Models are mathematical representations of systems, processes or phenomena. In biomechanics, finite-element modelling (FEM) can be a powerful tool, allowing biologists to test form-function relationships , replacing or extending results of experimentation. Although modelling simplifications and assumptions are necessary, as a minimum modelling requirement the results of the simplified model must reflect the biomechanics of the modelled system.

Methods: We performed face-to-face interviews with families whose children were hospitalized in the PICU. A research team member provided an educational presentation about the planned trial and administered a survey with open- and closed-ended items.

Introduction: Symptoms of atrial fibrillation (AF) can significantly affect functioning in daily life and reduce patients’ quality of life (QoL). The severity and type of AF symptoms affects not only patient’s QoL, but can be a cause of the development of emotional and psychological disorders. In addition, frailty syndrome (FS) plays important role from the point of view of developing disability and dependence on others, as well as reducing QoL.

A major contributor to unpredictable and severe toxicity relates to single nucleotide variation (SNV) in dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (), the rate-limiting fluoropyrimidine metabolizing enzyme. In addition to SNVs, a study of Finnish patients suggested that a exon 4 deletion was observed in their population.

A key point made is that the validity of dissociation as a phenomenon, that is, as reported symptoms, does not depend on theories about the mechanisms of dissociation. There are no proven mechanisms for any mental health symptoms or DSM-5 diagnoses including anxiety, depression, psychosis and substance use disorders.

Blends were prepared by incorporating CNC and MCC at different concentrations, 1%, 3%, 5%, and 10% w/w in CS. The crystallinity index (CrI) of CNC and MCC was determined using X-ray diffraction, and the chemical functionality of CNC, MCC, and CS was studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

Here we report a simple method to experimentally generate three-dimensional layered mesh morphologies through intrinsic molecular confinement self-assembly. We designed triblock bottlebrush polymers with two Janus domains: one perpendicular and one parallel to the polymer backbone.

Method: Using data from a national survey of parent-adolescent dyads (n = 853), we calculated the prevalence of provider-facilitated parent-adolescent health communication about 11 topics as a result of adolescent's last preventive visit.
Introduction: Treatment of prolonged air leak due to secondary spontaneous pneumothorax is challenging. Autologous blood patch pleurodesis (ABPP) is a treatment option. Previous evidence is reliant on single-centre series and underpowered trials and is mostly described in air leaks post cardiothoracic intervention.

Gastric atrophy (GA) and gastric intestinal metaplasia (IM) of the mucosa of the stomach have been found to increase the risk of gastric cancer and are considered precancerous lesions. Therefore, the early detection of GA and IM may have a valuable role in histopathological risk assessment.

This study aims to develop a novel urine test to estimate MPA exposure based using metabolomics.
Methods: Urine samples obtained on the same day of MPA pharmacokinetic testing from two prospective cohorts of pediatric kidney transplant recipients were assayed for 133 unique metabolites by mass spectrometry.
Background: Successful linkage to HIV services and initiation of antiretroviral treatment (ART) for children living with HIV (CLHIV) is critical to improve pediatric ART coverage. We aimed to assess confirmatory testing, linkage, and rapid ART initiation among newly diagnosed CLHIV in Ethiopia from the perspectives of caregivers and healthcare workers (HCWs).
Methods: We conducted standardized surveys with HCWs and caregivers of children 2-14 years who were diagnosed with HIV but not yet on ART who had been identified during a cross-sectional study in Ethiopia from May 2017-March 2018.
Background: Image-guided biopsies in patients with suspected native vertebral osteomyelitis (NVO) are recommended to establish the microbiological diagnosis and guide antibiotic therapy. Despite recent advances, the microbiological yield of this procedure remains between 48% and 52%. A better understanding of factors associated with this low yield may lead to improved microbiological diagnosis.

The corpus luteum is maintained by chorionic gonadotropin (CG). Upon sufficient placental maturation, CG production wanes, the corpus luteum involutes, and control is shifted to the placenta, one consequence of which is a midgestational rise in glucocorticoid production, especially cortisol and cortisone, by both mother and fetus.

At our institution, comprising hospitals across three sites in London, we initially implemented a COVID-19 follow-up pathway that was in line with expert opinion at the time but more intensive than initial clinical guidelines suggested. We retrospectively evaluated the resource requirements for this service, which supported 526 patients from April 2020 to October 2020.

As a result, A and B blocks of di-JBBCPs can microphase-separate perpendicular to the backbone, which is located at the interface between the two blocks. A reparametrized dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) model is used to theoretically investigate the self-assembly of di-JBBCPs and to compare with the experimental results of a range of polystyrene--polydimethylsiloxane di-JBBCPs.

To examine the role of GnRH-II and its receptor in pig reproduction, we produced a unique swine line with ubiquitous knockdown of endogenous GnRHR-II levels (GnRHR-II knockdown [KD]), which is largely the focus of this review. In mature GnRHR-II KD males, circulating testosterone concentrations were 82% lower than littermate control boars, despite similar luteinizing hormone (LH) levels.

However, research exploring the influence on sensory quality of the wine, particularly during storage, is limited. Therefore, the objective of this study was to characterize the sensory profiles of Merlot and Chardonnay wines made with pectinase-producing NSY, with added substrate, that is, pectin.

This is achieved by fabricating turning mirrors on two opposite cores of a multi-core fibre to produce a probe with dimensions limited only be the fibre diameter. Two fabrication processes have been investigated: Focused ion beam milling, which has resulted in a sensor measurement accuracy, sensitivity and range of ±0.

Although most adults are cared for on adult services, pediatric services often admit adults, particularly those with chronic conditions. The objective of this study is to describe IHCA in adults admitted to pediatric services.
