Introduction And Hypothesis: Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) surgery has evolved toward minimally invasive techniques. Laparoscopic sacrohysteropexy (LSHP) is associated with reduced morbidity and lower mesh exposure risks. This study evaluates the long-term outcomes of LSHP using the SERATEX SlimSling mesh for isolated uterine prolapse.

Childhood cognitively stimulating activities have been associated with higher cognitive function in late life. Whether activities in early or late childhood are more salient, and whether activities are associated with specific cognitive domains is unknown. Participants retrospectively reported cognitively stimulating activities at ages 6, 12, and 18 years.

Importance: In pregnancy, the benefits of lithium treatment for relapse prevention in psychiatric conditions must be weighed against potential teratogenic effects. Currently, there is a paucity of information on how and when lithium is used by pregnant women.

Objective: To examine lithium use in the perinatal period.

Objective: To evaluate the rates of adverse perinatal outcomes among women who conceived after fertility treatments with and without diet-controlled GDM.

Methods: In this retrospective population-based cohort study, all pregnancies of non-diabetic and diet-controlled GDM women who conceived after fertility treatments (in-vitro fertilization - IVF and ovulation induction - OI) and delivered between the years 1996-2016 in a tertiary medical center, were included. Pregnancies of women with pre-gestational diabetes mellitus, and those complicated with gestational diabetes mellitus A2, multiple pregnancies, congenital malformations and those lacking prenatal care, were excluded.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the accuracy of measuring fasting plasma glucose (FPG) within 24-48 h postpartum in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) as a predictor for abnormal 6-12-week postpartum oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).

Study Design: A retrospective cohort study (2012-2021) included women with GDM and singleton pregnancies who had FPG levels recorded 24-28 h postpartum and underwent a 6-12-week OGTT. The study compared the predictive accuracy of these FPG readings with the OGTT results.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the risks and outcomes of obstetric anal sphincter injury (OASI) between obese and non-obese women after childbirth.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 349 women, finding that while obese women had higher rates of gestational diabetes, there were no significant differences in newborn weight, delivery methods, or overall adverse outcomes post-delivery.
  • Interestingly, non-obese women showed higher rates of anatomical defects related to OASI, suggesting a need for further investigation into these findings.

Objectives: Career duration is often used as a metric of neurotrauma exposure in studies of elite athletes. However, as a proxy metric, career length may not accurately represent causal factors, and associations with health outcomes may be susceptible to selection effects. To date, relationships between professional American-style football (ASF) career length and postcareer health remain incompletely characterised.

Study Question: What are the roles of maternal preconception diabetes and related periconceptional hyperglycemia on the risk of major congenital malformations (MCMs) in offspring?

Summary Answer: Maternal periconceptional glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels over 5.6% were associated with an increased risk of congenital heart defects (CHD) in the offspring, and maternal preconception diabetes was associated with an increased risk of CHD, including when HbA1c levels were within euglycemic ranges.

What Is Known Already: Maternal preconception diabetes has been linked with MCMs in the offspring.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the training and self-assessed proficiency of surgeons in the surgical management of pelvic organ prolapse (POP). We focused on the factors that influence decision-making, the surgical techniques employed, the training received, and the management of complications.

Design: A cross-sectional survey.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compared maternal and neonatal outcomes in women with polyhydramnios who attempted a trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC) versus those undergoing planned repeat cesarean delivery (PRCD).
  • Out of 358 women, 58.1% chose TOLAC, achieving an 82.2% success rate for vaginal births without severe complications like uterine rupture or ICU admissions in either group.
  • The results suggest that TOLAC is a viable option for women with polyhydramnios, but further research is needed to improve care and outcomes in these cases.

In an epoch where digital innovation is redefining the medical landscape, electronic health records (EHRs) stand out as a pivotal transformative force. Urogynecology, a discipline anchored in intricate patient histories and meticulous follow-ups, is on the brink of profound transformation due to these digital strides. While EHRs have unified patient data, challenges related to data privacy, interoperability, and access persist.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of ChatGPT in providing insights into common urinary incontinence concerns within urogynecology. By analyzing the model's responses against established benchmarks of accuracy, completeness, and safety, the study aimed to quantify its usefulness for informing patients and aiding healthcare providers.

Methods: An expert-driven questionnaire was developed, inviting urogynecologists worldwide to assess ChatGPT's answers to 10 carefully selected questions on urinary incontinence (UI).

Objective: Prior studies examining small samples of symptomatic former professional football players suggest that earlier age of first exposure (AFE) to American football is associated with adverse later life health outcomes. This study examined a larger, more representative sample of former professional American football players to assess associations between AFE before age 12 (AFE < 12) and clinical outcomes compared with those who started at age 12 or older (AFE 12 +).

Methods: Former professional American football players who completed a questionnaire were dichotomized into AFE < 12 and AFE 12 + .

Background: Metformin is the most used oral antidiabetic medication. Despite its established safety profile, it has known antiandrogenic and epigenetic modifying effects. This raised concerns about possible adverse developmental effects caused by genomic alterations related to paternal use of metformin during the spermatogenesis period preceding conception.

Recently, the debate surrounding the use of mesh in urogynecological procedures has intensified, leading to FDA warnings and heightened safety concerns. This clinical opinion emphasizes the vital need to specify mesh types in these procedures, drawing attention to the risk profiles and clinical outcomes associated with various meshes and the procedures that utilize them. A significant issue identified in contemporary literature is the tendency to group diverse mesh types under the same umbrella, disregarding their unique characteristics and applications.

  • * Analyzing data from over 229,000 patients who started statin therapy, researchers found that a 10% increase in adherence to statins correlated with a lower likelihood of dying on very hot days (≥39°C).
  • * Results indicate that this protective effect is more pronounced in men than women, suggesting the potential benefits of statin adherence during heat waves.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is independently associated with hypertension and ischemic stroke. The goal of this study was to determine the interplay between TBI and incident hypertension in the occurrence of post-TBI stroke. This prospective study used a hospital-based registry to identify patients without pre-existing comorbidities.

Background: Awareness of the age-related decline in fertility potential has increased the popularity of planned oocyte cryopreservation (POC). However, data regarding outcomes of POC, including rates of women returning to thaw oocytes, as well as pregnancy and live birth rates, are scarce and based mostly on small case series.

Objective And Rationale: POC was defined as cryopreservation exclusively for prevention of future age-related fertility loss.
