We investigated semantic cognition in the logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia, including (i) the status of verbal and non-verbal semantic performance; and (ii) whether the semantic deficit reflects impaired semantic control. Our hypothesis that individuals with logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia would exhibit semantic control impairments was motivated by the anatomical overlap between the temporoparietal atrophy typically associated with logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia and lesions associated with post-stroke semantic aphasia and Wernicke's aphasia, which cause heteromodal semantic control impairments. We addressed the presence, type (semantic representation and semantic control; verbal and non-verbal), and progression of semantic deficits in logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia.

Background: With increasing patient care responsibilities, administrative work and education demands, physicians may find it challenging to provide high-quality and engaging clinical education to third-year medical students on clerkships. Fourth-year students in the role of near-peer teachers can help fill this role, but they often also have competing responsibilities.

Approach: A 4-week Internal Medicine Student Chief (Student Chief) elective was created, designed such that fourth-year students would apply for dedicated time to serve as student leaders, coaches and educators for the third-year students on the Internal Medicine clerkship.

Background: There is critical need to strengthen the global nursing and midwifery workforce. This is especially true in Malawi where they are the primary providers of obstetric and neonatal care. In Neno district, Malawi, in 2017, we implemented an intensive training and longitudinal bedside mentorship intervention for nurses and midwives.

The impact of bilateral versus unilateral anterior temporal lobe damage on face recognition, person knowledge and semantic memory.

The functional importance of the anterior temporal lobes (ATLs) has come to prominence in two active, albeit unconnected literatures-(i) face recognition and (ii) semantic memory. To generate a unified account of the ATLs, we tested the predictions from each literature and examined the effects of bilateral versus unilateral ATL damage on face recognition, person knowledge, and semantic memory. Understanding the landscape of these graded individual-/group-level longitudinal variations is critical for precise phenotyping; however, this remains challenging to model. Addressing this challenge, we leverage the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center database to derive a unified geometric framework of graded longitudinal phenotypic variation in Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal lobar degeneration.

Evaluating a clinical mentorship intervention on maternal and neonatal complications in primary health facilities in Blantyre district, Malawi: A longitudinal analysis of the Global Action in Nursing program.

Background: While Malawi has made great strides increasing the number of facility-based births, maternal and neonatal mortality remains high. An intervention started in 2019 provided short-course training followed by year-long longitudinal bedside mentorship for nurse midwives at seven health facilities in Blantyre district. The intervention was initiated following invitation from the district to improve outcomes for patients during childbirth.

To offset grade inflation, many clerkships combine faculty evaluations with objective assessments including the Medical Examiners Subject Examination (NBME-SE) or Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), however, standardized methods are not established. Following a curriculum transition removing faculty clinical evaluations from summative grading, final clerkship designations of fail (F), pass (P), and pass-with-distinction (PD) were determined by combined NBME-SE and OSCE performance, with overall PD for the clerkship requiring meeting this threshold in both. At the time, 90% of students achieved PD on the Internal Medicine (IM) OSCE resulting in overall clerkship grades primarily determined by the NBME-SE.

Background: Lower extremity angiography is one of the most prevalent vascular procedures performed, generally via the contralateral common femoral artery. The use of retrograde pedal artery access to perform angiography has long been reserved as a "bail-out" technique to help cross chronic total occlusions that were not amenable from an antegrade approach. A neuroanatomical and cognitive model of impaired social behaviour in frontotemporal dementia.

Impaired social cognition is a core deficit in frontotemporal dementia (FTD). It is most commonly associated with the behavioural-variant of FTD, with atrophy of the orbitofrontal and ventromedial prefrontal cortex. Social cognitive changes are also common in semantic dementia, with atrophy centred on the anterior temporal lobes.

There is extensive synaptic loss from frontotemporal lobar degeneration, in preclinical models and human in vivo and post mortem studies. Understanding the consequences of synaptic loss for network function is important to support translational models and guide future therapeutic strategies. A prolonged fever in a child can be due to a range of causes including infectious, autoimmune, malignant, or genetic in etiology. In our report, we present the case of a previously healthy three-year-old female diagnosed with macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) due to complications of systemic juvenile arthritis (sJIA). MAS is considered a secondary subtype of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare and life-threatening group of syndromes characterized by overstimulation of the immune system leading to systemic inflammation.

Disrupted Lives: Caregivers' Experiences of In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Survivors' Recovery 5 Years Later.

Background Survivors of in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) experience ongoing physical and cognitive impairments, often requiring support from a caregiver at home afterwards. Caregivers are important in the survivor's recovery, yet there is little research specifically focused on their experiences once the survivor is discharged home. In this study, we highlight how caregivers for veteran IHCA survivors described and experienced their caregiver role, the strategies they used to fulfill their role, and the additional needs they still have years after the IHCA event.
