Shigellosis remains a major cause of diarrheal disease in developing countries and causes substantial morbidity and mortality in children. Glycoconjugate vaccines consisting of bacterial surface polysaccharides conjugated to carrier proteins are the most effective vaccines for controlling invasive bacterial infections. Nevertheless, the development of a multivalent conjugate vaccine to prevent Shigellosis has been hampered by the complex manufacturing process as the surface polysaccharide for each strain requires extraction, hydrolysis, chemical activation and conjugation to a carrier protein.

Although the project is ongoing, it is already recognised that the information chain: "measurement-transmission-forecast-alert" can be shortened, i.e.

Here we show that the monomeric extracellular domain of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) has a flexible structure. Binding of VEGF to membrane-distal immunoglobulin-like domains causes receptor dimerization and promotes further interaction between receptor monomers through the membrane-proximal immunoglobulin-like domain 7.

VEGFs bind to three types of receptor tyrosine kinases, VEGF receptors 1, 2, and 3, that are predominantly expressed on endothelial and some hematopoietic cells. Pox viruses of the Orf family encode highly related proteins called VEGF-E that show only 25-35% amino acid identity with VEGF-A but bind with comparable affinity to VEGFR-2.

The development of phage display libraries encoding a large repertoire of single chain antibodies, scFv, allows the rapid and efficient isolation of antibodies specific for almost any type of molecule. A great advantage of such recombinant antibodies is the possibility to functionalize them by introducing new amino acid sequences.

Alcohol disorders were diagnosed by the head nurse or a physician in the hospital where the patient was being attended, and by means of the CAGE self-questionnaire. This descriptive survey, carried out on one particular day, concerned 7626 patients.

Our analysis of more than 200 samples allowed us to determine normal reference values, to be used in characterizing occupational exposure. These values are expressed both in nanograms per 1000 cells (of all kinds) and nanograms per 1000 macrophages to correlate lavage efficiency and dust content of the alveoli.

Energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence allows the simultaneous determination of platinum and essential trace-elements in plasma and filtered plasma. Pharmacokinetics of platinum and the variations of trace-elements levels with respect to the normal mean values before and during the treatment are reported. Particularly during the treatment we observed that total iron concentration clearly increases in plasma, which suggests a hemolytic effect of the drug.

The low detection limits and the ability to perform multi-elemental analysis permit one to establish or confirm occupational exposure of workers. We also describe different methods used to check our method and our results.

A 20-microL sample of a homogenized lavage fluid, to which two internal standards (containing Y and V) have been added, is deposited on a polypropylene film, 4 microns in thickness, and analyzed by x-ray fluorescence. We report the analytical procedure, the detection limits, and the reproducibility.

The analytical procedure has been developed with standard sera, and standardization, detection limits, and reproducibility have been established. A 50-microL sample of diluted serum, to which an internal standard has been added, is deposited on a thin (4-microns thick) polypropylene film and analyzed by x-ray fluorescence.
