Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) represent a heavy economic burden on individuals, health services, and society. Low adherence to antihypertensive (AH) agents is acknowledged as a major contributor to the lack of blood pressure control, and may have a significant impact on clinical outcomes and healthcare costs.

Objectives: To evaluate the impact of low adherence to AH agents on cardiovascular outcomes and hospitalization costs.

The values of the second dissociation constant, pK(2) of N-(2-hydroxyethyl) piperazine-N'-2-ethanesulfonic acid (HEPES) have been reported at 12 temperatures over the temperature range 5 to 55 degrees C, including 37 degrees C. This paper reports the results for the pa(H) of eight isotonic saline buffer solutions with an I = 0.16 mol*kg(-1) including compositions: (a) HEPES (0.

The values of the second dissociation constant p and related thermodynamic quantities of [N-(2-acetamido)-2-aminoethanesulfonic acid] (ACES) have already been reported over the temperature range 5 to 55°C including 37°C. This paper reports the pa values of four chloride ion free buffer solutions and eight buffer solutions with = 0.16 mol·kg , matching closely to that of the physiological sample.

Observational studies in the Indian subcontinent have shown that untreated nets may be protective against visceral leishmaniasis (VL). In this study, we evaluated the effect of untreated nets on the blood feeding rates of Phlebotomus argentipes as well as the human blood index (HBI) in VL endemic villages in India and Nepal. The study had a 'before and after intervention' design in 58 households in six clusters.

Background: Iron chelation therapy (CT) improves survival in thalassemia major but its beneficial effects on survival in MDS patients remain uncertain.

Methods: We analyzed, by multivariate analysis, survival and causes of deaths in 97 low or intermediate 1 IPSS patients regularly transfused as outpatients, chelated or not, who were included during a month period and followed for 2.5 years.

Background: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) control in the Indian subcontinent is currently based on case detection and treatment, and on vector control using indoor residual spraying (IRS). The use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LN) has been postulated as an alternative or complement to IRS. Here we tested the impact of comprehensive distribution of LN on the density of Phlebotomus argentipes in VL-endemic villages.

What Is Already Known About This Subject: * Non-adherence is probably an important source of preventable cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. * However, until now there have been very few large effectiveness studies assessing the relationship between adherence levels to antihypertensive medication and major cardiovascular outcomes for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

What This Study Adds: * The study results suggest that there is an association between better adherence to antihypertensive agents and a relative risk reduction of coronary artery disease.

Imatinib has revolutionized the therapy of chronic myeloid leukaemia. However the complete eradication of leukaemic stem cells is still a matter of discussion. Interferon (IFN) has been used in the past with success.

In recent years, a number of events have occurred that highlight the necessity of being prepared for a possible large-scale radiological event. An important question is how well are European Union (EU) Member States prepared to cope with mass radiological casualties. A survey to establish the current status of biological dosimetry across the EU was carried out with the aim of assessing capacity to perform biodosimetric triage of accident victims.

Although imatinib mesylate therapy has dramatically improved the prognosis of patients in the advanced phases of chronic myeloid leukemia, room for improvement remains. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors are undergoing evaluation as second-line therapy for patients with imatinib-resistant disease. Kantarjian et al.

Background: The presence of moderate saphenous vein graft (SVG) lesions is a major predictor of cardiac events late after coronary artery bypass grafting. We determined the effects of sealing moderate nonsignificant SVG lesions with paclitaxel-eluting stents (PES) on the prevention of SVG atherosclerosis progression.

Methods And Results: Patients with at least 1 moderate SVG lesion (30% to 60% diameter stenosis) were randomized either to stenting the moderate SVG lesion with a PES (n=30, PES group) or to medical treatment alone (n=27, medical treatment group).

Background: In recent years, the concept of minimally invasive surgery has invaded the orthopaedic field and literature on the subject is spawning. Mini-incision surgery for total hip arthroplasty has been studied without a clear consensus on the efficacy, safety and advantage of that technique. To our knowledge, the efficacy and safety of mini-incisions in hip fracture surgery has not been studied in a randomised fashion.

This study was conducted to explore the most effective vector control tool among indoor residual spraying (IRS), long lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and ecological vector management (EVM) as a part of the regional visceral leishmaniasis elimination initiative. Alpha-cypermethrin as IRS, PermaNet as LLINs and plastering the inner walls of houses with lime as EVM were the interventions. One baseline and three follow-up entomological surveys were carried out in all arms using CDC miniature light traps (LT) and mouth aspirators.

Background: Antibiotics are widely administered to children with the intention of preventing urinary tract infection, but adequately powered, placebo-controlled trials regarding efficacy are lacking. This study from four Australian centers examined whether low-dose, continuous oral antibiotic therapy prevents urinary tract infection in predisposed children.

Methods: We randomly assigned children under the age of 18 years who had had one or more microbiologically proven urinary tract infections to receive either daily trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole suspension (as 2 mg of trimethoprim plus 10 mg of sulfamethoxazole per kilogram of body weight) or placebo for 12 months.

Following ionising radiation exposure of living cells several mechanisms are activated through gene modulations. The measurement of these modifications can be done with QT-PCR and, since about 10 years, microarray technique. The latter approach has the advantage to allow a global monitoring of the complex cellular responses to radiation-induced stress and has been proposed to be used for dose assessment.

Context: Lithium (Li) is a first-line treatment for bipolar disorder but has a narrow therapeutic index. Treatment of Li toxicity includes supportive measures and hemodialysis in severe cases, but this modality is not always immediately available. Sodium polystyrene sulfonate (SPS, Kayexalate), a cation exchanger, has been promising in animal models and human reports to reduce absorption and enhance elimination of Li.

The optimal value of activated clotting time (ACT) during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with unfractionated heparin remains controversial. No data are available on the relation between the ACT at the end of the procedure (final ACT) and the clinical outcomes after transradial PCI and maximal antiplatelet therapy. By dividing the final ACT values in tertiles, we analyzed the ischemic and bleeding events in 1,234 consecutive patients with acute coronary syndrome recruited in the EArly Discharge after Transradial Stenting of CoronarY Arteries (EASY) trial.

Progesterone secretion by the steroidogenic cells of the corpus luteum (CL) is essential for reproduction. Progesterone synthesis is under the control of LH, but the exact mechanism of this regulation is unknown. It is established that LH stimulates the LH receptor/choriogonadotropin receptor, a G-protein coupled receptor, to increase cAMP and activate cAMP-dependent protein kinase A (PKA).
