College students' mental models for recognizing anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

Knowledge about eating disorders influences lay people's ability to recognize individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) and refer them to professional treatment. We assessed mental models (stored knowledge) of AN and BN in 106 college students. Results indicated that most students have general, but not specific, information about AN and BN's symptoms, consequences, causes, duration, and cures.

Virus-induced decline in soluble vascular endothelial growth receptor 2 is associated with plasma leakage in dengue hemorrhagic Fever.

Some individuals infected with dengue virus develop dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), a viral hemorrhagic disease characterized by a transient period of localized plasma leakage. To determine the importance of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) in this syndrome, we compared plasma levels of VEGF-A and the soluble forms of its receptors in patients with DHF to patients with dengue fever (DF), a milder form of dengue virus infection without plasma leakage. We observed a rise in the plasma levels of free, but not total VEGF-A in DHF patients at the time of plasma leakage.

Evidence of vascular damage in dengue disease: demonstration of high levels of soluble cell adhesion molecules and circulating endothelial cells.

Clinical evidence suggests that vascular damage plays a key role in the pathophysiology of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). In this study, the authors tested this hypothesis by examining the levels of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule and vascular cell adhesion molecule (sICAM-1 and sVCAM-1), and the presence of circulating endothelial cells (CECs), as evidence of vascular damage, in peripheral blood from DHF patients (n=13). A significant increase in plasma levels of sICAM-1 (n=12) and sVCAM-1 (n=13) was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in DHF patients, compared with healthy individuals.

Specifying the determinants of the initiation and maintenance of behavior change: an examination of self-efficacy, satisfaction, and smoking cessation.

Using data from smokers (N = 591) who enrolled in an 8-week smoking cessation program and were then followed for 15 months, the authors tested the thesis that self-efficacy guides the decision to initiate smoking cessation but that satisfaction with the outcomes afforded by quitting guides the decision to maintain cessation. Measures of self-efficacy and satisfaction assessed at the end of the program, 2 months, and 9 months were used to predict quit status at 2, 9, and 15 months, respectively. At each point, participants were categorized as either initiators or maintainers on the basis of their pattern of cessation behavior.

Immunopathological mechanisms in dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever.

Purpose Of Review: The continued emergence of dengue virus infection and its severe disease manifestation, dengue hemorrhagic fever, is a growing public health problem. The majority of severe infections occur upon secondary encounters with heterologous dengue virus serotypes, suggesting an immune-mediated process.

Recent Findings: Significant findings in the past year include a greater understanding of dengue virus interactions with target cells such as dendritic cells, hepatocytes and endothelial cells.

Cellular immune activation in children with acute dengue virus infections is modulated by apoptosis.

Apoptosis is an important modulator of cellular immune responses during systemic viral infections. Peripheral-blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) apoptosis and plasma soluble levels of CD95, a mediator of apoptosis, were determined in sequential samples from children participating in a prospective study of dengue virus (DV) infections. During the period of defervescence, levels of PBMC apoptosis were higher in children developing dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), the most severe form of illness, than in those with dengue fever (DF) and other, nondengue, febrile illnesses.

Recruitment and selection of couples for intervention research: achieving developmental homogeneity at the cost of demographic diversity.

Demographic and relationship quality data were collected from 704 individuals recruited to participate in a randomized study of relationship enhancing interventions. Recruiting at bridal shows produced partners who were more satisfied, earlier in their relationships, and less likely to be parents, with a marginally higher proportion of Latino couples. Radio and television coverage produced more established couples with higher levels of relationship discord.

A satisfaction enhancement intervention for long-term weight loss.

Objective: To compare the effects of two satisfaction enhancement interventions for weight control on behavioral and weight changes among individuals in a 15-month weight loss program. The primary hypothesis was that long-term weight loss would be improved by an intervention that enhances perceived satisfaction with achieved outcomes.

Creative professional activity: an additional platform for promotion of faculty.

Academic promotion has traditionally been based on research and teaching, but faculty members' contributions to the profession may not be fully captured in those dimensions. Faculty members may influence the practice of medicine and improve the care of patients yet not obtain traditional measures of achievement through publications, grants, or teaching awards. With this problem in mind, at the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine, the promotions committee developed and implemented a promotions criterion called Creative Professional Activity (CPA) to recognize and reward a variety of types of academic endeavors that have a demonstrable impact on medical practice and care.

The impact of self-efficacy on behavior change and weight change among overweight participants in a weight loss trial.

Despite considerable clinical interest, attempts to link perceived self-efficacy with successful weight control have had mixed success. Definitive data on prospective associations between self-efficacy and weight loss are particularly sparse. This study examined relationships between self-efficacy beliefs, weight control behaviors, and weight change among individuals participating in a weight loss trial (N = 349, 87% women).

Cell type-specific mechanisms of interleukin-8 induction by dengue virus and differential response to drug treatment.

In vitro infection with dengue virus induces interleukin (IL)-8 secretion, which increases endothelial cell permeability; this has been proposed as a mechanism for plasma leakage in dengue hemorrhagic fever. We studied the mechanisms of IL-8 induction, using luciferase reporter constructs, and the effect of pharmacological inhibitors of either IL-8 secretion or nuclear factor- kappa B (NF-kappa B) activation on IL-8 induction by dengue 2 virus (DEN2V) infection. IL-8 induction by DEN2V infection was associated with activation of NF- kappa B and activator protein-1 (AP-1) in HEK293A cells but only with activation of AP-1 in HepG2 cells.

A 6-year-old girl with heterotaxy and a functional single ventricle had persistent cyanosis 4 years after a fenestrated Fontan procedure. Cardiac catheterization revealed a large venous fistula from a left-sided hepatic vein to the coronary sinus, resulting in desaturation. The anomalous vein was occluded with an Amplatzer vascular plug.

Dengue virus-reactive CD8+ T cells display quantitative and qualitative differences in their response to variant epitopes of heterologous viral serotypes.

Reactivation of serotype cross-reactive CD8+ memory T lymphocytes is thought to contribute to the immunopathogenesis of dengue disease during secondary infection by a heterologous serotype. Using cytokine flow cytometry, we have defined four novel HLA-A*02-restricted dengue viral epitopes recognized by up to 1.5% of circulating CD8+ T cells in four donors after primary vaccination.

Genetic variations and relationship among dengue virus type 3 strains isolated from patients with mild or severe form of dengue disease in Indonesia and Thailand.

Sequence analysis was conducted on structural and non-structural genes of 7 strains of dengue virus type-3 (DENV-3 virus) isolated in Indonesia and Thailand in the year 1973, 1994, and 1998 from patients with different clinical manifestations. In general, sequence similarity among isolates was greater than 93%, indicating that the mutation rate of DENV-3 circulating in this region was not more than 7% in the last 3 decades and suggesting that sequences that may responsible for viral architectures and/or biological function were strictly conserved. Mutations unique to viral strains associated with specific clinical manifestations were not found.

Selective memory biases in individuals' memory for health-related information and behavior recommendations.

Behavior change is central to both prevention and treatment of many chronic diseases. Frequently, however, individuals do not initiate the behavior change recommendations suggested by health professionals. One explanation for low rates of compliance with such recommendations may be selective memory biases in favor of information supporting the idea that one is healthy.

The effects of outcome expectations and satisfaction on weight loss and maintenance: correlational and experimental analyses--a randomized trial.

This study examines the hypothesis that highly favorable outcome expectations promote weight loss and hinder weight maintenance. To investigate the effects of outcome expectations and satisfaction with treatment outcomes on weight loss, 349 adults were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 weight loss programs that emphasize either (a) an "optimistic" message, focusing exclusively on the positive aspects of weight loss, or (b) a "balanced" message, giving equal time to positive and negative aspects of weight loss. Participants changed their weight loss cognitions in response to the intervention, but there was no significant difference between the intervention treatment groups in short-term or long-term (18-month) weight loss.

Quantum observable homotopy tracking control.

This paper presents a new tracking method where the target observable O(s,T) at the final dynamical time T follows a predefined track P(s) with respect to a homotopy tracking variable s>or=0. The procedure calculates the series of control fields E(s,t) required to accomplish observable homotopy tracking by solving a first-order differential equation in s for the evolution of the control field. Controls produced by this technique render the desired track for all s without encountering field singularities.

Percutaneous fenestration closure with problematic residual native atrial septum.

A variety of techniques have been utilized to close Fontan fenestrations. Among 20 patients who underwent a cardiac catheterization for fenestration closure, 3 patients had residual native atrial septum, forming an additional intermediate chamber on the pulmonary venous side of the fenestration. Three different methods were used to close these fenestrations.

Dengue virus nonstructural protein NS5 induces interleukin-8 transcription and secretion.

Elevated circulating levels of chemokines have been reported in patients with dengue fever and are proposed to contribute to the pathogenesis of dengue disease. To establish in vitro models for chemokine induction by dengue 2 virus (DEN2V), we studied a variety of human cell lines and primary cells. DEN2V infection of HepG2 and primary dendritic cells induced the production of interleukin-8 (IL-8), RANTES, MIP-1alpha, and MIP-1beta, whereas only IL-8 and RANTES were induced following dengue virus infection of HEK293 cells.
