Unlabelled: Volcanic islands are often subject to flank instability, resulting from a combination of magmatic intrusions along rift zones and gravitational spreading causing extensional faulting at the surface. Here, we study the Koa'e fault system (KFS), located south of the summit caldera of Kīlauea volcano in Hawai'i, one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, prone to active faulting, episodic dike intrusions, and flank instability. Two rift zones and the KFS are major structures controlling volcanic flank instability and magma propagation.

Extension deficit builds up over centuries at divergent plate boundaries and is recurrently removed during rifting events, accompanied by magma intrusions and transient metre-scale deformation. However, information on transient near-field deformation has rarely been captured, hindering progress in understanding rifting mechanisms and evolution. Here we show new evidence of oblique rift opening during a rifting event influenced by pre-existing fractures and two centuries of extension deficit accumulation.

Objectives: Combinations of gemcitabine, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), and platinum have demonstrated improved outcomes compared with singlet chemotherapy in pancreatic and biliary cancers. This phase II study examined efficacy and safety of a novel schedule of cisplatin, fixed-dose-rate gemcitabine and infusional 5-FU.

Materials And Methods: Patients with metastatic adenocarcinoma of the pancreas or biliary tract, previously untreated or having received 1 cytotoxic regimen for advanced disease, were treated with gemcitabine 1000 mg/m intravenously (IV) over 100 minutes, cisplatin 35 mg/m IV over 30 minutes, and 5-FU 2400 mg/m IV over 48 hours on day 1 of a 14-day cycle.

Submarine eruptions that lead to the formation of new volcanic islands are rare and far from being fully understood; only a few such eruptions have been witnessed since Surtsey Island emerged to the south of Iceland in the 1960s. Here we report on two new volcanic islands that were formed in the Zubair archipelago of the southern Red Sea in 2011-2013. Using high-resolution optical satellite images, we find that the new islands grew rapidly during their initial eruptive phases and that coastal erosion significantly modified their shapes within months.

Spiders have become an important model to study the evolution of sociality, but a lack of their detailed natural history and taxonomy hinders broader comparative studies. Group-living crab spiders (Thomisidae) provide an excellent contrast to other social spiders since they lack a communal capture web, which was thought to be a critical factor in the evolution of sociality. Only three non-webbuilding crab-spider species are known to be subsocial or social, all of which belong to the genus Diaea Thorell, 1869.

Charcot foot syndrome (Charcot neuroarthropathy affecting the foot), particularly in its latter stages, may pose a significant technical challenge to the surgeon. Because of the lack of anatomic consistency, preoperative planning with virtual and physical models of the foot could improve the chances of achieving a predictable intraoperative result. In this report, we describe the use of a novel, inexpensive, 3-dimensional template printing technique that can provide, with just a normal printer, multiple "copies" of the foot to be repaired.

Improving survival in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) is no longer an elusive goal. With the expansion of knowledge regarding the biology of the disease, we are witnessing a plethora of novel therapeutics that are undergoing testing in clinical trials. Since the approval of docetaxel for metastatic CRPC in 2004, three additional agents have demonstrated improvements in overall survival in randomized phase III trials: two agents (cabazitaxel and sipuleucel-T) were approved by the FDA in 2010, and a third (abiraterone) was approved in April of 2011.

Background: Cooperative hunting and foraging in spiders is rare and prone to cheating such that the actions of selfish individuals negatively affect the whole group. The resulting social dilemma may be mitigated by kin selection since related individuals lose indirect fitness benefits by acting selfishly. Indeed, cooperation with genetic kin reduces the disadvantages of within-group competition in the subsocial spider Stegodyphus lineatus, supporting the hypothesis that high relatedness is an important pre-adaptation in the transition to sociality in spiders.

Cold agglutinin disease occurring with cryoglobulinemia is a rare occurrence. Here, we report a patient with mixed cryoglobulinemia that was treated with rituximab and, after response, developed an anti-Pr cold agglutinin that manifested with hemolysis and microvascular occlusion causing mesenteric ischemia and cerebral infarction. Unlike previous reports of patients with cryoglobulinemia and cold agglutinin disease, our patient did not have a detectable cryoprecipitate when his cold agglutinin manifested.

We undertook a retrospective cohort study of 51 feet in 49 patients with surgically managed second metatarsophalangeal joint instability, including repair of the crossover second toe deformity. The fundamental intervention consisted of proximal interphalangeal joint arthrodesis combined with second metatarsophalangeal joint relocation and Kirschner-wire transfixation, and this was performed alone or in combination with one of the following additional surgical maneuvers: flexor tendon transfer or flexor set release, flexor plate repair, placement of a plantar-lateral retention suture, extensor tendon transfer, metatarsophalangeal arthroplasty, metatarsal osteotomy, or second-to-third syndactyly. The outcome of interest was the presence of a transverse plane second metatarsophalangeal joint angle of 0 degrees to 15 degrees measured on the late postoperative follow-up radiograph.

Tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) possess multiple functions, in addition to their matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitory activity. The continuously growing incisor of mouse possesses a stem cell compartment at the apical end of the epithelium (the apical loop) and thus provides an excellent tool to analyze the mechanisms of organogenesis and cytodifferentiation. To understand the functions of TIMPs in tooth development, we have analyzed the gene expression and protein localization of TIMP-1, -2, and -3 during mouse incisor development, from embryonic day 13 (E13) to postnatal day 3 (P3).

The gene expression and protein distribution of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) -2, -9, membrane type-1 MMP (MT1-MMP), as well as of TIMP-1, -2, and -3 were analyzed during mouse molar development. Immunohistochemical data demonstrated that all the MMPs investigated were expressed in the dental epithelium and mesenchyme. In contrast, gene and protein expression analysis for TIMPs showed that they were differentially expressed.

Odontoblast terminal differentiation occurs according to a tooth-specific pattern and implies both temporospatially regulated epigenetic signaling and the expression of specific competence. Differentiation of odontoblasts (withdrawal from the cell cycle, cytological polarization, and secretion of predentin/dentin) is controlled by the inner dental epithelium, and the basement membrane (BM) plays a major role both as a substrate and as a reservoir of paracrine molecules. Cytological differentiation implies changes in the organization of the cytoskeleton and is controlled by cytoskeleton-plasma membrane-extracellular matrix interactions.

Relationships between cell-cell/cell-matrix interactions and enamel organ histomorphogenesis were examined by immunostaining and electron microscopy. During the cap-bell transition in the mouse molar, laminin-5 (LN5) disappeared from the basement membrane (BM) associated with the inner dental epithelium (IDE), and nondividing IDE cells from the enamel knot (EK) underwent a tooth-specific segregation in as many subpopulations as cusps develop. In the incisor, the basement membrane (BM) in contact with EK cells showed strong staining for LN5 and integrin alpha 6 beta 4.
