Recently, lineage-specific genetic pathways of tumor progression have been suggested in both oligodendrogliomas and astrocytomas. Aberrations consistently reported in gliomas include chromosomes 1, 7, 10, 17 and 19. Identification of specific genetic damage may have important clinical consequences, because oligodendrogliomas, unlike astrocytomas, are responsive to chemotherapy.

Background: Endothelin (ET) is an endothelium-derived multifunctional peptide that produces a potent, long-lasting vasoconstriction. Nitric oxide (NO), besides being the most important endothelium-derived relaxant factor in blood vessels, is supposed to be involved in regulating the interactions among endothelium, adhesive molecules, and leukocytes.

Methods: We investigated the possible occurrence and distribution of ET and constitutive nitric oxide synthase (NOs), the enzyme that generates NO from L-arginine, in bovine lymphatic vessels and primary culture of lymphatic endothelium by using immunocytochemistry.

In most cases head and neck tumors manifest themselves on a local-regional level giving rise to highly mutilating pathologies with psycho-social repercussions. Surgery and radiotherapy are effective treatments for limited neoplasms (stage I-II). On the other hand, after surgery and/or radiotherapy, the treatment of locally advanced tumors (stage III-IV) or local recurrences and/or distant metastases is still problematic.

The creation of a tracheo-esophageal fistula, and subsequent positioning of a voice button, has greatly improved the patients' ability to communicate and is the treatment of choice for many. The literature indicates that the success rate for this technique is in the 56-90% range. The present study presents the preliminary results obtained in a group of 30 laryngectomy patients for whom a Provox or Blom-Singer-Indwelling voice button were inserted at a later date.

Today laryngeal cancer can be cured by means of a variety of treatments (nearly 60% of the patients in an unselected population are still alive after 5 years). Despite the low incidence, this form of cancer can present a significant social problem because the form of treatment can have an impact on the esthetic, functional and emotional aspects affecting the quality of life (QOL). In the present study 690 laryngeal cancer patients treated with 6 different forms of therapy (total laryngectomy, partial laryngectomy, cordectomy, radiotherapy alone, total laryngectomy plus post-operative radiotherapy, partial laryngectomy plus post-operative radiotherapy) were asked to fill out a specific EORTC CORE QOL Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ C-30) as well as a specific head and neck questionnaire.

Our results show that 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) exposure through mother's milk during the period of rapid myelination (from the 15th to the 25th postnatal days) results in a myelin deficit in the pup's brain and demonstrates the vulnerability of the developing central nervous system (CNS) to 2,4-D. After 100 mg/kg 2,4-D administration to dams, brains of male and female rats show a significant diminution of myelin markers such as monohexosylceramide as well as phospholipids and free fatty acids (FFA) and an increase of cholesteryl esters. Histological studies revealed myelin deficit in some brain regions after 2,4-D treatment.

The role of sun exposure in development of basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas among different populations from south Europe was investigated. Between 1989 and 1993 we interviewed incident cases and a random population sample of controls from five centres where a cancer registry was operating, whereas we selected a sample of hospital-based cases and controls from the other three centres. We gathered information on life-long exposure to sunlight during different activities.

A multicenter cross-sectional study of 115 terminal cancer patients in eight home-care units assessed the prognostic value of quality of life scores, as measured by the Therapy Impact Questionnaire (TIQ). The analysis of the questionnaires completed by 100 patients revealed an association between survival and many of the scales: fatigue, gastrointestinal symptoms, global health status, functional impairment, emotional status, and cognitive status. This association was also observed for some specific physical symptoms, such as confusion, weakness, and loss of appetite, and the overall number of symptoms reported by the patient.

Aims And Background: Studies on migrant populations have been of great value in clarifying the role of environmental factors in cancer occurrence. Most of them consider migrants from other countries or continents. Turin, the target territory of this study, was an important area of internal migration initially from the East, and more recently from southern Italy.

The role of the immune system in the pathogenesis and treatment of cancer is currently a popular area of research. An underlying fundamental concept of cancer immunology is the supposition that tumor cells express antigens differently than normal cells, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Understanding tumor-host interactions may suggest opportunities to modify these relationships to obtain antitumor effects.

We conducted a study of general practitioners in Torino, Italy, to determine their patterns of preventive practice. We examined a set of primary and secondary preventive interventions and their determinants. We explored the determinants of primary preventive interventions (antismoking and alcohol abuse counseling, counseling for prevention of accidents at home among the elderly, flu vaccination for the elderly, and counseling on contraceptive use) and cancer early detection techniques (chest x rays and sputum cytology for lung cancer; mammography, physical examination, teaching of breast self-examination, and Papanicolaou [Pap] smear for gynecological cancers).

Health care reforms introduced in Italy in the late 1970s triggered a profound rethinking of the role of general practitioners (GPs) in prevention. We interviewed 209 GPs registered in the Torino area to delineate their beliefs, attitudes, and practice patterns in relation to prevention. We examined an array of primary and secondary preventive interventions, including influenza vaccination of the elderly; counseling activities related to smoking, alcohol consumption, accidents, contraception, safety helmets, and seat belts; and early detection of hypertension and lung, cervical, and breast cancers.

The first part of the validation procedure used for a Therapy Impact Questionnaire (TIQ) on quality-of-life assessment in advanced cancer patients is described. The TIQ is composed of 36 items which assess both disease and therapy impact according to four dimensions that operationally define quality of life: physical symptoms (24 items), functional status (3 items), concomitant emotional and cognitive factors (6 items) and social interaction (2 items). A global judgement expressed as "have you been feeling ill" further completes the TIQ.

The psychometric characteristics of two indexes used to evaluate the subjective morbidity of chemotherapy regimens were analyzed. Both indexes assessed the duration of discomfort as perceived by the patient throughout therapy. The first index asked patients to state the number of days spent with 'discomfort', and the second index asked them which days they would like to eliminate altogether because of the unbearable symptoms experienced on those days.
