Background: Evidence-based practice (EBP) is foundational to safe and quality health care; however, barriers to nursing engagement in EBP have been well documented. To circumvent these barriers, nursing leadership must proactively implement system-level, multifaceted strategies within their organization to enhance EBP engagement. One Veterans Administration (VA) hospital has operationalized these strategies.

Geographic Variation in Cesarean Sections in the United States: Trends, Correlates, and Other Interesting Facts.

Analyzing data spanning three decades covering the near universe of births, we study county-level differences in Cesarean section (C-section) rates among first-time mothers of singleton births. Our research reveals persistent geographic variation in C-section rates for both low- and high-risk groups. Counties with elevated C-section rates consistently perform more C-sections across mothers at all levels of appropriateness for the procedure.

Global organic and inorganic aerosol hygroscopicity and its effect on radiative forcing.

The climate effects of atmospheric aerosol particles serving as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) depend on chemical composition and hygroscopicity, which are highly variable on spatial and temporal scales. Here we present global CCN measurements, covering diverse environments from pristine to highly polluted conditions. We show that the effective aerosol hygroscopicity, κ, can be derived accurately from the fine aerosol mass fractions of organic particulate matter (ϵ) and inorganic ions (ϵ) through a linear combination, κ = ϵ ⋅ κ + ϵ ⋅ κ.

Coupling Sr-Nd-Hf Isotope Ratios and Elemental Analysis to Accurately Quantify North African Dust Contributions to PM in a Complex Urban Atmosphere by Reducing Mineral Dust Collinearity.

Tracking Saharan-Sahelian dust across the globe is essential to elucidate its effects on Earth's climate, radiation budget, hydrologic cycle, nutrient cycling, and also human health when it seasonally enters populated/industrialized regions of Africa, Europe, and North America. However, the elemental composition of mineral dust arising locally from construction activities and aeolian soil resuspension overlaps with African dust. Therefore, we derived a novel "isotope-resolved chemical mass balance" (IRCMB) method by employing radiogenic strontium, neodymium, and hafnium isotopes to accurately differentiate and quantitatively apportion collinear proximal and synoptic-scale crustal and anthropogenic mineral dust sources.

Screening around a COVID-19 cluster: Exploring its impact on a local virus outbreak.

Objective: In March 2020, we implemented screening of the contacts of a COVID-19 cluster having occurred in the Lot-et-Garonne department, the first department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region to be affected by the active circulation of SARS-CoV-2. We aimed to describe the impact of this screening on the local SARS-CoV-2 outbreak.

Methods: All high-risk contacts, as well as the individuals living in their households, were screened.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are a rising health and environmental concern in the United States, particularly in South Florida. Skin contact and the ingestion of contaminated water or fish and other seafood have been proven to have severe toxicity to humans in some cases. However, the impact of aerosolized HAB toxins is poorly understood.

Five-Year Program Evaluation of an Evidence-Based Practice Scholars Program.

The purpose of this article is to describe the findings of a 5-year program evaluation of a hospital-based Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Scholars Program. The EBP Scholars Program was developed in 2011 to (a) educate and engage staff in the EBP process and (b) develop a cadre of EBP mentors within each clinical unit of the organization. The evaluation of the EBP Scholars Program examined both the feasibility and the impact of the program.

The limits of simple implementation intentions: Evidence from a field experiment on making plans to exercise.

Recent large-scale randomized experiments find that helping people form implementation intentions by asking when and where they plan to act increases one-time actions, such as vaccinations, preventative screenings and voting. We investigate the effect of a simple scalable planning intervention on a repeated behavior using a randomized design involving 877 subjects at a private gym. Subjects were randomized into i) a treatment group who selected the days and times they intended to attend the gym over the next two weeks or ii) a control group who instead recorded their days of exercise in the prior two weeks.

Can financial incentives help people trying to establish new habits? Experimental evidence with new gym members.

Can financial incentives aid habit formation in people attempting to establish a positive health behavior? We provide evidence on this question from a randomized controlled trial of modest-sized incentives to attend the gym among new members of a fitness facility. Our experiment randomized 690 participants into a control group that received a $30 payment unconditionally or one of 3 incentive groups that received a payment for attending the gym at least 9 times over the first 6 weeks of membership. Two incentive treatment arms offered monetary payments of $30 and $60.

Chemotherapy and terminal skeletal muscle differentiation in WT1-mutant Wilms tumors.

Wilms tumors (WT) with WT1 mutations do not respond well to preoperative chemotherapy by volume reduction, suggesting resistance to chemotherapy. The histologic pattern of this tumor subtype indicates an intrinsic mesenchymal differentiation potential. Currently, it is unknown whether cytotoxic treatments can induce a terminal differentiation state as a direct comparison of untreated and chemotherapy-treated tumor samples has not been reported so far.

Aims And Objectives: As a first step in developing traumatic brain injury-specific nursing education, the purpose of this study was to investigate nurses' concerns about caring for patients with moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury.

Background: Patients with moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury typically have significant immediate and chronic cognitive impairments. These cognitive impairments can negatively affect their inpatient stay after an acute traumatic brain injury and affect their health care later in life when seeking care for other acute health conditions during the chronic phase of traumatic brain injury.

Uncoupling of EGFR-RAS signaling and nuclear localization of YBX1 in colorectal cancer.

The transcription factor YBX1 can act as a mediator of signals transmitted via the EGFR-RAS-MAPK axis. YBX1 expression has been associated with tumor progression and prognosis in multiple types of cancer. Immunohistochemical studies have revealed dependency between YBX1 expression and individual EGFR family members.

Evaluation of a Curriculum to Improve Clinician Communication With Adolescents.

Introduction: While guidelines for health care clinicians working with adolescent patients encourage open communication and confidential visits, current practices often fall short and many adolescents do not receive confidential care or adequate communication about sexually transmitted infections, reproductive health, and other sensitive health topics.

Methods: The Providers and Teens Communicating for Health (PATCH) program in Wisconsin aims to bridge communication gaps between adolescents and health care clinicians. Teen educators are hired and trained to lead 2 types of workshops-one targeting peers and one targeting clinicians.

Low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) is routinely used for antithrombotic treatment of cancer patients. Preclinical- and clinical data suggest that LMWH has beneficial effects for cancer patients beyond the prevention of thrombosis, i.e.

Outbreak of psittacosis in a group of women exposed to Chlamydia psittaci-infected chickens.

Eight cases of psittacosis due to Chlamydia psittaci were identified in May 2013 among 15 individuals involved in chicken gutting activities on a mixed poultry farm in France. All cases were women between 42 and 67 years-old. Cases were diagnosed by serology and PCR of respiratory samples.

Objectives: To describe young women's reasons to seek and not to seek sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening; to explore whether reasons differed by age and STI screening history.

Design And Sample: Cross-sectional, descriptive. Female students (N = 216) at a university in the Midwestern United States.

The WT1 gene encodes a zinc finger transcription factor important for normal kidney development. WT1 is a suppressor for Wilms tumour development and an oncogene for diverse malignant tumours. We recently established cell lines from primary Wilms tumours with different WT1 mutations.

How liposomal Cisplatin overcomes chemoresistance in ovarian tumour cells.

The frequent development of cellular resistance to cisplatin in cancer patients is a serious limitation for clinical drug therapy. However, cisplatin resistance is incompletely understood. We have shown that cisplatin-resistant A2780 ovarian cancer cells (A2780cis) can efficiently be eliminated by liposomal cisplatin, which displayed similar cytotoxicity towards both A2780 and A2780cis cells.

Cold shock Y-box protein-1 proteolysis autoregulates its transcriptional activities.

Background: The Y-box protein-1 (YB-1) fulfills pleiotropic functions relating to gene transcription, mRNA processing, and translation. It remains elusive how YB-1 shuttling into the nuclear and cytoplasmic compartments is regulated and whether limited proteolysis by the 20S proteasome releases fragments with distinct function(s) and subcellular distribution(s).

Results: To address these questions, mapping of domains responsible for subcellular targeting was performed.
