SCOUT® radar reflectors for impalpable lesion localisation in the breast and axilla: our experience in the first 500 patients.

Aim: This study aimed to detail our experience of using SCOUT® radar reflector for lesion localisation in the breast and axilla.

Materials And Methods: This is a prospective cohort study describing our clinical experience with the first 500 patients who received SCOUT® to localise lesions in the breast and axilla (from 23 July 2020 to 4 April 2022). Study measures include patient demographics, lesion location, diagnostic pathways (screening or symptomatic), imaging, and surgical and pathology outcomes.

Accidental tracheostomy decannulation: Risk factors and complications in pediatric patients using the NSQIP-P database.

Background: Accidental tracheostomy decannulation (ATD) is a life-threatening event in pediatric patients. The factors associated with ATD in children are largely unknown. Utilizing the National Surgical Quality Improvement Pediatric (NSQIP-P) dataset, we sought to identify the incidence of ATD and associated factors.

Development of a horizontal transmission model to assess the effects of exposure to pathogenic E. cecorum during the hatching phase in broiler chickens.

Due to the emergence of virulent Enterococcus cecorum (EC) in young broiler chicken flocks, the transmissibility of EC during late embryogenesis needs to be defined. The purpose of the present study was to develop a horizontal transmission model to simulate exposure to virulent EC during the hatching phase. In Exp 1, EC5, EC7, or EC11B (∼10 CFU/embryo) was administered to a subset of the embryos, deemed seeders, by in ovo injection into the amniotic cavity at day 19 of embryogenesis.

The epidemiological benefit of pyrethroid-pyrrole insecticide treated nets against malaria: an individual-based malaria transmission dynamics modelling study.

Background: Insecticide treated nets (ITNs) are the most important malaria prevention tool in Africa but the rise of pyrethroid resistance in mosquitoes is likely impeding control. WHO has recommended a novel pyrethroid-pyrrole ITN following evidence of epidemiological benefit in two cluster-randomised, controlled trials (CRTs). It remains unclear how effective more costly pyrethroid-pyrrole ITNs are compared with other tools, or whether they should be deployed when budgets are limited.

Prognostic Communication, Symptom Burden, Psychological Distress, and Quality of Life Among Patients With Decompensated Cirrhosis.

Background & Aims: Timely prognostic communication is a critical component of care for patients with decompensated cirrhosis (DC). However, few studies have examined the association of prognostic communication with symptoms, mood, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in this population.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study of 218 outpatients with DC, we assessed their self-reported health status (terminally ill vs not terminally ill), their prognostic communication with their hepatologists (Prognosis and Treatment Preferences Questionnaire), symptom burden (Revised Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale), psychological distress (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), and HRQOL (Short-Form Liver Disease Quality of Life scale).

Postoperative management of pediatric patients undergoing single-stage laryngotracheal reconstruction in the United States: A survey of ASPO members.

Introduction: The postoperative management of single-stage laryngotracheal reconstruction (ssLTR) plays a significant role in the surgery's outcomes. The relatively prolonged period in which the child remains intubated and sedated to allow graft healing may be complicated by pulmonary sequelae, airway obstruction, withdrawal symptoms, and eventually failed extubation. This study aims to assess post-ssLTR practices among pediatric otolaryngologists.

Psychological Distress Is Prevalent and Interdependent Among Patients With Decompensated Cirrhosis and Their Caregivers.

Introduction: Little is known about the interdependence of psychological distress among patients with decompensated cirrhosis and their caregivers.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we examined the interdependence of psychological distress (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) among 127 patient-caregiver dyads using Actor-Partner Interdependence Modeling.

Results: Among dyads, 26% had both partners reporting clinically significant anxiety and 18% reporting clinically significant depression.

National school food standards in England: a cross-sectional study to explore compliance in secondary schools and impact on pupil nutritional intake.

Background: Many countries have introduced school food standards to improve the dietary intakes of school-aged children. England has school food standards (SFS) legislation in place but little is known about how well secondary schools comply with this. We aimed to assess compliance with the SFS legislation in English secondary schools and explore the impact of the SFS on pupils' nutritional intake.

Awake Supraglottic Airway Placement in Pediatric Patients for Airway Obstruction or Difficult Intubation: Insights From an International Airway Registry (PeDI).

Background: Small case series have described awake supraglottic airway placement in infants with significant airway obstruction and difficult intubations. We conducted this study to determine outcomes when supraglottic airways were placed in awake children enrolled in the international Pediatric Difficult Intubation Registry including success of ventilation, success of tracheal intubation, and complications.

Methods: We reviewed the Pediatric Difficult Intubation Registry to identify all cases of awake supraglottic airway placement before planned tracheal intubation from August 2012 to September 2023 with subsequent review of details of awake supraglottic airway placement in the medical record.

Bio-efficacy of field aged novel class of long-lasting insecticidal nets, against pyrethroid-resistant malaria vectors in Tanzania: A series of experimental hut trials.

New classes of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs), have been recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to control malaria vectors resistant to pyrethroid insecticides. This study was nested in a large-scale cluster-randomized controlled trial conducted (cRCT) in Tanzania. A series of experimental hut trials (EHTs) aimed to evaluate the bio-efficacy of trial LLINs on mosquito indicators most pertinent to malaria transmission over 3 years of use in the community in order to better understand the outcomes of the cRCT.

1-year health outcomes associated with systemic corticosteroids for COVID-19: a longitudinal cohort study.

Background: In patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) requiring supplemental oxygen, dexamethasone reduces acute severity and improves survival, but longer-term effects are unknown. We hypothesised that systemic corticosteroid administration during acute COVID-19 would be associated with improved health-related quality of life (HRQoL) 1 year after discharge.

Methods: Adults admitted to hospital between February 2020 and March 2021 for COVID-19 and meeting current guideline recommendations for dexamethasone treatment were included using two prospective UK cohort studies (Post-hospitalisation COVID-19 and the International Severe Acute Respiratory and emerging Infection Consortium).

Outcomes of heliox use in children with respiratory compromise: A 10-year single institution experience.

Objective: Heliox, a mixture of helium and oxygen, has been shown to improve laminar airflow and decrease airway resistance in children. This study aims to describe the outcomes of heliox use in children with respiratory compromise and to identify variables associated with a need for airway surgical intervention.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study of patients who received heliox between 2012 and 2022 at a tertiary care children's hospital.

Intra-Target Microdosing (ITM), integral to Phase 0 clinical studies, offers a novel approach in drug development, effectively bridging the gap between preclinical and clinical phases. This methodology is especially relevant in streamlining early drug development stages. Our research utilized a Physiologically Based Pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model and Monte Carlo simulations to examine factors influencing the effectiveness of ITM in achieving target engagement.

Background: The Dual-Active Ingredient long-lasting insecticidal nets (Dual-AI LLIN) have been developed to counteract the reduced efficacy of pyrethroid (PY)-only nets due to widespread pyrethroid insecticide resistance in malaria vector mosquitoes. They constitute half of the nets distributed in sub-Saharan Africa between 2022 and 2024. However, their effectiveness once they develop holes is unclear, particularly in pyrethroid-resistant settings.

Mechanistic modeling of twin screw wet granulation for pharmaceutical formulations: Calibration, sensitivity analysis, and model-driven workflow.

Wet granulation, a particle size enlargement process, can significantly enhance the critical quality attributes of powders and improve the ability to form tablets in pharmaceutical manufacturing. In this study, a mechanistic-based population balance model is applied to twin screw wet granulation. This model incorporated a recently developed breakage kernel specifically designed for twin screw granulation, along with nucleation, layering, and consolidation.
