Duration of SARS-CoV-2 viremia and its correlation to mortality and inflammatory parameters in patients hospitalized for COVID-19: a cohort study.

SARS-CoV-2 viremia at admission is associated with high risk for mortality. However, longitudinal data on viremia duration are limited. Viremic patients hospitalized for COVID-19 were included in a cohort.

Importance of Full-Collapse Vesicle Exocytosis for Synaptic Fatigue-Resistance at Rat Fast and Slow Muscle Neuromuscular Junctions.

Neurotransmitter release during trains of activity usually involves two vesicle pools (readily releasable pool, or RRP, and reserve pool, or RP) and two exocytosis mechanisms ("full-collapse" and "kiss-and-run"). However, synaptic terminals are adapted to differing patterns of use and the relationship of these factors to enabling terminals to adapt to differing transmitter release demands is not clear. We have therefore tested their contribution to a terminal's ability to maintain release, or synaptic fatiguability in motor terminals innervating fast-twitch (fatiguable), and postural slow-twitch (fatigue-resistant) muscles.

Temporally-patterned deep brain stimulation in a mouse model of multiple traumatic brain injury.

We report that mice with closed-head multiple traumatic brain injury (TBI) show a decrease in the motoric aspects of generalized arousal, as measured by automated, quantitative behavioral assays. Further, we found that temporally-patterned deep brain stimulation (DBS) can increase generalized arousal and spontaneous motor activity in this mouse model of TBI. This arousal increase is input-pattern-dependent, as changing the temporal pattern of DBS can modulate its effect on motor activity.

Site-directed mutagenesis studies on the Drosophila octopamine/tyramine receptor.

The cloned Drosophila octopamine/tyramine receptor can be coupled to second messenger pathways in an agonist-specific fashion by the endogenously occurring biogenic amines, octopamine and tyramine, when expressed in Chinese hamster ovary cells. We have mutated to alanine a range of receptor amino acids that could potentially form hydrogen bonds with the beta-hydroxyl group of octopamine based on homologies with alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptor subtypes. After stable expression of the mutant receptors in CHO cells we have compared the ability of octopamine and tyramine to displace [(3)H]yohimbine binding to membrane fractions from the mutant cell lines with their ability to modulate adenylyl cyclase activity in intact cells.

A comparison of agonist-specific coupling of cloned human alpha(2)-adrenoceptor subtypes.

The agonist-specific coupling properties of the three cloned human alpha(2)-adrenoceptor subtypes have been compared, when expressed at similar levels in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell lines, using noradrenaline and (+/-)-meta-octopamine as agonists. Noradrenaline can couple the receptor to both the inhibition and stimulation of forskolin-stimulated cyclic AMP production in all three receptor subtypes, with the relative strength of the coupling to the pathways varying for each of the receptor subtypes. meta-Octopamine selectively couples the alpha(2A)-adrenoceptor only to the inhibition of forskolin-stimulated cyclic AMP production.

Improvement of activated carbon for air sampling.

In order to improve the charcoal tube method, activated carbon was treated with benzyl chloride (5 and 20%) in methylene chloride and heated (300 degrees C). The carbons were evaluated with regards to water uptake, adsorption of toluene and carbon tetrachloride, desorption characteristics for polar compounds and storage stability of ketones. Carbons treated with benzyl chloride picked up less moisture, showed higher desorption efficiencies for polar compounds and lower catalytic activity compared with untreated carbons and those heat-treated with helium at 800 degrees C.

A filter method for the active and passive monitoring of sulfur dioxide in workplace air.

A method where sulfur dioxide is collected on impregnated filters (glycerol/potassium hydroxide solution) is described. Sampling can be done either with a pump or by the use of two different passive monitors available on the market. Analysis is made by ion chromatography.

Development and evaluation of field methods for ammonia in air.

Three methods for measuring ammonia in air have been evaluated. Filters impregnated with 10% (volume/volume) phosphoric acid in methanol were used for two methods. Sampling was done either with a filter cassette connected to a pump or with the filters placed in a passive monitor (Gasbadge).
