Homogeneous dispersion of plant food pigments is indispensable to study their characteristic fluorescence features for non-destructive rapid monitoring of food systems. However, it is highly challenging to obtain such optical grade homogenized stable dispersion of various plant pigments in aqueous media for tracing their precise fluorescence signatures. Herein, we demonstrate a unique strategy to disperse various pigments, such as chlorophylls, carotenoids and phenolic compounds by the high-speed shear-force mixing of fresh green and red bell peppers (Capsicum annuum) in an aqueous medium with followed centrifugation and filtration.

Graphene, a two-dimensional hexagonal honeycomb carbon structure, is widely used in membrane technologies thanks to its unique optical, electrical, mechanical, thermal, chemical and photoelectric properties. The light weight, mechanical strength, anti-bacterial effect, and pollution-adsorption properties of graphene membranes are valuable in water treatment studies. Incorporation of nanoparticles like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and metal oxide into the graphene filtering nanocomposite membrane structure can provide an improved photocatalysis process in a water treatment system.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have extensive pluripotent potential to differentiate into various cell types, and thus they are an important tool for regenerative medicine and biomedical research. In this work, the differentiation of hTERT-transduced adipose-derived MSCs (hMSCs) into chondrocytes, adipocytes and osteoblasts on substrates with nanotopography generated by magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MNPs) and DNA was investigated. Citrate-stabilized MNPs were synthesized by the chemical co-precipitation method and sized around 10 nm according to microscopy studies.

The importance and need for eco-oriented technologies has increased worldwide, which leads to an enhanced development of methods for the synthesis of nanoparticles using biological agents. This review de-scribes the current approaches to the preparation of biogenic silver nanoparticles, using plant extracts and filtrates of fungi and microorganisms. The peculiarities of the synthesis of particles depending on the source of biocomponents are considered as well as physico-morphological, antibacterial and antifungal properties of the resulting nanoparticles which are compared with such properties of silver nanoparticles obtained by chemical synthesis.

We examine the implication of intracavity nonlinearity for harmonic mode locking (HML) by exploiting highly nonlinear fiber in a carbon nanotube film mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser. It is found that the reasonably large nonlinearity is of benefit to increase the extent of harmonic order while the excessive nonlinearity leads to some peculiar multi-pulse patterns such as noise-like pulse and soliton rain. Via appropriate nonlinearity management, nearly 4 GHz repetition rate pulses at the 91st harmonic with 936 fs pulse duration are delivered under the pump power of 280 mW.

FeO nanoparticles were obtained by chemical coprecipitation of iron chloride and sodium hydroxide. The morphology and sizes of the obtained nanoparticles were characterized using laser Doppler velocimetry, transmission electron and atomic force microscopy. Then the nanoparticles were stabilized by three polycations (polyethylenimine (PEI), poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH), poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC)) to increase their biocompatibility.

Three-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites have been demonstrated as great materials for applications in optoelectronics and photonics. However, their inherent instabilities in the presence of moisture, light, and heat may hinder their commercialization. Alternatively, emerging two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have recently attracted increasing attention owing to their great environmental stability and inherent natural quantum-well structure.

A controllable passive harmonic mode locking (HML) in an erbium-doped fiber laser with a soliton pulse shaping using a single-wall carbon nanotube has been experimentally demonstrated. By increasing the pump power and adjusting the in-cavity polarization controller, we reached the 51st-order harmonic (902 MHz) having the output power of 37 mW. We attribute the observed high-frequency HML to the electrostriction effect caused by periodic pulses and leading to excitation of the radial and torsional-radial acoustic modes in the transverse section of the laser.

A single/dual-wavelength switchable bidirectional Q-switched fiber laser using a bidirectional fiber polarizer is demonstrated. A 45° tilted fiber grating is used as a bidirectional fiber polarizer to induce a bidirectional intracavity birefringence filter in both clockwise (CW) and counter-clockwise (CCW) directions. A carbon nanotube saturable absorber is employed to produce Q-switched pulses.

Composites of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and water-soluble polymers (WSP) are the focus of significant worldwide research due to a number of applications in biotechnology and photonics, particularly for ultrashort pulse generation. Despite the unique possibility of constructing non-linear optical SWNT-WSP composites with controlled optical properties, their thermal degradation threshold and limit of operational power remain unexplored. In this study, we discover the nature of the SWNT-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film thermal degradation and evaluate the modification of the composite properties under continuous high-power ultrashort pulse laser operation.

With the progression towards personalised and age-appropriate medicines, the production of drug loaded liposomes at the point of care would be highly desirable. In particular, liposomal solubilisation agents that can be produced rapidly and easily would provide a new option in personalised medicines. Such a process could also be used as a rapid tool for the formulation and pre-clinical screening of low soluble drugs.

Novel applications of organic dyes and vast opportunities for their molecular tailoring keep the focus of the scientific community on the issues of symmetry breaking in the systems having different location of uncompensated charge, which has tremendous impact on photoluminescent properties of the dyes. In this article, we provide distinctive experimental evidence of three relaxation paths (one symmetrical and two unsymmetrical) of excited states by analysis of lifetime and spectra of time-resolved fluorescence at low temperature with strong support of quantum-chemical modeling. Importantly, the studied cyanine dye (astraphloxin) in aqueous solution has two different unsymmetrical relaxation paths of excited states in the polymethinic and donor-acceptor polyenic forms, where the last form strongly diminishes in less polar media.

The complex nonlinear dynamics of mode-locked fibre lasers, including a broad variety of dissipative structures and self-organization effects, have drawn significant research interest. Around the 2 μm band, conventional saturable absorbers (SAs) possess small modulation depth and slow relaxation time and, therefore, are incapable of ensuring complex inter-pulse dynamics and bound-state soliton generation. We present observation of multi-soliton complex generation in mode-locked thulium (Tm)-doped fibre laser, using double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWNT-SA) and nonlinear polarisation evolution (NPE).

An Erbium-doped fibre ring laser hybrid mode-locked with single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) and nonlinear polarisation evolution (NPE) without an optical isolator has been investigated for various cavity conditions. Precise control of the state of polarisation (SOP) in the cavity ensures different losses for counter-propagating optical fields. As the result, the laser operates in quasi-unidirectional regime in both clockwise (CW) and counter-clockwise (CCW) directions with the emission strengths difference of the directions of 22 dB.

Tin oxide is considered to be one of the most promising semiconductor oxide materials for use as a gas sensor. However, a simple route for the controllable build-up of nanostructured, sufficiently pure and hierarchical SnO2 structures for gas sensor applications is still a challenge. In the current work, an aqueous SnO2 nanoparticulate precursor sol, which is free of organic contaminants and sorbed ions and is fully stable over time, was prepared in a highly reproducible manner from an alkoxide Sn(OR)4 just by mixing it with a large excess of pure neutral water.
