A new approach using orthogonal analytical techniques is developed for chemical identification. High resolution mass spectrometry and infrared ion spectroscopy are applied through a 5-level confidence paradigm to demonstrate the effectiveness of nontargeted workflow for the identification of hazardous organophosphates. Triphenyl phosphate is used as a surrogate organophosphate for occupational exposure, and silicone wristbands are used to represent personal samplers.

Here, we present a novel proof-of-concept that combines an Air2Liquid sampler in conjunction with an oil-in-water microfluidic assay for detection of organophosphates. We believe this proof-of-concept will enable development of a new platform technology for semivolatile detection that we have demonstrated to detect 50 pmoles (2 ppb) of neurotoxic organophosphates.

Although there is standard-setting activity for "no-lift" programs in some states, there is still no federal standard. Health care worker unions and nurses' associations have begun to take action through training members in equipment need, use, and acceptance in programs to encourage adoption of no-lifting programs.

Using a disease management and population-based approach, a multidisciplinary team sought to (1). organize health care in an integrative framework, (2).

The authors reviewed 1997 data from the American Association of Poison Control Centers' Toxic Exposure Surveillance System for occupational exposures to persons 6 to 19 years old. In 1997, there were 3442 reported occupational exposure cases among 6- to 19-year-olds.

Teenage workers face a variety of health and safety hazards. Occupational injury and illness are largely preventable, and family physicians can play a crucial role in this prevention effort by advising adolescents about common workplace dangers.

Method: The screening tool consisted of two sections an assessment of academic performance (the TASS) and an evaluation of applicants' generalist versus specialist orientation (the GSSS); each applicant's file was assessed by two raters. The revised interview included specific questions and scenarios related to family medicine.
Problem Being Addressed: In response to the accreditation guidelines of the College of Family Physicians of Canada's (CFPC) Task Force on Intraining Evaluation, the Department of Family Medicine at McGill University implemented a faculty advisor program on July 1, 1993.
Objective Of Program: In addition to meeting the requirements of the CFPC, the faculty advisor program was developed to foster communication between residents and faculty, increase opportunities for feedback, promote self-directed learning, and personalize the educational experience of trainees.
Main Components Of Program: Residents were assigned an advisor.
Medical educators, funders, and policy makers are placing greater emphasis on educating physicians-in-training to provide community-responsive care and to participate in community-focused health-promotion and disease-prevention efforts. The MCP [symbol: see text] Hahnemann School of Medicine requires all first-year students to work in the community on projects involving health education, needs and resource assessment, advocacy, outreach, and other community health skills. The Department of Community and Preventive Medicine at MCP [symbol: see text] Hahnemann directs these required courses, as well as other elective programs that provide students the opportunity to develop community health competencies.

Common lessons learned by the programs are discussed and guidelines are set forth on staffing, family enrollment and retention, service provision, and risk-management practices for work with similar clients. The families in these programs are briefly profiled, based on data collected on approximately half of the parents and children.

All residents of McGill University's Department of Family Medicine were surveyed by mail about their family practice clinic experience. Residents were generally satisfied with their training site and their supervision, but noted problems with volume and diversity of patients, learning certain procedures, and knowledge of community resources. They did not want more family medicine clinic time.

To assess the value of the chest X-ray in helping to make the diagnosis of asthma at the primary care level, we studied the medical records of 58 patients aged 18-40 with the diagnosis of mild to moderate asthma and for whom both simple spirometry-forced one-second expiratory volume (FEV1) and/or peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR)--and a chest X-ray had been performed. Only 21 of 58 (36%) had spirometry indicative of asthma (SPI+) while 34 of 58 (59%) had abnormal chest X-rays (CXR+)--"increased markings" and/or "low diaphragm.

The authors conducted a randomized trial among sophomores to evaluate a Macintosh-based application on occupational lung disease (OH-CBL). The program emphasizes interactive learning and skills practice through a case-based approach.

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection remains an exceedingly rare cause of myocardial ischemia. The patients are usually young and female, and the dissection is frequently fatal. The use of polytetrafluoroethylene as an aortocoronary conduit is generally followed by early occlusion.

Radiographic findings follow the pathological progression of bony changes. The presented cases document the development of avascular necrosis in a previously normal metatarsal that occurred after trauma or surgery elsewhere in the foot.
