Pulmonary embolism in the post-partum period is a critical condition with significant implications for maternal and infant health. We present a case report illustrating the challenges in the clinical management of a patient with intermediate-high risk pulmonary embolism who developed signs of hemodynamic instability in light of current clinical practice.

Avascular necrosis (AVN) is a prevalent and progressive complication in young patients with sickle cell disease (SCD), but no study evaluated the long-term subjective and objective outcome measures. Oxford hip score (OHS) and Oxford shoulder scores (OSS) are validated joint-specific patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). In this prospective multicentre study, 47 SCD patients with pre-existing diagnosis of AVN occurred at a median age of 35.

Intravenous infusion of sodium-channel blockers (SCB) with either ajmaline, flecainide, procainamide, or pilsicainide to unmask the ECG of Brugada syndrome is the drug challenge most commonly used for diagnostic purposes when investigating cases possibly related to inherited arrhythmia syndromes. For a patient undergoing an SCB challenge, the impact of a positive result goes well beyond its diagnostic implications. It is, therefore, appropriate to question who should undergo a SCB test to diagnose or exclude Brugada syndrome and, perhaps more importantly, who should not.

Article Synopsis
  • Pulsed field ablation (PFA) is a new method for treating atrial fibrillation (AF) that focuses on ablating heart tissue while minimizing harm to nearby structures.
  • In the MANIFEST-17K study, data from 106 centers involved 17,642 patients and showed no serious complications like esophageal damage, with only a 1% major complication rate.
  • The results suggest that PFA has a strong safety profile and may change how AF is treated, compared to traditional thermal ablation methods.

(1) Background: Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) represents a feasible approach in early-stage ovarian cancer, while this question is still unsolved for advanced and recurrent disease. (2) Methods: In this retrospective, multicenter study, we present a series of 21 patients who underwent MIS for primitive or recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) with bulky nodal metastasis and discuss surgical technique and outcomes in relation to the current literature. (3) Results: Complete cytoreduction at primary debulking surgery was obtained in 86% of cases.

QT interval prolongation is common in patients hospitalized with Takotsubo syndrome (TTS), however, only a minority experience ventricular tachyarrhythmias. Our aim was to characterize the electromechanical window (EMW) in patients with TTS and to evaluate its association with ventricular tachyarrhythmias. We preformed aretrospective analysis of 84 patients hospitalized with TTS in the Tel-Aviv Medical Center between 2013 and 2022.

Background: Recent studies suggest that participation in recreational and even competitive sports is generally safe for patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs). However, these studies included only patients with implanted transvenous ICD (TV-ICD). Nowadays, subcutaneous ICD (S-ICD) is a safe and effective alternative and is increasingly implanted in younger ICD candidates.

The Mediterranean Diet (MD) is described in the literature as a beneficial dietary pattern for neurodegenerative diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The objective of this study was to evaluate the dietary habits in people with MS (pwMS) and to test whether adherence to the MD could have an impact on the severity of the disease measured as the MS severity score (MSSS). Adherence to the MD was assessed in 31 PwMS using the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS), the Pyramid-based Mediterranean Diet Score (PyrMDS) index, and the Italian Mediterranean Index (IMI), and their eating habits were recorded in a food diary for a one-year follow-up.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study compared 49 male patients with breast cancer to 680 postmenopausal female patients, revealing that male cancers were typically diagnosed at an older age (mean age 68.6) and presented smaller tumor sizes.
  • * Survival outcomes for male BC and female BC were similar, with comparable 10-year relapse rates; however, males experienced a higher dropout rate (16.3%) from adjuvant endocrine therapy due to side effects compared to females (7.6%).

Unlabelled: Aim To compare the 1-year survival rate of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) following left atrial appendage occluder (LAAO) implantation vs. treatment with novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs).

Methods: We have conducted an indirect, retrospective comparison between LAAO and NOAC registries.

Cancer is a multi-factorial disease, and the etiology of breast cancer (BC) is due to a combination of both genetic and environmental factors. Breast tissue shows a unique microbiota, Proteobacteria and Firmicutes are the most abundant bacteria in breast tissue, and several studies have shown that the microbiota of healthy breast differs from that of BC. Breast microbiota appears to be correlated with different characteristics of the tumor, and prognostic clinicopathologic features.

We assessed the value of pancreatic T2* magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for predicting cardiac events from a large prospective database of transfusion-dependent thalassemia (TDT) patients. We considered 813 TDT patients (36.47 ± 10.

Background: The E-MIOT (Extension-Myocardial Iron Overload in Thalassemia) project is an Italian Network assuring high-quality quantification of tissue iron overload by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We evaluated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on E-MIOT services.

Methods: The activity of the E-MIOT Network MRI centers in the year 2020 was compared with that of 2019.

Background And Objectives: Long lasting immune response to anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in people with Multiple Sclerosis (pwMS) is still largely unexplored. Our study aimed at evaluating the persistence of the elicited amount of neutralizing antibodies (Ab), their activity and T cell response after three doses of anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in pwMS.

Methods: We performed a prospective observational study in pwMS undergoing SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccinations.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a multifactorial neurological disease characterized by chronic inflammation and immune-driven demyelination of the central nervous system (CNS). The rising number of MS cases in the last decade could be partially attributed to environmental changes, among which the alteration of the gut microbiome driven by novel dietary habits is now of particular interest. The intent of this review is to describe how diet can impact the development and course of MS by feeding the gut microbiome.

No-daily hormonal contraception includes short-acting reversible contraceptives (SARC), which contain estrogen and progestin (vaginal ring and transdermal patch), and long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC), which contain only progestin (levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device and etonogestrel subdermal implant). No-daily hormonal contraceptives are reversible, avoid oral daily intake and have high contraceptive efficacy. They offer advantages over the traditional oral route, increasing user compliance, and reducing forgetfulness.

Background: No study has evaluated the effect of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection on the wide spectrum of complications affecting patients with thalassemia.

Objectives: This multicenter study prospectively assessed the relationship of HCV infection with diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular complications in patients with thalassemia major (TM).

Methods: We considered 1057 TM patients (539 females; 29.

Background: In transfusion-dependent thalassemia patients who started regular transfusions in early childhood, we prospectively and longitudinally evaluated the efficacy on pancreatic iron of a combined deferiprone (DFP) + desferrioxamine (DFO) regimen versus either oral iron chelator as monotherapy over a follow-up of 18 months.

Materials And Methods: We selected patients consecutively enrolled in the Extension-Myocardial Iron Overload in Thalassemia network who received a combined regimen of DFO+DFP (No.=28) or DFP (No.
