β-Catenin signaling pathway regulates cardiomyocytes proliferation and differentiation, though its involvement in metabolic regulation of cardiomyocytes remains unknown. We used one-day-old mice with cardiac-specific knockout of β-catenin and neonatal rat ventricular myocytes treated with β-catenin inhibitor to investigate the role of β-catenin metabolism regulation in perinatal cardiomyocytes. Transcriptomics of perinatal β-catenin-ablated hearts revealed a dramatic shift in the expression of genes involved in metabolic processes.

Surface-modified maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) nanoparticles were obtained by using a conventional precipitation method and coated with D-mannose and poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide). Both the initial and the modified particles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering with regard to morphology, particle size and polydispersity. In vitro survival of human stem cells was then investigated by using the methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay, which showed that D-mannose- and poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide)-coated γ-Fe2O3 particles exhibit much lower level of cytotoxicity than the non-coated γ-Fe2O3.

New class of FGFR1 kinase inhibitors with naphthostyril heterocycle has been identified. A series of N-phenylnaphthostyril-1-sulfonamides has been synthesized and tested in vitro. It was revealed that the most active compound N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)naphthostyril-1-sulfonamide inhibited FGFR1 with IC50 of 2 µM.

Structural and functional polymorphism of saprophytic bacterium lectin was demonstrated to be due to subunit organization of the molecule as it was shown for many lectins of plant and animal origin. Three isoforms of extracellular sialic acid-specific lectin produced by Bacillus subtilis saprophytic strain IMV B-7014 were discovered that differed for physicochemical and biological properties. The influence of the lectin isoforms on mammalian cells proliferation and morphology in vitro depends both on the subunit organization of the protein molecule and the type of cells under study.

Growth and morphological properties of a novel mouse cell line G1 have been investigated. It has been shown that cells of this cell line possess the ability of spontaneous transformation in vitro: the cells have unlimited growth in culture, grow in medium with a low serum content and form multilayer colonies on a cell monolayer and cell colonies inside agar. Using micronucleus test it has been revealed that cells of the G1 cell line possess different forms of aberrant mitosis.

Objectives: The objective of these studies was to evaluate human insulin gene expression following intraliver plasmid injection in diabetic mice as a potential approach to gene therapy for insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

An approach for determination of cytotoxicity of chemical and biological drugs which combine the estimation of quality and quantity of cells after their treatment are proposed by the authors. The visual control of cellular minicultures permits one: 1) to register specific and pathologic alterations of cell morphology, 2) to trace their development in dynamics under the action of individual or complex drugs and 3) to choose the optimum time for the experiment fixation. The special staining of the treated cells and measurement of the optical density of absorbed histological dye permits one to make a conclusion about the changing of the cells quantity.
