Introduction: Type I Basilar invagination is associated with the assimilation of the anterior arch of the atlas. Observation suggests that the assimilation of the atlas does not allow the development of the normal space between the skull and C1 and displaces the high cervical spine towards the neural structures, posteriorly positioned. Purpose: The objective of this work is to evaluate craniospinal alignment in patients with type I Basilar invagination and AOA in comparison with normal subjects (Type I).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAge-related differences in cortical microstructure are used to understand the neuronal mechanisms that underlie human brain ageing. The cerebral vasculature contributes to cortical ageing, but its precise interaction with cortical microstructure is poorly understood. In a cross-sectional study, we combine venous imaging with vessel distance mapping to investigate the interaction between venous distances and age-related differences in the microstructural architecture of the primary somatosensory cortex, the primary motor cortex and additional areas in the frontal cortex as non-sensorimotor control regions.

Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is a frequent neurosurgical disease which mainly affects elderly patients. Tranexamic acid (TXA) has been hypothesized as an oral agent to avoid CSDH progression and/or recurrence. We performed an evaluation to determine whether the postoperative use of TXA reduces recurrence rate.

Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) is a postprocessing method that also enables MBs identification and furthermore allows to differentiate them from calcifications.
Aims: We explored the implications of using QSM at submillimeter resolution for MBs detection in CSVD.

Background: Resection of infiltrative neuroepithelial primary brain tumors, such as low-grade gliomas (LGGs) remains a neurosurgical challenge. Usual lack of clinical deficit despite LGGs growing in eloquent brain areas may be explained by reshaping and reorganization of functional networks. The development of modern diagnostic imaging techniques could disclose better understanding of the rearrangement of the brain cortex; however, mechanisms underlying such compensation and how it occurs in the motor cortex remain unclear.

This fungal infection might be misdiagnosed as other infection diseases, such as tuberculosis; granulomatous diseases, like sarcoidosis; and even neoplastic diseases. Some previous reports described cases of cryptococcomas resembling brain tumors.

Background: There is evidence that Chiari malformation (CM) and basilar invagination (BI) are largely due to disproportion between the content and volume of the posterior fossa. A recent study identified an increased association between brachycephaly and BI. In several types of craniosynostosis, the posterior fossa volume is smaller than normal, and this is more pronounced in coronal synostosis.

'Neurosurgery cocktail' (NC) was developed by a group of young neurosurgeons as a means of sharing didactic materials and clinical experiences via social media. It connects 35.

To investigate a possible role of veins in the development of MBs, we performed an exploratory study, assessing in vivo presence of MBs with a direct connection to a vein.
Methods: 7-Tesla (7T) MRI was conducted and MBs were counted on quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM).
Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a condition characterized by gait disturbance, dementia and/or urinary incontinence and enlarged ventricular system due to disturbance of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This study aims to describe the long-term experience with patients with iNPH submitted to ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) with the programmable valve STRATA® (Medtronic). We prospectively selected a cohort of patients with a diagnosis of iNPH from January 2010 to April 2013 in a Brazilian tertiary hospital.

The effects and complications of stereotactic radiosurgery have not been extensively studied.
Objective: We aimed to reveal the effect of stereotactic radiosurgery on residual and recurrent adenomas.

Objective: To evaluate the survival of patients with brain metastases treated surgically according to the potentially involved factors.
Methods: 71 patients treated surgically were analyzed with the diagnosis of brain metastases during the period from January 2011 to November 2014, totaling 47 months of follow-up. The Kaplan-Meier curve method was used for survival analysis.
Background: This analysis provides an overview of neurosurgery residency programs in Latin America; it evaluates strengths, weaknesses, and limitations within the Latin American Federation for Societies in Neurosurgery countries. Considering the shared cultural background between these neighboring countries and globalization of neurosurgical education, similarities in training characteristics and equal opportunities are expected. However, program differences are inevitable and should be investigated to promote collaboration and homogenization of training.

Background: Spondylotic cervical myelopathy (SCM) is a common cause of spinal-related disability in elderly patients. The assessment of this disability is a challenging task and depends on the subjective evaluation of the investigator. As a widespread-used scale, the modified version of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association score (mJOA) should be translated and culturally adapted in the Brazilian Portuguese language (i.

Methods: From 2004 to 2015 (12 years), a total of 25 small BTAs and two giant BTAs were treated in the Hospital do Servidor Público Estadual de São Paulo.
Holmes' tremor (rubral tremor, cerebellar outflow tremor) is characterized by rest, intention and postural tremor, often localized to one upper extremity, associated with ipsilateral dysmetria and dysdiadochokinesia. We describe a case of successful treatment of Holmes' tremor with unilateral nucleus ventralis intermedius (VIM) thalamotomy. The subject is a 43-year-old woman with unremarkable previous medical history.

In giant and complex cases, treatment may be difficult and dangerous, once some aneurysms have wide neck and anterior cerebral artery (ACA) and middle cerebral artery (MCA) may arise from the aneurysm itself. Clip reconstruction may be difficult in such cases.

A breakthrough analysis of a multidisciplinary group pointed that temozolomide may play a role in MT of LGGs.

Because of specific peculiarities such as different pathophysiology, fragility of the aneurysmal wall, high risk of intraoperative bleeding, and high probability of losing parent vessel patency, their treatment is controversial, and both endovascular and surgical options have been reported.
Methods: From 2006 to 2015 (10 years), 7 aneurysms in 6 patients were treated.
