Serum creatine kinase studies in mandibular pain dysfunction.

A biochemical test for muscle damage (serum creatine kinase estimation) was used to investigate twenty-six normal subjects, nine normal subjects following experimental bruxism and twenty-seven patients suffering from mandibular pain dysfunction. No significant differences in serum creatine kinase levels were detected between any of the groups.

Role of nuclear stars in the light flashes observed on Skylab 4.

The astronauts on Skylab 4 observed bursts of intense visual light-flash activity when their spacecraft passed through the portion of the earth's inner trapped radiation belt known as the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA). Two experimental sessions were carried out on board Skylab 4 under the auspices of Pinsky et al. who compare the flash rates with the measured flux of Z > or = 1 particles that would pass through the astronaut's eyes.

Flash rates as high as 20 per minute have in the past been considered unexpectedly high. When the effect of nuclear interactions in and near the retina is included, the apparent anomaly is removed.

Hypophosphataemia and paraesthesias during parenteral nutrition.

Parenteral nutrition was instituted in a malnourished woman with a low serum phosphorus. In spite of a moderate phosphorus intake, the serum phosphorus descended to very low levels before returning to a normal range. Over a three week period she was troubled by paraesthesias, numbness, and a generalised weakness.

The reproducibility of electromyographic recordings of the masseter muscle in humans.

An investigation was undertaken into the reproducibility of electromyograms of masseter muscles in five human subjects. Under standardized conditions, integrated electromyographic recordings were taken during three sessions on each of 5 days. Analysis of variance showed that at the 0-05 probability level the results were reproducible for each subject not only during the same day but also between days.
