Background: Although the adverse impact of substandard informal housing has been widely documented, most studies concentrated on developing societies, thereby leaving informal housing in developed regions underexplored. This study examines Hong Kong, where limited dwelling size is a distinctive feature that characterises informal housing, to explore the impact of housing informality on mental health, with a particular focus on dwelling size. It centers on subdivided units (SDUs), which are tiny compartments partitioned from a large domestic quarter, to understand how housing informality and housing size affect the mental well-being of female caregivers, who typically bear the brunt of the housework.

Removal of recalcitrant lignin from wastewater remains a critical bottleneck in multiple aspects relating to microbial carbon cycling ranging from incomplete treatment of biosolids during wastewater treatment to limited conversion of biomass feedstock to biofuels. Based on previous studies showing that the white rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Fenton chemistry synergistically degrade lignin, we sought to determine optimum levels of Fenton addition and the mechanisms underlying this synergy. We tested the extent of degradation of lignin under different ratios of Fenton reagents and found that relatively low levels of HO and Fe(II) enhanced fungal lignin degradation, achieving 80.

Objectives: In this study, I examined the low uptake of oral contraceptives (OCs) in China and the factors affecting the reluctance among unmarried Chinese women seeking abortion to use OCs to prevent unintended pregnancies.

Study Design: I conducted ethnographic and participant observation in multiple medical facilities and interviewed 62 women who were seeking or had had an abortion between 2013 and 2017 in a coastal city in east China. I analyzed data regarding the women's perceptions and experiences of using OCs through a thematic analysis approach.

Metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE) is a versatile anisotropic etch for silicon although its mechanism is not well understood. Here we propose that the Schottky junction formed between metal and silicon plays an essential role on the distribution of holes in silicon injected from hydrogen peroxide. The proposed mechanism can be used to explain the dependence of the etching kinetics on the doping level, doping type, crystallographic surface direction, and etchant solution composition.

Engineered optoelectronic surfaces must control both the flow of light and the flow of electrons at an interface; however, nanostructures for photon and electron management have typically been studied and optimized separately. In this work, we unify these concepts in a new hybrid metal-semiconductor surface that offers both strong light absorption and high electrical conductivity. We use metal-assisted chemical etching to nanostructure the surface of a silicon wafer, creating an array of silicon nanopillars protruding through holes in a gold film.

Peroxynitrite has been suggested to be the potent oxidant causing toxicity to neurons and oligodendrocytes (OLs). Our previous studies have illustrated that intracellular zinc liberation contributes to peroxynitrite toxicity to mature OLs. In this study, we further investigated the signaling pathways involved in this event and identified protein kinase C (PKC) as an important early signaling molecule.

ARB1 is an essential yeast protein closely related to members of a subclass of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) superfamily of proteins that are known to interact with ribosomes and function in protein synthesis or ribosome biogenesis. We show that depletion of ARB1 from Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells leads to a deficit in 18S rRNA and 40S subunits that can be attributed to slower cleavage at the A0, A1, and A2 processing sites in 35S pre-rRNA, delayed processing of 20S rRNA to mature 18S rRNA, and a possible defect in nuclear export of pre-40S subunits. Depletion of ARB1 also delays rRNA processing events in the 60S biogenesis pathway.

RLI1 is an essential yeast protein closely related in sequence to two soluble members of the ATP-binding cassette family of proteins that interact with ribosomes and function in translation elongation (YEF3) or translational control (GCN20). We show that affinity-tagged RLI1 co-purifies with eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 (eIF3), eIF5, and eIF2, but not with other translation initiation factors or with translation elongation or termination factors. RLI1 is associated with 40 S ribosomal subunits in vivo, but it can interact with eIF3 and -5 independently of ribosomes.

Protein kinase GCN2 regulates translation initiation by phosphorylating eukaryotic initiation factor 2alpha (eIF2alpha), impeding general protein synthesis but specifically inducing translation of GCN4, a transcriptional activator of amino acid biosynthetic genes in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. GCN2 activity is stimulated in amino acid-deprived cells through binding of uncharged tRNA to a domain related to histidyl tRNA synthetase. We show that GCN2 is phosphorylated by another kinase on serine 577, located N-terminal to the kinase domain.
