The mortality rate of ovarian cancer (OC) remains the highest among female gynecological malignancies. Advanced age is the highest risk factor for OC development and progression, yet little is known about the role of the aged tumor microenvironment (TME). We conducted RNA sequencing and lipidomic analysis of young and aged gonadal adipose tissue from rat xenografts before and after OC formation.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to see if treating mild chronic hypertension (CHTN) during pregnancy would lead to fewer unplanned healthcare visits after childbirth.
  • - An analysis of 2,293 pregnant patients showed that overall unplanned healthcare utilization rates were similar between the treatment and control groups, though emergency visits were notably lower in the treated group.
  • - Factors like higher BMI and cesarean deliveries were found to increase the likelihood of needing unplanned postpartum care, even though treating mild CHTN showed some specific benefits.

Article Synopsis
  • Ovarian cancer (OC) remains a significant health challenge, particularly due to high mortality rates among older women, highlighting the overlooked role of the aged tumor microenvironment.
  • The study utilized RNA sequencing and lipidomics on the adipose tissues of young and aged rat models, revealing older rats exhibited notably greater tumor formation rates and volumes, suggesting a more conducive environment for cancer growth.
  • Key findings included distinct differences in gene expression, lipid profiles, and immune cell composition between young and aged models, indicating that age-related changes may enhance OC proliferation and warrant further exploration in treatment approaches.

Objective:  Our objective was to evaluate the quality of obstetrical ultrasound images obtained with coconut oil compared with commercial ultrasound gel and to assess patient acceptability.

Study Design:  This was a randomized two-period crossover study in which 40 pregnant patients had standard biometry images obtained with both coconut oil and commercial ultrasound gel during their growth or anatomy ultrasound. All images were then rated by two blinded maternal-fetal medicine physicians on quality, resolution, and detail using a 0 to 100 scale.

Background: Behavioral, social, and physical characteristics are posited to distinguish the sexes, yet research on transcription-level sexual differences in the brain is limited. Here, we investigated sexually divergent brain transcriptomics in prepubertal cynomolgus macaques, a commonly used surrogate species to humans.

Methods: A transcriptomic profile using RNA sequencing was generated for the temporal lobe, ventral midbrain, and cerebellum of 3 female and 3 male cynomolgus macaques previously treated with an Adeno-associated virus vector mix.

Objective: The objectives of this topical review are to (1) increase understanding of pediatric medical traumatic stress (PMTS) in pediatric urology populations through literature review, (2) identify a theoretical model to guide prevention of PMTS in this population, and (3) provide clinical care recommendations based on the model identified. Authors introduce a new term "uropsychology" to describe psychological practice that specializes in the treatment of urology patients.

Methods: Pediatric uropsychologists from 5 pediatric medical care centers gathered to discuss their experience with treating PMTS in their settings and to review existing literature related to PMTS in pediatric urology, PMTS in other populations, and established models for prevention.

Background: There has been increased use of ultrasound in contemporary medical education. Students tend to report a higher sense of satisfaction when ultrasound is incorporated into medical education, but little is known about whether its use leads to an improvement in medical knowledge acquisition independent of the ultrasound skill. In addition, there is no consensus among obstetrics and gynecology clerkships on the most effective way to incorporate ultrasound into the clerkship curriculum.

Mucopolysaccharidoses type IIIB is a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in the gene that encodes for N-acetyl-alpha-glucosaminidase. This results in the aggregation of heparan sulfate polysaccharides within cell lysosomes that leads to progressive and severe debilitating neurological dysfunction. Current treatment options are expensive, limited, and presently there are no approved cures for mucopolysaccharidoses type IIIB.

Although Hispanic individuals are at an increased risk for various genetic conditions, they have lower uptake of genetic counseling and genetic testing. Virtual appointments have many advantages that may help Spanish-speaking patients access genetic services more readily. Despite these benefits, there are limitations that may make them less attractive options for these individuals.

Purpose Of Review: Although pediatric psychology is heavily involved in many medical divisions, its involvement in a urology division is still relatively new and its role continuously evolving and growing.

Recent Findings: This article reviews the limited research on the use of psychology in a urology division, including psychosocial struggles across urology diagnoses, dysfunctional voiding, and anxiety surrounding medical procedures and surgery. Urinary diagnoses and presenting problems seen by pediatric psychologists and medical providers at an urban children's hospital are also included.

Background: Fetal growth restriction can result from a variety of maternal, fetal, and placental conditions. Umbilical artery Doppler assesses the impedance to blood flow along the fetal component of the placental unit. An abnormal umbilical artery waveform reflects the presence of placental insufficiency and can help differentiate a growth-restricted fetus from the constitutionally small, thus guiding further management.

Peripartum depression is a common complication of pregnancy with the potential for dangerous consequences to maternal and infant health if left untreated. The disorder was previously classified as a global public health issue due to the high prevalence of the disorder and the mismatch between available treatment options and successful completion of those options. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic increased the incidence of mental health disorders globally, with an even greater effect on peripartum mothers.

Article Synopsis
  • Mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIB (MPS IIIB) is a genetic disorder that affects lysosomes due to mutations in the NAGLU gene, leading to harmful accumulation of heparan sulfate and progressive brain damage.
  • Traditional treatment methods face challenges because they struggle to cross the blood-brain barrier, but the AAV8 viral vector shows better results than other variants in delivering therapy to the brain.
  • In a mouse study, two injection methods of a modified AAV8 vector significantly improved enzyme levels, reduced harmful substance accumulation, and positively impacted lifespan and hearing, indicating potential for effective treatment of MPS IIIB.

Background: Persistent pulmonary hypertension (PH) causes significant mortality and morbidity in infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). Since pulmonary vascular abnormalities in CDH develop early during foetal development, we hypothesized that prenatal maternal administration of treprostinil, through its anti-remodelling effect, would improve the PH-phenotype in the nitrofen rat model of CDH.

Methods: In a dose-finding study in normal, healthy pregnant rats, we demonstrated target-range foetal plasma treprostinil concentrations without signs of toxicity.

QTc prolongation (≥ 460 ms), according to Bazett formula (QTcB), has been identified to be increased in Williams syndrome (WS) and suggested as a potential cause of increased risk of sudden cardiac death. The Bazett formula tends to overestimate QTc in higher heart rates. We performed a retrospective chart review of WS patients with ≥ 1 electrocardiogram (EKG) with sinus rhythm, no evidence of bundle branch blocks, and measurable intervals.

Anthropologists have used Michel Foucault's thesis on biopolitics to critique modern institutions. Yet while useful, biopolitics is often misapplied. The arrests, killings of unarmed Blacks by police, COVID-19 racial health inequities, and the January 6 white nationalist act of sedition made visible fault lines between a biopolitical system set up to care for whites and a necropolitical system that treats Black bodies as expendable.
