Background: Postoperative acute kidney injury is associated with an increase in hospital length of stay and mortality. Intraoperative hemodynamics and fluid management may contribute to acute kidney injury. The aim of this study is to evaluate the association between intraoperative duration of hypotension with adverse events after laparoscopic liver resection.

The IMbrave150 trial established atezolizumab with bevacizumab (A+B) as standard care for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), recommending an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) within 6 months of treatment initiation to prevent bleeding from esophagogastric varices. The necessity of mandatory EGD for all patients remains unclear. We retrospectively analyzed 112 HCC patients treated with A+B at five Canadian cancer centers from 1 July 2020 to 31 August 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • Living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) significantly improves survival rates for liver disease patients and decreases wait times for transplants.
  • A study of 7,257 LDLT recipients showed a median overall survival of 17 years, with various factors influencing mortality rates identified over time.
  • The findings suggest that LDLT is a safe and effective procedure, and survival rates have improved even as patient risk factors have increased, indicating room for further advancements in the field.

Objective: Assess the impact of having a living donor on waitlist outcomes and overall survival through an intention-to-treat analysis.

Background: Living-donor liver transplantation (LDLT) offers an alternative to deceased donation in the face of organ shortage. An as-treated analysis revealed that undergoing LDLT, compared to staying on the waiting list, is associated with improved survival, even at Model for End-stage Liver Disease-sodium (MELD-Na) score of 11.

Background And Aims: Despite the substantial impact of environmental factors, individuals with a family history of liver cancer have an increased risk for HCC. However, genetic factors have not been studied systematically by genome-wide approaches in large numbers of individuals from European descent populations (EDP).

Approach And Results: We conducted a 2-stage genome-wide association study (GWAS) on HCC not affected by HBV infections.

Background: The prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is influenced by both tumor and patient specific factors. Current therapies of advanced HCC target angiogenesis and immune evasion, however there are no clinically useful biomarkers to guide clinicians.

Methods: Our aim in this retrospective cohort study was to validate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) prognostic of outcome in advanced HCC from the literature, and to analyze exploratory SNPs chosen from evaluation of the HCC tumor immune microenvironment.

Background: The global benchmark cut-offs were set for laparoscopic liver resection procedures: left lateral sectionectomy, left hepatectomy, and right hepatectomy. We aimed to compare the performance of our North American center with the established global benchmarks.

Methods: This is a single-center study of adults who underwent laparoscopic liver resection between 2010 to 2022 at the Toronto General Hospital.

Background: Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a molecularly heterogenous disease that is often fatal. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) can provide additional knowledge of mutational spectra compared with panel sequencing. We describe the molecular landscape of CCA using whole-genome sequencing and compare the mutational landscape between short-term and long-term survivors.

Polymorphisms in the promoter of the BRM gene, a critical subunit of the chromatin remodeling SWI/SNF complex, have previously been implicated in risk and prognosis in Caucasian-predominant lung, head and neck, esophageal, and pancreatic cancers, and in hepatocellular cancers in Asians. We investigated the role of these polymorphisms in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk and prognosis. HCC cases were recruited in a comprehensive cancer center while the matched controls were recruited from family practice units from the same catchment area.

Hyponatremia may be a risk factor for fracture. To determine the relationship between hyponatremia and fracture we conducted cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses using data from the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) study. The MrOS study enrolled 5122 community dwelling men aged ≥65 years from six centers across the United States.

Background: Organic nitrates uncouple bone turnover, improve bone mineral density, and improve trabecular and cortical components of bone. These changes in turnover, strength and geometry may translate into an important reduction in fractures. However, before proceeding with a large fracture trial, there is a need to identify the nitrate formulation that has both the greatest efficacy (with regards to bone turnover markers) and gives the fewest headaches.

Objectives: Atherosclerosis is a multifactorial disease and, thus, its clinical manifestations are likely to present gender-specific differences with respect to their development, course, symptom complexes and prognosis. The present study aimed to examine sex differences in peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and its clinical correlates.

Methods: PAD severity, quality of life (assessed by ST-22), cardiovascular risk factors, inflammatory profile and comorbidity were assessed in 163 men and 68 women who were consecutively diagnosed with PAD at three Italian University vascular centres.

In patients with intermittent claudication, treadmill exercise may cause acute deterioration of endothelial function and increase in plasma concentrations of adhesion molecules. The authors evaluated the efficacy of intravenously administered propionylcarnitine (PLC)in preventing these phenomena. Thirty-six claudicants with postexercise decrease in brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD)were randomized to either placebo or PLC (600 mg as a single bolus followed by 1 mg/kg/min for 60 minutes).

Objective: We undertook this study to evaluate in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) the relationship of endothelial dysfunction, which is directly related to progression and clinical complications of atherosclerosis, with variables including classic risk factors, inflammation, severity of peripheral circulatory impairment, and atherosclerotic burden.

Methods: This cross-sectional study included outpatients seen in an academic angiologic unit. Eighty-eight consecutive patients with PAD (ankle/brachial index [ABI] < 0.
