The aim of this study was to investigate the reliability of a protocol designed to simulate endurance performance in events of long duration (approximately 5 h) where endogenous carbohydrate stores are low. Independent of the distance, dehydration and carbohydrate (CHO) depletion are the most likely causes of fatigue in triathlon, whereas gastrointestinal (GI) problems, hyperthermia and hyponatraemia are potentially health threatening, especially in longer events.
