity (FC) of the amygdala among individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD), which may be rectified with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) treatment. This systematic review aimed to identify changes in the amygdala on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans among individuals with MDD who received SSRIs. A search for fMRI studies examining amygdala correlates of SSRI response via fMRI was conducted through OVID (MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Embase).

Digital Interventions to Reduce Distress Among Frontline Health Care Providers: Analysis of Self-Perceived Stress.

Due to the constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers have reported behaving in ways that are contrary to their values, which may result in distress and injury. This work is the first of its kind to evaluate the presence of stress in the COVID-19 VR Healthcare Simulation for Distress dataset. The dataset collected passive physiological signals and active mental health questionnaires.

A naturally occurring G11S mutation in the 3C-like protease from the SARS-CoV-2 virus dramatically weakens the dimer interface.

The 3C-like protease (3CL ) is crucial to the replication of SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19, and is the target of several successful drugs including Paxlovid and Xocova. Nevertheless, the emergence of viral resistance underlines the need for alternative drug strategies. 3CL only functions as a homodimer, making the protein-protein interface an attractive drug target.

Cross-cultural effects of reminiscence therapy on life satisfaction and autobiographical memory of older adults: a pilot study across Mexico and Spain.

Background: There are increasing reports on the cognitive and emotional benefits of positive reminiscence therapy in older people. The objective of this study is to assess the differential improvement of the quality of life for older people in different vital situations (three different types of aging) and from different countries by implementing a positive reminiscence therapy program (REMPOS).

Methods: The participants were 144 older adults above the age of 65, 77 participants from Spain (45 experimental groups, 32 control groups) and 67 from Mexico (34 experimental groups, 33 control groups).

Dapagliflozin Improved Cardiac Function and Structure in Diabetic Patients with Preserved Ejection Fraction: Results of a Single Centre, Observational Prospective Study.

Sodium-glucose cotransporter inhibitors (SGLT2i) have demonstrated a reduction in cardiovascular events in diabetes and heart failure (HF). The mechanisms underlying this benefit are not well known and data are contradictory. The purpose of this study is to analyse the effect of dapagliflozin on cardiac structure and function in patients with normal ejection fraction.

VEIN STEP: A Prospective, Observational, International Study to Assess Effectiveness of Conservative Treatments in Chronic Venous Disease.

Introduction: VEIN STEP was conducted to collect international data on the management of chronic venous disease (CVD) and to assess the effectiveness of conservative treatments for the relief of CVD signs and symptoms.

Methods: This international, observational, prospective, longitudinal, cohort study recruited adult outpatients consulting for symptomatic CVD. The primary objective was the effectiveness of conservative treatments on symptoms, signs and quality of life in a real-life setting assessed using a range of patient-reported outcome measures: 10-cm Visual Analog and Patient Global Impression of Change scales for symptoms; Venous Clinical Severity Score for physician assessment of signs; and 14-item ChronIc Venous Insufficiency Questionnaire (CIVIQ-14) for quality of life.

Histology and histochemistry of the accessory gland of the female reproductive tract of Rhodnius neglectus Lent, 1954 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae).

Rhodnius neglectus is a wild triatomine, vector of the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, which causes Chagas' disease, and feeds on the blood of small mammals, being essential for its growth and reproduction. Accessory glands of the female reproductive tract are important in insect reproduction, but their anatomy and histology in R. neglectus are poorly studied.

Resident Education and Virtual Medicine: A Faculty Development Session to Enhance Trainee Skills in the Realm of Telemedicine.

Introduction: COVID-19 accelerated the use of telemedicine. Subsequently, clinical sites began conducting virtual visits. Academic institutions implemented telemedicine for patient care and simultaneously had to teach residents the logistics and best practices.
