Intraosseous cysts of the carpus are relatively common benign tumors. They are often discovered by chance and can cause wrist pain thereby requiring appropriate management. Unlabelled: The aim of this study was to assess the clinical and radiological results of the Rubis II thumb carpometacarpal joint reverse prosthesis, at a mean follow-up of 10 years. Between 1997 and 2008, 253 prostheses were implanted in 199 patients; 115 were reviewed. The survival after a mean of 10 years was 89%.

The purpose of this study was to assess the inter-observer and intra-observer reproducibility of the interpretation of CT arthrography and plain X-rays for scapholunate advanced collapse (SLAC), scaphoid non-union advanced collapse (SNAC) and scaphoid chondrocalcinosis advanced collapse (SCAC) wrist conditions, as well as the clinical relevance of these imaging modalities. The CT and X-rays images were reviewed twice in a blinded and randomized manner by two experienced orthopedic surgeons specialized in hand surgery, two orthopedic surgery residents and two experienced radiologists specialized in bone and joint imaging. Cohen's kappa and Fleiss' kappa coefficients were used to analyze the reproducibility of interpretation of the radiological examinations.

In the goal to optimize conservative surgical techniques of the trapeziometacarpal joint in cases of moderate osteoarthritis, we have defined the relationships between the ligamentous attachments and the articular surfaces onto the trapezium and the first metacarpal bone on the one hand, and the dorsovolar and the transverse diameters of the articular surfaces on the other hand. Thirty-six trapeziometacarpal joints (from 18 fresh cadavers) were studied. They were separated into two groups depending on the macroscopic assessment of chondral disease.

Background: Nanotechnology-based bioassays that detect the presence and/or absence of a combination of cell markers are increasingly used to identify stem or progenitor cells, assess cell heterogeneity, and evaluate tumor malignancy and/or chemoresistance. Delivery methods that enable nanoparticles to rapidly detect emerging, intracellular markers within cell clusters of biopsies will greatly aid in tumor characterization, analysis of functional state and development of treatment regimens.

Unlabelled: Mechanistic study of biological processes via Quantum Dots (QDs) remain constrained by inefficient QD delivery methods and consequent altered cell function. Here the authors present a rapid method to label activated receptor populations in live cancer cells derived from medulloblastoma and glioma tumors. The authors used QDs to bind the extracellular domain of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGF-R) proteins and then induced receptor activation to facilitate specific detection of intracellular, activated EGF-R subpopulations.

To investigate the mechanism of phytohemagglutinin (PHA) susceptibility or resistance to the action of proteolytic enzymes, its in vitro proteolysis by trypsin was studied. It was found that Ca (2+) gives resistance to the native PHA molecule to trypsin proteolysis. In the absence of Ca (2+) trypsin performs a thorough hydrolysis of PHA.

Programmed cell death (PCD) is a genetically controlled cell death that is regulated during development and activated in response to environmental stresses or pathogen infection. The degree of conservation of PCD across kingdoms and phylum is not yet clear; however, whereas caspases are proteases that act as key components of animal apoptosis, plants have no orthologous caspase sequences in their genomes. The discovery of plant and fungi metacaspases as proteases most closely related to animal caspases led to the hypothesis that metacaspases are the functional homologues of animal caspases in these organisms.

We purified forms of legumain from a plant source (seeds of kidney bean, Phaseolus vulgaris) and a mammal (kidney of pig, Sus scropha) for comparison of their properties. Both forms were found to be stable only under moderately acidic pH conditions, and were maximally active at about pH 6; the plant enzyme was somewhat less stable and had a slightly higher pH optimum. With benzyloxycarbonyl-Xaa-Ala-Asn-aminomethylcoumarylamide substrates, the two forms of legumain showed distinctly different specificities for the P3 residue, the plant legumain preferring amino acids with bulky hydrophobic side chains because of lower Km values.
