Multi-host communities are perfect scenarios for the emergence and spread of pathogens, threatening the recovery of endangered, isolated, or inbred populations, such as the brown bear () in northwestern Spain. The population recovery in recent years has forced bears to occupy highly anthropized areas, increasing their interaction with human and domestic animals, with potential consequences for global health. During 2022-2023 a survey of parasites, bacteria and viruses shared between wildlife, domestic animals and humans was performed in this population using non-invasive surveillance, i.

In an animal production system, different stressors may cause the depletion of muscle glycogen stores, resulting in an elevated pH at 24 h (pH), which leads to cell metabolism alterations that affect the conversion of muscle into meat, causing meat quality defects, such as dark-cutting beef, also known as dark, firm, and dry (DFD) beef. This process may involve the alteration of small non-coding RNAs (miRNAs), which play critical regulatory roles in cellular processes. Here, we determined whether differential miRNA expression in the muscle from the Asturiana de los Valles breed at 24 h could serve as an early indicator of beef quality defects.

Understanding mortality causes is important for the conservation of endangered species, especially in small and isolated populations inhabiting anthropized landscapes where both natural and human-caused mortality may hinder the conservation of these species. We investigated the mortality causes of 53 free-ranging brown bears (Ursus arctos) found dead between 1998 and 2023 in the Cantabrian Mountains (northwestern Spain), a highly human-modified region where bears are currently recovering after being critically threatened in the last century. We detected natural traumatic injuries in 52.

Hepatoblastoma (HB) is a rare childhood tumour with an evolving molecular landscape. We present the first comprehensive metabolomic analysis using untargeted and targeted liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) of paired tumour and non-tumour surgical samples in HB patients ( = 8 pairs). This study demonstrates that the metabolomic landscape of HB is distinct from that of non-tumour (NT) liver tissue, with 35 differentially abundant metabolites mapping onto pathways such as fatty acid transport, glycolysis, the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, branched-chain amino acid degradation and glutathione synthesis.

Sustainable dairy farms are characterised by the self-production of forage for animal feed. These farms are sometimes located near industrial areas, entailing a risk of food chain contamination with hazardous metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Accordingly, evaluating the impact of pollution on forage and milk is of great interest.

Background And Aims: Hepatoblastoma (HB) is the predominant form of pediatric liver cancer, though it remains exceptionally rare. While treatment outcomes for children with HB have improved, patients with advanced tumors face limited therapeutic choices. Additionally, survivors often suffer from long-term adverse effects due to treatment, including ototoxicity, cardiotoxicity, delayed growth, and secondary tumors.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists studied over 176,000 people to see how certain genes might protect against Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD).
  • They found that specific types of a gene called HLA could help reduce the risk of these diseases and lower harmful proteins in the brain.
  • This suggests that our immune system might help protect us from PD and AD, which could lead to new treatments in the future.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate gene expression and might resist adverse physicochemical conditions, which makes them potential biomarkers. They are being investigated as biomarkers of dairy production systems, based on the variations in their levels in raw milk depending on animal diet and management. Whether miRNA levels can serve as biomarkers for dairy products remains unclear, since technological or culinary treatments, such as fermentation, may alter their levels.

Dolphins are marine mammals that often live in coastal habitats. Common causes of severe skeletal disorders among wild dolphins are congenital vertebral anomalities, collisions with sea vessels, trauma, hunting-related injury, infectious diseases, environmental pollution, and tumors. A free-ranging male, 3-year-old common dolphin () was found dead in the coast of Asturias in northern Spain.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) represent a class of small noncoding RNAs that are considered a novel emerging class of disease biomarkers in a variety of afflictions. Sensitive detection of miRNA is typically achieved using hybridization-based methods coupled with genetic amplification techniques. Although their sensitivity has improved, amplification techniques often present erroneous results due to their complexity.

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) frequently coexist in soils near industrial areas and sometimes in environmental compartments directly linked to feed (forage) and food (milk) production. However, the distribution of these pollutants along the dairy farm production chain is unclear. Here, we analyzed soil, forage, and milk samples from 16 livestock farms in Spain: several PTEs and PAHs were quantified.

Canine adenovirus type 1 (CAdV-1) causes infectious canine hepatitis (ICH) and has recently been described as a cause of death among endangered populations of European brown bear (Ursus arctos arctos) in the Cantabrian mountain range in Asturias, Spain. Sympatric wild and domestic carnivores can act as reservoirs of the virus and likely spread it into the environment and subsequently transmit it to brown bears. The present work investigates the prevalence and geo-temporal distribution of CAdV-1 among free-ranging wolves (Canis lupus) in Asturias from 2009 to 2018, during which three fatal cases of ICH were reported among brown bears in the region.
