Objective: Visual laser-assisted prostatectomy (VLAP) with a noncontact right-angle delivery system recently has been introduced as a new treatment option for symptomatic outlet obstruction secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia. The right-angle laser technology has numerous potential advantages over traditional transurethral resection of the prostate. These advantages include the feasibility of performing the VLAP procedure under local anesthesia without bleeding.

The emergence of less invasive therapies has demanded the reassessment of surgical procedures for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. This study was designed to evaluate the long term efficacy of transurethral incision of the prostate (TUIP) using objective (urodynamic), and subjective (symptom score and assessment of satisfaction) parameters, and investigate sexual function. Forty one men after TUIP (mean age of 63.

To evaluate the efficacy of intravesical oxybutynin chloride, 42 patients who were incontinent secondary to uninhibited detrusor contractions and had failed oral anticholinergic therapy were begun on intravesical oxybutynin chloride. Indications for intravesical therapy were detrusor hyperreflexia (N = 20), detrusor instability (N = 19), and bowel/bladder overactivity after augmentation cystoplasty (N = 3). A 5-mg tablet dissolved in 30 cc of sterile water was instilled into the bladder two to three times daily via clean self intermittent catheterization.

The efficacy of transurethral incision of the prostate was evaluated prospectively in 26 men with urodynamic evidence of outlet obstruction secondary to small prostate glands (estimated size less than 30 gm). All men completed preoperative and postoperative symptom questionnaires and extensive urodynamic testing with a median postoperative followup of 16.25 months.

We investigated the efficacy of a short course of prednisone therapy in 20 patients with histologic evidence of chronic active hepatitis B. Sixteen of 20 prednisone-treated patients who were initially serum hepatitis B virus DNA-positive had a transient elevation of their serum ALT activity on withdrawal of prednisone. Subsequently, 14 of these 16 patients (87.

We conducted a clinical trial to study the effects of a 10-week course of prednisone therapy and its withdrawal on serum aminotransferase levels and on hepatitis B virus (HBV) markers in patients with hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) positive chronic active hepatitis (CAH-B). Eighteen patients with CAH-B were treated with prednisone, while another 18 patients matched for age, sex, race and sexual preference were followed simultaneously without treatment for the same duration. Nine of 18 prednisone-treated patients became transiently DNA polymerase positive.
