Growth hormone (GH) secretion by the pituitary is regulated by stimulatory and inhibitory pathways such as growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH) and somatostatin, respectively, being also modulated by different neurotransmitters acting at the hypothalamic/pituitary level. The pineal gland hormone melatonin regulates GH secretion in many mammals, including humans, although its role in modulating GH secretion has been debated. We describe the case of a young woman chronically taking melatonin for sleep disturbances, referring to her general practitioner for flushing that appeared just after starting melatonin intake.

The green alga (formerly ) is a primary source of astaxanthin, a ketocarotenoid with high antioxidant activity and several industrial applications. Here, the highly repetitive genome was reconstructed by exploiting next-generation sequencing integrated with Hi-C scaffolding, obtaining a 151 Mb genome assembly in 32 scaffolds at a near-chromosome level with high continuity. Surprisingly, the distribution of the single-nucleotide-polymorphisms identified demonstrates a diploid configuration for the genome, further validated by Sanger sequencing of heterozygous regions.

The mechanisms by which bariatric/metabolic surgery induces weight loss and the amelioration of obesity-associated complications are far from being fully elucidated. Variations in circulating hormones involved in the regulation of energy balance are usually considered to explain the effects of surgery beyond the restrictive mechanism. Recent studies have shown that gastric bypass modulates the plasma levels of GDF15, a molecule with anorectic action potentially contributing to the body weight reduction observed after surgery.

Introduction: Bulimic episodes experienced by patients with Binge Eating Disorder (BED) might be sustained by an enhanced behavioral propensity to approach food stimuli.

Methods: To test this hypothesis, automatic approach avoidance tendencies toward high-calorie foods (HCF), low-calorie foods (LCF), and neutral objects were assessed in a group of 23 patients with BED, and their performance was compared to the one of 17 patients with obesity without BED and a group of 32 normal weight participants. All participants performed a mobile approach-avoidance task in which they were required to approach and avoid different stimuli by respectively pulling their phone toward themselves or pushing it away.

Background: The application of semi-conductor detectors such as cadmium-zinc-telluride (CZT) in nuclear medicine improves extrinsic energy resolution and count sensitivity due to the direct conversion of gamma photons into electric signals. A 3D-ring pixelated CZT system named StarGuide was recently developed and implemented by GE HealthCare for SPECT acquisition. The system consists of 12 detector columns with seven modules of 16 × 16 CZT pixelated crystals, each with an integrated parallel-hole tungsten collimator.

Article Synopsis
  • Asymmetries in swimming can be caused by inefficient techniques or limb coordination, leading to reduced propulsion and increased drag.
  • The study compared isokinetic peak torque asymmetries in shoulder movements of competitive swimmers at two speeds (60°/s and 180°/s) using an isokinetic dynamometer.
  • Results indicated greater asymmetry in internal rotation and flexion at the slower speed, suggesting that understanding these asymmetries can help create tailored training programs to improve swimming efficiency and coordination.

Purpose: The contribution of endothelial-targeted autoantibodies against the angiotensin II type 1 receptor (anti-AT1R) and the anti-endothelin 1 type A receptor (anti-ETAR1) has been proposed in the development of cardiovascular diseases. However, no data have been reported yet in obesity. In this observational study we evaluated the relationship between anthropometric and metabolic parameters and anti-AT1R and anti-ETAR1 concentrations in a cohort of patients with severe obesity and associated comorbidities undergoing bariatric surgery.

Food security, a critical concern amid global population growth, faces challenges in sustainable agricultural production due to significant yield losses caused by plant diseases, with a multitude of them caused by seedborne plant pathogen. With the expansion of the international seed market with global movement of this propagative plant material, and considering that about 90% of economically important crops grown from seeds, seed pathology emerged as an important discipline. Seed health testing is presently part of quality analysis and carried out by seed enterprises and governmental institutions looking forward to exclude a new pathogen in a country or site.

Sinonasal tumours are heterogeneous malignancies, presenting different histological features and clinical behaviour. Many studies emphasize the role of specific miRNA in the development and progression of cancer, and their expression profiles could be used as prognostic biomarkers to predict the survival. Recently, using the next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based miRNome analysis the miR-34/miR-449 cluster was identified as miRNA superfamily involved in the pathogenesis of sinonasal cancers (SNCs).

Background: The association between obesity and some cardiovascular complications such as heart failure (HF) is well established, and drugs affecting adiposity are supposed to be promising treatments for these conditions. The sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are antidiabetic drugs showing benefits in patients with HF, despite the underlying mechanisms have not been completely understood yet. SGLT2i are supposed to promote systemic effects, such as triglycerides mobilization, through the enhancement of fibroblast growth factor-21 (FGF-21) activity.
