Pediatric spinal instrumentation.

This article reviews the evolution of spinal instrumentation in the pediatric age group, starting with the cervical spine and atlantoaxial area and ending with the lower spine. The congenital and the acquired conditions which require instrumentation are described. The technical details regarding pediatric instrumentation are alluded to, and finally an attempt is made to predict the future of spinal instrumentation in this age group.

Segmental Schwannomatosis of the Lower Extremity - A Case Series.

Segmental schwannomatosis involving a nerve in single limb is uncommon. Schwannomatosis is used to describe a distinct clinicopathological disease of multiple schwannomas without manifestations of neurofibromatosis, and it is termed segmental when a single extremity is involved. Surgery is indicated when there is progressive clinical deterioration or progressive increase in size of the tumors.

A middle-aged recently diagnosed uncontrolled diabetic from Mumbai, India presented with fever and headache for 8 weeks. Two weeks prior to his symptoms, he travelled to Lonavala during the monsoons and gave history of indoor swimming in a chlorinated pool. Investigations showed isolated neurological involvement with multiple brain abscesses.

Diverse alterations associated with resistance to KRAS(G12C) inhibition.

Inactive state-selective KRAS(G12C) inhibitors demonstrate a 30-40% response rate and result in approximately 6-month median progression-free survival in patients with lung cancer. The genetic basis for resistance to these first-in-class mutant GTPase inhibitors remains under investigation. Here we evaluated matched pre-treatment and post-treatment specimens from 43 patients treated with the KRAS(G12C) inhibitor sotorasib.

Microsurgery of Giant Intracranial Aneurysm: A Single Institution Outcome Study.

Background: Giant intracranial aneurysms (GIAs) are treacherous lesions and in spite of the many advances, endovascular therapy (EVT) of GIAs is challenging.

Objective: A retrospective analysis of our results with microsurgery of GIAs is presented to examine the role of microsurgery in the current trend of EVT.

Materials And Methods: Between 1996 and 2019, 134 patients with 147 GIAs had microsurgery by the senior author in a single institute.

 The effectiveness of open carpal tunnel release (OCTR) in treating carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is well known. However, the role of ancillary external neurolysis of the median nerve is not well-documented. The Boston carpal tunnel questionnaire (BCTQ) is a commonly used disease-specific outcome instrument for CTS, which is validated across major languages of the world.

Performance evaluation of low cost microfluidic chips made using a digital craft cutter for point of care applications in nucleic acid tests.

A point of care (POC) diagnostic system development for nucleic acid testing (NAT) for developing countries faces several challenges and barriers among which affordability is a very critical one [1,4]. Hence a study was made to evaluate the effectiveness of microfluidic chips made from a digital craft cutter to be used as a disposable cartridge. Low cost materials like double sided tapes, transparent sheets and connectors were used to realize the microfluidic chip [2].

Quinine, mosquitoes and empire: reassembling malaria in British India, 1890-1910.

The drug quinine figured as an object of enforced consumption in British India between the late 1890s and the 1910s, when the corresponding diagnostic category malaria itself was redefined as a mosquito-borne fever disease. This article details an overlapping milieu in which quinine, mosquitoes and malaria emerged as intrinsic components of shared and symbiotic histories. It combines insights from new imperial histories, constructivism in the histories of medicine and literature about non-humans in science studies to examine the ways in which histories of insects, drugs, disease and empire interacted and shaped one another.
