Background: Stair climbing tests are pivotal when assessing physical performance in knee osteoarthritis patients, yet the biomechanical strategies that underpin poor stair climbing ability are heterogeneously reported. Single step tasks emulate a step-by-step gait pattern, an approach associated with knee pain when stair climbing. The objective of this study is to analyse the biomechanics and electromyography activity of both the leading and trailing limbs during single Step-up and Down tasks in knee osteoarthritis patients.

Objectives: To promote standardization and feasible measurements of gait speed across the field, we developed a device that used light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology to measure gait speed from a standing-start testing procedure conducted on a 4-m total walkway. We compared this automated (LiDAR-based) standing-start 4-m gait speed test (AS-4MG) with automated and manual (stopwatch-based) dynamic-start 4-m gait speed tests (AD-4MG and MD-4MG, respectively) on between-method agreement, measurement repeatability, and predictive validity with functional outcomes.

Methods: A sample of 48 community-dwelling adults (mean [SD], 69 [9] years) participated in this method comparison study.

Ischemic wounds are frequently encountered in clinical practice and may be related to ischemia secondary to diabetes, peripheral artery disease and other chronic conditions. Angiogenesis is critical to the resolution of ischemia. Hydrogen sulfide (HS) is now recognized as an important factor in this process.

Background: Biomechanics of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) patients have been extensively studied using motion capture systems, but less have explored standing knee joint angles with the walking parameters, particularly in Asians. We aim to determine gait biomechanical differences between healthy and KOA participants in an Asian population using One-dimensional Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM1D) and explore if they are associated with standing joint angles.

Methods: A total of 20 KOA and 24 healthy stood upright and walked 10 m at self-selected speeds.

Background: Chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) represents the most severe form of peripheral artery disease. While previous studies have focused on gender and racial disparities, there is lack of evidence regarding the impact of housing status. The aim of this analysis was to identify disparities in inpatient management and outcomes of CLTI based on housing status.

Background: Delayed stent grafting for blunt thoracic aortic injuries (BTAIs) is current standard of care. However, given the heterogeneity of pseudoaneurysm presentations, it is currently unclear which severe BTAIs require more urgent intervention. We hypothesize that a Traumatic Aortic Disruption Index (TADI) calculation based on sagittal computed tomography angiography imaging measurements would correlate with urgency of stent grafting.

Objectives: The 4-m gait speed (4mGS) and 10-m gait speed (10mGS) tests and the 30-second sit-to-stand (30sSTS) and 5-times sit-to-stand (5xSTS) tests are commonly used and advocated in consensus recommendations. We compared these tests on their predictive and clinical value concerning the risk of prefrailty/frailty and restricted life-space mobility (RLSM).

Design: Cross-sectional study.

Extrinsic venous compression of the pelvic vasculature is associated with deep venous thrombosis of the iliac veins. Inflammatory pseudotumors are a known rare complication of metal-on-metal and metal-on-polyethylene hip resurfacing, We report the case of a 73-year-old woman with such a pseudotumor compressing the left iliac vein with associated deep venous thrombosis extending distally into the lower leg. In this case, we demonstrate safe and effective use of endovascular techniques, including percutaneous mechanical thrombectomy and iliac vein stenting, followed by revision total hip arthroplasty and excision of the pseudotumor.

Blunt abdominal aortic injuries, especially in pediatric patients, represents a rare and critical challenge. We report a unique case of a 10-year-old boy who presented after a high-speed motor vehicle collision resulting in injury to the aortic bifurcation, alongside other intra-abdominal trauma. A novel surgical approach for aortoiliac reconstruction in a contaminated field was used.

Estrogens regulate numerous physiological and pathological processes, including wide-ranging effects in wound healing. The effects of estrogens are mediated through multiple estrogen receptors (ERs), including the classical nuclear ERs (ERα and ER ), that typically regulate gene expression, and the 7-transmembrane G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER), that predominantly mediates rapid "non-genomic" signaling. Estrogen modulates the expression of various genes involved in epidermal function and regeneration, inflammation, matrix production, and protease inhibition, all critical to wound healing.

Intraoperative positioning system (IOPS; Centerline Biomedical, Inc) is a novel technology that allows for real-time intravascular navigation of endovascular devices using an electromagnetic field. In this report, we describe the use of IOPS for effective treatment of bilateral common iliac artery aneurysms with endovascular aortoiliac repair using iliac branch endoprostheses. Our experience suggests that this technology has the potential to reduce radiation and contrast use in endovascular procedures, although its application is currently limited.

Article Synopsis
  • Walking impairment is a common issue following acquired brain injury (ABI), and abnormal arm movements can negatively affect psychological health, making their accurate assessment important for rehabilitation.
  • A new study tested a machine learning model using gait videos to automate the assessment of arm movement abnormalities in people with ABI, comparing its predictions to evaluations by experienced clinicians.
  • Results showed that the machine learning model’s predictions closely matched those of human assessors with no significant differences, demonstrating its potential as a reliable assessment tool for clinical use.

This review focuses on the dual role of platelets in atherosclerosis and thrombosis, exploring their involvement in inflammation, angiogenesis, and plaque formation, as well as their hemostatic and prothrombotic functions. Beyond their thrombotic functions, platelets engage in complex interactions with diverse cell types, influencing disease resolution and progression. The contribution of platelet degranulation helps in the formation of atheromatous plaque, whereas the reciprocal interaction with monocytes adds complexity.

Introduction: Transportation databases have limited data regarding injury severity of pedestrian versus automobile patients. To identify opportunities to reduce injury severity, transportation and trauma databases were integrated to examine the differences in pedestrian injury severity at street crossings that were signalized crossings (SCs) versus nonsignalized crossings (NSCs). It was hypothesized that trauma database integration would enhance safety analysis and pedestrians struck at NSC would have greater injury severity.
