Aims: In patients with surgical atrial septal defect (ASD) repair, late atrial flutters (AFLs), including cavotricuspid isthmus (CTI)-dependent and non-CTI-dependent scar-related flutter (AFL), are common. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of these arrhythmias has a high acute success rate. We aimed to characterize the long-term freedom from atrial arrhythmias in this population.

We assessed the clinical characteristics and determinants of the prognosis of patients with left ventricular ballooning syndrome (LVBS) in an European population. A total of 128 patients with LVBS (98% women, age 67 ± 11 years) were prospectively followed up for a median of 13 months. A trigger event was identifiable in 58% of the patients.

Olfactometric approach for the evaluation of citizens' exposure to industrial emissions in the city of Terni, Italy.

Since several years odour nuisance is a serious environmental concern in the city of Terni, whose citizens are repeatedly lamenting the presence of malodours. This paper describes the olfactometric approach adopted for assessing the odour impact on the city of Terni, caused by the co-presence of three important industrial poles: the steel industry pole, the chemical pole and a third industrial pole, comprising different activities for the treatment of wastewaters and solid waste. The combination of analyses by dynamic olfactometry and dispersion modelling allowed the evaluation of the citizens' exposure to the industrial odours, resulting in both the quantification of emissions and the assessment of their impact on the territory.

CHRONIOUS is an highly innovative Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) research Initiative that aspires to implement its vision for ubiquitous health and lifestyle monitoring. The 17 European project partners are strictly working together since February 2008 to realize and open platform to manage and monitor elderly patients with chronic diseases and many difficulties to reach hospital centers for routine controls. The testing activities will be done in Italy and Spain involving COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) patients, these being widespread and highly expensive in terms of social and economic costs.

An intelligent system for classification of patients suffering from chronic diseases.

The CHRONIOUS system addresses a smart wearable platform, based on multi-parametric sensor data processing, for monitoring people suffering from chronic diseases in long-stay setting. Several signals are being recorded through wearable sensors and are stored together with additional information, entered by the patient. An Intelligent System, placed at a Smart Assistant Device, analyzes incoming data and facilitates data mining techniques resulting upon the severity of a health episode.

Italian consensus statement on paediatric HIV infection.

The objective of this document is to identify and reinforce current recommendations concerning the management of HIV infection in infants and children in the context of good resource availability. All recommendations were graded according to the strength and quality of the evidence and were voted on by the 57 participants attending the first Italian Consensus on Paediatric HIV, held in Siracusa in 2008. Paediatricians and HIV/AIDS care specialists were requested to agree on different statements summarizing key issues in the management of paediatric HIV.

Safety and efficacy of pegylated interferon and ribavirin in adolescents with human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis C virus acquired perinatally.

Limited evidence is available currently regarding the efficacy and safety of pegylated interferon (PEG-IFN) and ribavirin in patients co-infected perinatally with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). No information is available on whether or not these patients should be treated earlier for infection with HCV. This report describes four patients with HIV and HCV co-infection acquired perinatally, who were treated with PEG-IFN and ribavirin for chronic viral hepatitis caused by HCV.

It has been previously reported that the substance P and neurokinin-1 (NK-1) receptor antagonists induce cell proliferation and cell inhibition, respectively, in human melanoma cell lines. By use of the Landau-de Gennes phenomenological theory, we study the texture of a nematic liquid crystal confined within a hybrid cell. Precisely, we consider cylindrically symmetric solutions containing topological defects dictated by appropriate boundary conditions. We focus our attention on cells whose dimensions are comparable with the biaxial correlation length xi(b) .

Improvement of olfactometric measurement accuracy and repeatability by optimization of panel selection procedures.

The EN 13725:2003, which standardizes the determination of odour concentration by dynamic olfactometry, fixes the limits for panel selection in terms of individual threshold towards a reference gas (n-butanol in nitrogen) and of standard deviation of the responses. Nonetheless, laboratories have some degrees of freedom in developing their own procedures for panel selection and evaluation. Most Italian olfactometric laboratories use a similar procedure for panel selection, based on the repeated analysis of samples of n-butanol at a concentration of 60 ppm.
