Background: A crucial aspect of contemporary dental implant research is modifying implant microdesign to achieve early and robust osseointegration. This study describes a new facile subtraction approach for microdesign modification of titanium implants using akali-hydrothermal followed by ion-exchange reaction (AHIE) in a salt solution, and compares osseointegration performance to machined titanium alloy (negative control) implants.
Methods: The morphology, wettability, and roughness of the implant surfaces were evaluated.

Vaccines play a critical role in the prevention of life-threatening infectious disease. However, the development of effective vaccines against many immune-evading pathogens such as HIV has proven challenging, and existing vaccines against some diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria have limited efficacy. The historically slow rate of vaccine development and limited pan-variant immune responses also limit existing vaccine utility against rapidly emerging and mutating pathogens such as influenza and SARS-CoV-2.

The increasing aspect ratio of NWs results in an increase in the surface area, which, in turn, enhances the material collection. The group III adatom diffusion from the NW sidewalls to the top sustains a superlinear growth regime.

Atrial TREM2 macrophages secrete osteopontin (encoded by ), a matricellular signaling protein that engenders fibrosis and AFib. Here we show that silencing in TREM2 cardiac macrophages with an antibody-siRNA conjugate reduces atrial fibrosis and suppresses AFib in mice, thus offering a new immunotherapy for the most common arrhythmia.

Selective area epitaxy enables the direct integration of Ge nanowires on a silicon chip while controlling the device design, density, and scalability. For this to become a reality, it is essential to understand and control the initial stages of the epitaxy process.

Bottom-up large-scale manufacturing of these nanostructures by selective area epitaxy (SAE) relies on precise nanopatterning of various shapes on the growth masks. Electron beam lithography offers an extraordinary accuracy suited for the purpose.

Here, we investigate the growth mechanisms of GaAs nanoridges on GaAs (100) substrates in selective area trenches by metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy (MOVPE). It is found that pre-growth annealing results in the formation of valley-like structures of GaAs with atomic terraces inside the trenches.

Yet, empirical data on their occurrence in the deep-ocean is scarce. Estimates of the deep-ocean POP sink are therefore uncertain.

Sangu and Matamuhuri are two major rivers of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT's) and main sources of upland freshwater inflows to the south-eastern part of Bangladesh. This study was performed to evaluate the streamflow characteristics of Sangu-Matamuhuri watershed based on 25 years historical observed streamflow and rainfall records.

Herein, low molecular weight polyethylenimine (PEI) was functionalized with saponin residues using phenylboronic acid (PBA) as an ATP-responsive cross-linker, and a fluorinated side chain to construct PEI-PBA-SAP-F polycation as a highly efficient delivery vector. This vehicle could transfect small plasmid DNA (∼3 kb) with outstanding efficiency into various cells, including HEK 293T, NIH3T3, A549, PC12, MCF7 and HT-29, as well as robust transfection of a large plasmid (∼9 kb) into HEK 293T cells.

Migrated fluid signatures can be recognized using stable carbon isotope and PVT compositional data from produced samples representative of in-situ petroleum fluids. Such samples, however, are seldom collected due to operational complexity and high cost.

On top of the large spin-orbit coupling that allows fast qubit operation, nanowire geometry and orientation can be tuned to cancel out charge noise and hyperfine interaction. Here, we demonstrate a scalable approach to synthesize and organize Ge nanowires on silicon (100)-oriented substrates.

A low dose of IL-2 has shown encouraging clinical benefits in SLE patients; however, its clinical utility is limited because of the requirement of daily injections and the observation of increase in proinflammatory cytokines and in non-Tregs. We recently showed that a fusion protein of mouse IL-2 and mouse IL-2Rα (CD25), joined by a noncleavable linker, was effective in treating diabetes in NOD mice by selectively inducing Treg expansion.

Fast linear transforms are ubiquitous in machine learning, including the discrete Fourier transform, discrete cosine transform, and other structured transformations such as convolutions. All of these transforms can be represented by dense matrix-vector multiplication, yet each has a specialized and highly efficient (subquadratic) algorithm. We ask to what extent hand-crafting these algorithms and implementations is necessary, what structural priors they encode, and how much knowledge is required to automatically learn a fast algorithm for a provided structured transform.

The structures consist of elongated PhC cavities in which the effective index of refraction is varied quasi-linearly along their axis, implemented by systematic lateral shifts of the PhC holes. The confined modes have approximately Airy-function envelopes, exhibiting single peaks and extended tails, which is useful for optimizing single photon extraction and transmission in integrated quantum photonic devices.

The low displacement rank (LDR) framework for structured matrices represents a matrix through two displacement operators and a low-rank residual. Existing use of LDR matrices in deep learning has applied fixed displacement operators encoding forms of shift invariance akin to convolutions. We introduce a rich class of LDR matrices with more general displacement operators, and explicitly learn over both the operators and the low-rank component.

The suppression is caused by the Purcell enhancement of the QD-exciton recombination rate, which alters the rate of charging of the solid-state environment by the QD itself. The effect can be used to spectrally-stabilize solid-state emitters of single photons and other non-classical states of light.

This study reports on the design and characterization of new ionizable amino-polyesters (APEs), synthesized via ring opening polymerization (ROP) of lactones with tertiary amino-alcohols that enable tissue and cell type selective delivery of mRNA. With a diverse library of APEs formulated into lipid nanoparticles (LNP), structure-activity parameters crucial for efficient transfection are established and APE-LNPs are identified that can preferentially home to and elicit effective mRNA expression with low in vivo toxicity in lung endothelium, liver hepatocytes, and splenic antigen presenting cells, including APE-LNP demonstrating nearly tenfold more potent systemic mRNA delivery to the lungs than vivo-jetPEI.
