Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are an attractive therapeutic target due to their predicted role in both metastasis and chemoresistance. One of the most commonly agreed on markers for ovarian CSCs is the cell surface protein CD133. CD133+ ovarian CSCs have increased tumorigenicity, resistance to chemotherapy, and increased metastasis.

Glioblastoma (GBM) represents the most common and aggressive malignant primary brain tumors in adults. Response to standard treatment is transitory and the survival of clinical trial cohorts are little more than 14 months. GBM are characterized by excessive proliferation, invasiveness, and radio-/chemoresistance features; which are strongly upregulated by transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β).

Pancoast-Tobias syndrome characterizes the signs and symptoms of a superior pulmonary sulcus tumor, and includes arm and shoulder pain, atrophy of intrinsic hand muscles, and ipsilateral Horner syndrome. The rarity and overall poor prognosis of patients with superior pulmonary sulcus tumors associated with Pancoast-Tobias syndrome has led to few reports detailing pain management strategies with adjunctive therapies, such as continuous infusions of ketamine and lidocaine, chemotherapy, radiation, and multimodal oral medication regimens. This case highlights the diagnosis and treatment of pain in a patient with Pancoast-Tobias syndrome.

Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO) catalyzes the reaction between gaseous carbon dioxide (CO ) and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate. Although it is one of the most studied enzymes, the assembly mechanisms of the large hexadecameric RuBisCO is still emerging. In bacteria and in the C4 plant Zea mays, a protein with distant homology to pterin-4α-carbinolamine dehydratase (PCD) has recently been shown to be involved in RuBisCO assembly.

Purpose Of Review: To describe the current understanding of the role of three-phase bone scintigraphy (TPBS) in the diagnosis and management of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), discuss its advantages and limitations, and present three examples of TPBS patterns typically seen in CRPS patients.

Recent Findings: CRPS is a debilitating disorder frequently presenting with pain to ordinarily non-painful stimuli, redness, swelling, following fractures, stroke, myocardial infarction, surgery, or even minor trauma, and its diagnosis, based on clinical criteria and supportive imaging findings, is difficult. Of the available adjunctive diagnostic imaging modalities, radionuclide bone scintigraphy using a TPBS protocol is the most sensitive and specific for detecting abnormalities commonly seen with this condition-classically, increased periarticular uptake on delayed phase of TPBS, with variable increased uptake on perfusion phases, depending on chronicity.

Purpose: The fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) technique, which easily detects reciprocal translocations, is currently used to estimate doses in retrospective biological dosimetry, after suspected accidental overexposure to ionizing radiation (IR). This study of 42 cases aimed to verify the appropriateness of this assay for radiation dose reconstruction, compared to the dicentric assay, and to evaluate other limitations.

Material And Methods: We labeled chromosomes 2, 4, and 12 by 3-color FISH painting to detect translocations on lymphocytes of patients with suspected past IR overexposure.

Photoprotective nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) of absorbed solar energy is vital for survival of photosynthetic organisms, and NPQ modifications significantly improve plant productivity. However, the exact NPQ quenching mechanism is obscured by discrepancies between reported mechanisms, involving xanthophyll-chlorophyll (Xan-Chl) and Chl-Chl interactions. We present evidence of an experimental artifact that may explain the discrepancies: strong laser pulses lead to the formation of a novel electronic species in the major plant light-harvesting complex (LHCII).

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the long-term outcomes of 62 patients with myeloproliferative neoplasm-associated myelofibrosis treated with pegylated interferon-α2a, highlighting improvements in survival rates and mutational patterns.
  • The median follow-up was 58 months, and nearly half of the patients were alive at the time of analysis, with those receiving pegylated interferon showing better survival compared to historical cohorts.
  • Next-generation sequencing revealed that many patients had non-driver mutations, with the presence of additional mutations linked to poorer survival, reinforcing the potential benefits of pegylated interferon in this patient population.

Background: Electrical stimulation of the greater occipital nerves is performed to treat pain secondary to chronic daily headaches and occipital neuralgia. The use of fluoroscopy alone to guide the surgical placement of electrodes near the greater occipital nerves disregards the impact of tissue planes on lead stability and stimulation efficacy.

Objective: We hypothesized that occipital neurostimulator (ONS) leads placed with ultrasonography combined with fluoroscopy would demonstrate increased survival rates and times when compared to ONS leads placed with fluoroscopy alone.

Branched covering spaces are a mathematical concept which originates from complex analysis and topology and has applications in tensor field topology and geometry remeshing. Given a manifold surface and an -way rotational symmetry field, a branched covering space is a manifold surface that has an -to-1 map to the original surface except at the ramification points, which correspond to the singularities in the rotational symmetry field. Understanding the notion and mathematical properties of branched covering spaces is important to researchers in tensor field visualization and geometry processing, and their application areas.

In the first step of the photosynthetic process, light is absorbed by the pigments associated with the antenna proteins, known as light-harvesting complexes (Lhcs), which in vivo are functionally organized as hetero-oligomers. The architecture of the pigments, chlorophylls, and carotenoids bound to each LHC is responsible for the efficient excitation energy transfer resulting in photochemistry. So far, the only LHC studied in depth was LHCII, the most abundant membrane protein of plants, while less information was available for the other antennae.
