The mammalian cell cycle is coordinated by primarily four cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs), which are activated by a family of cyclin proteins to phosphorylate diverse protein effectors of cell growth and division. A wealth of qualitative protein interaction studies have supported a model in which different CDKs have specific cognate cyclin partners. However, there have been few quantitative measurements of binding kinetics and affinity to support our understanding of CDK-cyclin preferences and the structural origins of those preferences.

A growing number of therapies are being developed to target the cell cycle machinery for the treatment of cancer and other human diseases. Consequently, a greater understanding of the factors regulating cell cycle progression becomes essential to help enhance the response to these new therapies. Here, using data from the Cancer Dependency Map, we identified the poorly-studied factor FAM53C as a new regulator of cell cycle progression.

Skin autofluorescence of advanced glycation end-products, glycemic memory, and diabetes complications.

Since the pionneer work of Meerwaldt and the Groningen team, who related skin autofluorescence (SAF) to the dermal concentrations of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), hundreds of articles have been devoted to its application in diabetes. Due to the slow turnover of the AGEs formed on collagen of the skin, the SAF can reflect the progressive accumulation of AGEs and hence be a marker of long-term glucose exposure. Accordingly, relations with HbA1c from the previous 3-10 years have been established in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and even in gestational diabetes mellitus.

Radiation-Induced Pharyngeal Necrosis and Cervical Spine Osteoradionecrosis in Patients With Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Background: Radiation therapy with or without chemotherapy is commonly used as an adjunct or alternative to surgery for treating head and neck cancer (HNC). In rare cases, radiation-induced side effects such as posterior pharyngeal wall necrosis, fistula formation, and osteoradionecrosis (ORN) can lead to dangerous complications of the cervical spine (C-spine).

Methods: We conducted a literature review on C-spine ORN in HNC, and we reported four additional cases following the treatment of oropharyngeal carcinoma.

Important intergenerational transmission of knowledge in promotion of well-being and cultural identity in Greenland.

The "Kinguaariit Inuunerissut" (KI) camps, meaning "generations in well-being" in Greenlandic, was a pilot initiative designed to enhance cultural identity and intergenerational connections through culturally relevant activities. The outcomes of the KI-camps have informed the development of a broader KI-concept aiming at tailoring and implementing elements from KI-camps into early childhood education services, after-school programmes, and schools. In this paper we present the results from three workshop held in January 2024 in Sisimiut, Greenland where 28 older participants and 28 professionals were asked about essential knowledge and skills to be passed down to younger generations.

This study explores the experiences of bereaved siblings in Israel, examining how different causes of death affect their psychological well-being. We recruited three groups of siblings who lost loved ones as a result of military service, terrorism, or civilian circumstances. A total of 159 bereaved siblings completed questionnaires measuring complications of grief (CG), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and world assumptions.

Chondrocyte columns, which are a hallmark of growth plate architecture, play a central role in bone elongation. Columns are formed by clonal expansion following rotation of the division plane, resulting in a stack of cells oriented parallel to the growth direction. A Randomized, Controlled Trial Evaluating Perioperative Risk-Stratification and Risk-Based, Protocol-Driven Management After Elective Major Cancer Surgery.
