Radiographic evaluation of trapeziometacarpal total joint arthroplasty: Why and how?

Total joint arthroplasty is a promising surgical treatment for painful thumb trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis. Strict surgical technique is essential to achieve a reliably good outcome. Preoperative radiographic evaluation before surgery and intraoperative fluoroscopy during surgery are valuable means of optimizing implant positioning.

Headless screw fixation of unstable ulnar styloid base fractures after distal radial fractures fixation.

Ulnar styloid fractures occur frequently concomitant with distal radial fractures. Although unstable distal radial fractures are mostly surgically treated, ulnar styloid fractures are often ignored. Unstable fractures at the base of the ulnar styloid may lead to persistent ulnar pain, due to distal radioulnar joint instability or ulnar styloid non-union.

Analysis of trapeziometacarpal prosthesis cup position with respect to the trapezial anatomy.

The purpose of this study was to analyse the anatomy of the trapezium with regard to cup position in trapeziometacarpal replacement and identify those trapeziums that are at risk of cup perforation through the trapezoid articular surface. The width of the proximal and distal articular surface and the height of the trapezium and second metacarpal facet were measured on 96 peritrapezial views reconstructed from computed tomography scans. The trapezoid articular surface of the trapezium (TRAST) angle was calculated, and four different cup designs were virtually positioned centrally in the trapezium and parallel to the proximal articular surface.

Arthroscopic Volar Extrinsic Plicature of the Volar Extrinsic Ligaments for Chronic Volar Scapholunate Instability.

The scapholunate ligamentous complex consists of the scapholunate interosseous ligament and the surrounding extrinsic ligamentous system. In cases of chronic scapholunate instability, stabilizing the extrinsic ligaments is crucial. This article presents an arthroscopic capsuloligamentous reinforcement plicature that focuses on tightening the volar scapholunate extrinsic ligaments, namely the radioscaphocapitate ligament and long radiolunate ligament, along with indirect tightening of the volar scapholunate interosseous ligament.

Arthroscopical Reinforcement of an Isolated Insufficiency of the Radioscaphocapitate Ligament to Treat Dynamic Radioscaphoid Instability: A Case Report.

The radioscaphocapitate ligament is part of the stabilizatory complex of the scaphoid. Isolated injury resulting in persistent radioscaphoid instability is rarely reported. The authors propose a technique for arthroscopic reinforcement.

Enhanced many-body localization in a kinetically constrained model.

In the study of the thermalization of closed quantum systems, the role of kinetic constraints on the temporal dynamics and the eventual thermalization is attracting significant interest. Kinetic constraints typically lead to long-lived metastable states depending on initial conditions. We consider a model of interacting hardcore bosons with an additional kinetic constraint that was originally devised to capture glassy dynamics at high densities.

Automated analysis of trapeziometacarpal joint kinematics using four-dimensional computed tomography.

The aim of this study was to develop an automated approach model to define in vivo kinematics of the trapeziometacarpal (TMC) joint using four-dimensional computed tomography. A total of 15 healthy volunteers were included and their TMC joint kinematics were studied during a retropulsion-opposition-retropulsion movement. We used cardan angles estimated from transformation matrices using a ZYX-decomposition and analysed the motion of the thumb metacarpal relative to the trapezium, the thumb metacarpal relative to the index metacarpal, and the trapezium relative to the index metacarpal.

Call for emergency action to restore dietary diversity and protect global food systems in times of COVID-19 and beyond: Results from a cross-sectional study in 38 countries.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the fragility of the global food system, sending shockwaves across countries' societies and economy. This has presented formidable challenges to sustaining a healthy and resilient lifestyle. The objective of this study is to examine the food consumption patterns and assess diet diversity indicators, primarily focusing on the food consumption score (FCS), among households in 38 countries both before and during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Stepwise Intraoperative Protocol to Minimize Complications after Volar Plating.

 Although outcome of volar plating is generally good, care should be taken to avoid specific iatrogenic and preventable complications, with an incidence reporting averaging 15%. Flexor tendon rupture due to a prominent plate, extensor tendon rupture due to a dorsal protruding screw tips, cartilage lesions due to intra-articular screw placement, loss of reduction due to insufficient stability, and persisting ulnar pain with distal radioulnar joint instability due to unstable triangular fibrocartilaginous complex lesions or unstable ulnar styloid base fractures all have been described.  We believe that a majority of these complications can be prevented by meticulous assessment of several intraoperative parameters during volar plating.

Shortening arthrodesis combined with limited fasciectomy in severe recurrent Dupuytren's disease of the fifth finger.

Objective: Management of recurrent Dupuytren's disease of the little finger is challenging. Various treatment modalities have been proposed: external fixation, local skin flap, dermofasciectomy, or even amputation. An alternative surgical technique was introduced by Honecker et al.

Development and validation of a short nutrition literacy scale for young adults.

Background: Due to their high media use, young adults are frequently exposed to contradictory or even erroneous nutrition information. To properly handle and critically assess nutrition information, young adults (both general population and patient populations) need adequate levels of nutrition literacy. Currently there is a lack of suitable instruments to measure nutrition literacy in young adults (18-25 years).

Understanding factors affecting implementation success and sustainability of a comprehensive prevention program for cardiovascular disease in primary health care: a qualitative process evaluation study combining RE-AIM and CFIR.

Aim: Our aim was to evaluate the implementation process of a comprehensive cardiovascular disease prevention program in general practice, to enhance understanding of influencing factors to implementation success and sustainability, and to learn how to overcome barriers.

Background: Cardiovascular disease and its risk factors are the world's leading cause of mortality, yet can be prevented by addressing unhealthy lifestyle behavior. Nevertheless, the transition toward a prevention-oriented primary health care remains limited.

Symptomatic bifid insertion of the Flexor Carpi Radialis Brevis.

A 35 year-old right-handed female presented with persistent wrist pain lasting two years. Imaging disclosed an accessory tendon-shaped structure, identified as a Flexor Carpi Radialis Brevis, strangling the Flexor Carpi Radialis tendon at the wrist during effort. Surgical exploration found the insertion of the Flexor Carpi Radialis Brevis to be bifid.

Development and implementation of a community health literacy hub, 'Health Kiosk'-A grassroots innovation.

Being health literate is important to get sufficient health information, to navigate the health system, to access appropriate care and to be able to self-manage health. As such it is a key determinant of health. There is a need for innovative measures to improve health literacy among people living in socioeconomically vulnerable circumstances.

Motivations for nutrition information-seeking behavior among Belgian adults: a qualitative study.

Background: Nutrition information-seeking behavior is highly prevalent even though it can be challenging to find reliable nutrition information in the current media landscape. Previous quantitative research has identified which population segments use which sources, yet little is known about motivations underpinning nutrition information-seeking behavior. Understanding motivations for seeking nutrition information can increase the efficacy of future nutrition education efforts.

Radiological imaging of the trapeziometacarpal joint: a historical and clinical perspective.

The opposable thumb provides both stability and mobility and is needed to accomplish different prehensile tasks. The trapezium is a complex bone, with a distal articular surface that is convex in the sagittal plane of the thumb and concave in the coronal plane of the thumb. The numerous additional articulations with the carpus and the oblique orientation to the main plane of the hand makes it difficult to evaluate the trapeziometacarpal joint using standard hand or wrist radiographic views.

"Meating halfway": Exploring the attitudes of meat eaters, veg*ns, and occasional meat eaters toward those who eat meat and those who do not eat meat.

Empirical studies have persistently reported negative attitudes of meat eaters toward vegetarians and vegans (veg*ns), but scant attention has been paid to veg*ns' attitudes toward meat eaters. We aimed to investigate the attitudes of meat eaters and veg*ns from both perspectives. In addition, we explored the attitudes of occasional meat eaters.

Around the same table: Uniting stakeholders of food-related communication.

There is an abundance of messages on food and health communicated nowadays by diverse stakeholders, including nutrition and health experts, food industries, celebrity chefs, and food influencers, among others. If each of these stakeholders has different interests and uses other communication strategies, confusion and polarization about food and nutrition is likely to arise. Especially when these messages not only represent facts, but many are emotionally loaded, focusing on "beliefs".

Artificial Intelligence to Address Cyberbullying, Harassment and Abuse: New Directions in the Midst of Complexity.

This brief article serves as an introductory piece for the special issue "The Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to Address Online Bullying and Abuse." It provides an overview of the state of the art with respect to the use of AI in addressing various types of online abuse and cyberbullying; current challenges for the field; and it emphasises the need for greater interdisciplinary collaboration on this topic. The article also summarises key contributions of the articles selected for the special issue.

Minimally Invasive Pronator Quadratus Sparing Approach versus Extended Flexor Carpi Radialis Approach with Pronator Quadratus Repair for Volar Plating in Distal Radial Fractures.

 Several volar plating techniques exist to treat distal radial fractures.  We investigated minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) with pronator quadratus (PQ) sparing versus conventional flexor carpi radialis approach for volar plating with PQ repair after distal radial fractures during the first postoperative year.  Prospective data of two consecutive cohorts were compared: 62 patients in MIPO group with an average age of 61.

Defining trapezial dysplasia - analysis of trapezial inclination in a normal population.

We assess the distribution of trapezial inclination in a young population in order to propose a threshold for trapezial dysplasia. One hundred peritrapezial views were reconstructed from wrist computed tomography scan datasets to measure trapezial inclination. Seventy peritrapezial views were constructed from 10 datasets to assess the influence of radiograph rotation.

Socioeconomic and Environmental Factors Associated With Increased Alcohol Purchase and Consumption in 38 Countries During the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Aims: To explore changes in alcohol purchase and consumption during the first few months of the Covid-19 pandemic, and assess associations between increased alcohol purchase/use and socioeconomic and environmental factors.

Design: Secondary data from a cross-sectional online survey conducted from 17 April to 25 June 2020.

Setting: Thirty-eight countries from all continents of the world.
