Background: This pilot project implemented admission screening for Candida auris (C. auris) using real-time polymerase chain reaction (rt-PCR) in select high-risk units within health care facilities in New York City.

Methods: An admission screening encounter consisted of collecting 2 swabs, to be tested by rt-PCR, and a data collection form for individuals admitted to ventilator units at 2 nursing homes (NHA and NHB), and the ventilator/pulmonary unit, intensive care unit, and cardiac care unit at a hospital (Hospital C) located in New York City from November 2017 to November 2019.

Recently emerged SARS-CoV-2 variants have greater potential than earlier variants to cause vaccine breakthrough infections. During emergence of the Delta and Omicron variants, a matched case-control analysis used a viral genomic sequence dataset linked with demographic and vaccination information from New York, USA, to examine associations between virus lineage and patient vaccination status, patient age, vaccine type, and time since vaccination. Case-patients were persons infected with the emerging virus lineage, and controls were persons infected with any other virus lineage.

We report a rare complication involving a healthy 45-year-old male patient who underwent an emergency laparoscopic appendicectomy for acute perforated gangrenous appendicitis. The patient was catheterised pre- procedure and the ports were inserted under vision. Upon completion of the procedure, a 15 Fr Robinson drain was left in the pelvis and was fed through the suprapubic port hole.

Irreversible pancreatic β-cell damage may be a result of chronic exposure to supraphysiological glucose or lipid concentrations or chronic exposure to therapeutic anti-diabetic drugs. The β-cells are able to respond to blood glucose in a narrow concentration range and release insulin in response, following activation of metabolic pathways such as glycolysis and the TCA cycle. The β-cell cannot protect itself from glucose toxicity by blocking glucose uptake, but indeed relies on alternative metabolic protection mechanisms to avoid dysfunction and death.

Background: A multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is associated with coronavirus disease 2019. The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) established active, statewide surveillance to describe hospitalized patients with the syndrome.

Methods: Hospitals in New York State reported cases of Kawasaki's disease, toxic shock syndrome, myocarditis, and potential MIS-C in hospitalized patients younger than 21 years of age and sent medical records to the NYSDOH.

Background: The 13-valent pneumococcal vaccine (PCV13) was introduced for US children in 2010 and for immunocompromised adults ≥19 years old in series with the 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) in 2012. A two-step, hybrid procedure to calibrate the remote microphones is presented. The calibration obtained in this manner can be directly applied to the measured pressure spectrum without resorting to any modeling or assumptions about the shape of the calibration curve. To demonstrate an application of the methodology, measurements of wall pressure fluctuations underneath a zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer were made.

In type 2 diabetes, prolonged dysregulation of signalling and β-cell metabolic control leads to β-cell dysfunction, and is increasingly associated with abnormal metabolic states which disrupt normal cellular physiology. Utilization of appropriate β-cell models enables a systematic approach to understand the impact of perturbations to the biological system. The BRIN-BD11 β-cell line is a useful, pre-clinical cell model for β-cell dysfunction associated with type 2 diabetes, among other metabolic disorders.

The incretin hormone Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) is best known for its "incretin effect" in restoring glucose homeostasis in diabetics, however, it is now apparent that it has a broader range of physiological effects in the body. Both and studies have demonstrated that GLP-1 mimetics alleviate endoplasmic reticulum stress, regulate autophagy, promote metabolic reprogramming, stimulate anti-inflammatory signaling, alter gene expression, and influence neuroprotective pathways. A substantial body of evidence has accumulated with respect to how GLP-1 and its analogs act to restore and maintain normal cellular functions.

Pharmacological long lasting Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogues, such as Exendin-4, have become widely used diabetes therapies. Chronic GLP-1R stimulation has been linked to β-cell protection and these pro-survival actions of GLP-1 are dependent on the activation of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) leading to accumulation of Hypoxia inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α). Recent studies from our lab indicate that prolonged GLP-1R stimulation promotes metabolic reprograming of β-cells towards a highly glycolytic phenotype and activation of the mTOR/HIF-1α pathway was required for this action.

The sequencing of exons 2-7 of a likely new HLA-C*05 allele identified the second example of HLA-C*05:142, in a male UK European, within a few months of the first example being found in Germany. C*05:142 differs from C*05:01:01:01 by a single base (395G>C) in exon 3 resulting in an amino acid substitution of R108P. Comprehensive serological HLA-Cw5 typing, using 19 antisera, indicated that C*05:142 encodes a "normal" Cw5 specificity.
