Osteoporosis is characterized by the loss of bone mass, deterioration of the bone microarchitecture, and an increased risk of fractures; these later complications are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The asymptomatic and progressive nature of osteoporosis underscores the importance of identifying this entity in early stages. Despite the various treatments available, the prevention of the disease represents the most important aspect of management.
